BHX | Birmingham Airport

Birmingham is an important city in Great Britain and one of the biggest and has the 7th largest airport in the country due to its proximity to that big city called "London" which has 4 of them 7 airports. The other 2 being Manchester and Edinburgh in Scotland.
However BHX as we like to call it is undergoing an expansion as we speak with an extension to its main runway which will enable it to fly to the emerging markets of China and India as well as non stop flights to the West coast of the USA. It already flies direct to New York, Toronto, Dubai, Islamabad and Cancun and offers flights to most European centres.
Its current annual passenger numbers is around 9 Million, but airport officials claim it could handle double that overnight if airlines thought outside of the UK government "London centric" mentality and allowed airports such as Birmingham to take some of the capacity that is so overcrowded over London.
Its Runway extension will take the runway to 3000 metres.

Birmingham Airport sees numbers soar
Saturday 7th July 2012, 10:14AM BST.

Record-breaking numbers of passengers have flown from Birmingham Airport as bosses revealed big plans for thousands of jobs and new long haul destinations.

The airport has had its best growth in more than three years as thousands tried to flee the constant downpours and took advantage of a strong pound against the weak euro.

It comes as the airport is working to offer direct flights to Beijing and Shanghai to help West Midland businesses tap into the emerging markets in China as well as providing direct flights to the west coast of America.

Latest figures reveal 912,151 people flew from the airport in June, 5.9 per cent up on the year before.

Airport chief executive Paul Kehoe said the rain had encouraged people to get away. Popular destinations included Paris, which was 25 per cent up on the year before, with Canada up six per cent and destinations in Germany up 26 per cent.

The airport has also seen a 100 per cent rise in the number of people flying to Istanbul in Turkey.

In an exclusive interview, Mr Kehoe said: “Our latest figures are very encouraging. We haven’t seen this sort of growth for three or four years.”

He said the airport’s £65m extension of its runway, due to be complete in 2014, would allow it to offer direct flights as far as Tokyo in Japan, Johannesburg in South Africa and Singapore.

Mr Kehoe has revealed tens of thousands could be employed by the airport by 2040 if it can convince the government that it provides the answer to congestion at London Heathrow, rather than a third

Not sure to be honest but i think the main problem with BHX at the moment having a scheduled A380 service is how narrow the taxiway is at the bottom of the runway, its a bit of a squeeze. However it can be done as shown in this photo when the A380 did make a visit to the airport in 2010.

I thought air France were operating their own A318 aircraft instead of using its subsidies smaller aircraft?

The airport would need to make some modifications before regular A380 ops could commence. Also, I don't think BHX is cat 10 fire covered yet, which prevents the A380 and B747-800 using the airport (the A380 visit had to hire in extra equipment.)

Welcome World_rep, as with most airlines at BHX, aircraft change from time to time and one of todays services to CDG is with the Embraer aircraft. You are correct though when you talk about the Airbus A318 aircraft as this does operate most flights out of BHX to CDG.

Correct BHX is RFF CAT 9 prohibiting A380 and B747-8i operations, also A340-600 cannot be handled at BHX, due to their excessively long wheelbase.
This chart shows which surfaces are certified for A380 ops.
