2012 News - Flights - Monarch flight ZB467 21st September 2012

21 09 2012

Monarch confirms that the flight operating from Nice on ZB467 operated by Aurela Airlines on 21 September 2012, has been involved in an incident upon landing at Birmingham Airport.

It is understood that the flight operating on an Aurela Boeing 737-300 aircraft registration LY-SKA with 135 passengers onboard left the runway whilst taxiing to the terminal, bringing the aircraft to a stop. Passengers have now safely disembarked from the aircraft and have been coached to the terminal where they are being cared for by Monarch Airline staff. At this time we understand that no passengers or crew have sustained any injuries.

Monarch apologises to all passengers on-board and is offering them all possible assistance. Monarch is working with Birmingham Airport to move the aircraft and is fully assisting with the authorities. As a standard precaution emergency services have attended the aircraft.

We have suspended the use of Aurela Airlines.

Good news from our German Friends.

Birmingham Airport 'more attractive to travellers than Heathrow', says Lufthansa

By Jon Griffin Sep 24 2012

BIRMINGHAM Airport is proving more attractive to travellers than Heathrow – according to Lufthansa which is announcing record passenger numbers from the region.

The German airline, the second biggest carrier at the airport, says Birmingham is outperforming all its other UK bases for business growth.

New figures from Lufthansa show a near 17 per cent surge in travellers from Birmingham Airport for the January to August period, with a total of 374,310 passengers.

The substantial increase for 2012 comes hard on the heels of 2011’s own record-breaking figures, up by 19 per cent to a total of 484,503.

Christian Schindler, Lufthansa’s general manager for the UK and Ireland, paid a glowing tribute to Birmingham Airport – and said he expected passenger numbers to rise further.

“Birmingham is a very good market for us. The passenger figures have continued to grow; people see Heathrow and realise it is better to travel from Birmingham if you take the total travel times into account.

“People realise it is the better option – in many ways it is more efficient and more comfortable.

“We have invested a lot in Birmingham – our passenger numbers are growing and the number of flights are growing – and I think the future there will be about growth, and not about competition with Heathrow. The strongest growth we are seeing like for like is definitely Birmingham.”

He praised expansion plans for Birmingham Airport. “The runway extension is a good idea but more important is the whole infrastructure; you have the advantage of having a fully operating train station linked into Birmingham Airport.”

Mr Schindler said a new daily service to Berlin from Birmingham launched in early June was proving particularly popular, along with new flights to Hamburg.

“We built it up from scratch, and it is full every day. Berlin is a great city experience.”

Gudrun Gorner, Lufthansa Corporate communications executive, said: “The new services are strong factors in our double digit growth from Birmingham.”
