This map classifies the counties into 5 categories:
1. center
2. additional area to the center (probably urban area outside the central municipality)
3. narrower defined commuter area (min. 50% are commuting to the center or the additional area)
4. wider defined commuter area (25-50% are commuting to the center or the additional area)
5. counties not part of any of the above.

This seems to come closest to the US CSA.
While looking for a definition for what is included in a CSA, I found this on the website of the US Federal Register:
Quote:
1. Recommendations Concerning Combined Statistical Areas...
...adjacent core based statistical areas (CBSAs) should automatically qualify for combination if they possess an employment interchange measure of 15 or higher...
So, applying US CSA logic, there would be these German "CSA":
1. Bremen-Hamburg-Kiel-Lübeck-Rostock
2. Trier-Saarbrücken
3. Freiburg
4. Erfurt-Jena
5. All the rest, as they are linked like a chain across the whole country

The question is: Does this really make sense?

^Just because those areas are contiguous doesn't mean they have a commuter interchange measure of above 15. The Hamburg and Kiel areas would perhaps form a single CSA (but not Hamburg and Bremen), as would Munich and Augsburg, Rhine-Main and Rhine-Neckar, Rhine-Ruhr and Aachen, etc.

Last week IBGE released the 2012 GDP for Brazilian municipalities. So, Brazilian and American metro areas, starting with the top. I'll add others later:

2012

Country -- GDP 2012 (US$) -- Pop. 2012

USA --- 15.566.077.000.000 --- 313.914.040
Brazil --- 2.253.090.000.000 --- 193.946.886

MAs --------------------- GDP 2012 (US$) -- Pop. 2012

1. New York, NY-NJ-CT-PA -- 1.555.043.000.000 -- 23.174.569

2. Los Angeles, CA -- 918.834.000.000 -- 18.238.998

3. San Francisco, CA -- 606.643.000.000 -- 8.370.967

4. Chicago, IL-IN-WI -- 578.275.000.000 -- 9.746.720

5. Boston, MA-RI-NH-CT -- 470.343.000.000 -- 7.784.283

6. Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV -- 467.682.000.000 -- 6.356.514

11. Atlanta, GA -- 308.278.000.000 -- 5.839.672

15. Minneapolis, MN-WI -- 228.301.000.000 -- 3.508.500

Brazilian ones fell on the ranking as Brazilian GDP, expressed in dollars, peaked in 2011. São Paulo, for instance, peaked at US$ 519 billion, just behind Chicago.

Here's the GDP for Australia's major cities as of 2013-14, but it does not state whether it's in USD or AUD.

Sydney - $353 billion
Melbourne - $277 billion
Brisbane - $147 billion
Perth - $149 billion
Adelaide - $73 billion

Resuming the analysis of the cities in page 1 sorted by size:

1,300,000 - 1,700,000

-------------------- GDP 2011 (US$) -- Pop. 2011

Raleigh ---------------- US$ 98.3 bi ---- 1.7 mi

Nashville -------------- US$ 85.8 bi ---- 1.6 mi

Norfolk ---------------- US$ 80.7 bi ---- 1.7 mi

Okayama --------------- US$ 78.3 bi ---- 1.6 mi

Providence ------------ US$ 68.1 bi ---- 1.6 mi

Adelaide ----------------- US$ 67.3 bi ---- 1.3 mi

Niigata ------------------ US$ 66.9 bi ---- 1.4 mi

Richmond -------------- US$ 66.6 bi ---- 1.3 mi

Louisville -------------- US$ 64.6 bi ---- 1.4 mi

Memphis --------------- US$ 64.3 bi ---- 1.3 mi

Greensboro ------------ US$ 63.2 bi ---- 1.4 mi

Genoa ------------------ US$ 62.0 bi ---- 1.5 mi

Jacksonville ------------ US$ 60.7 bi ---- 1.4 mi

Auckland ---------------- US$ 58.8 bi ---- 1.5 mi

Kumamoto -------------- US$ 58.8 bi ---- 1.5 mi

São José dos Campos -- US$ 30.1 bi ---- 1.5 mi

São Luís ----------------- US$ 13.7 bi ---- 1.5 mi

Natal --------------------- US$ 11.8 bi ---- 1.5 mi

João Pessoa ------------- US$ 10.7 bi ---- 1.3 mi

Maceió ------------------- US$ 10.6 bi ---- 1.4 mi

Raleigh with a very high GDP per capita. Those cities in North Carolina grow crazy;

The gap between Nashville and Memphis is quite big. I wonder what is the impact of FedEx on Memphis GDP;

Adelaide above US$ 50,000, surprinsingly high, way above the dynamic and main city, Auckland;

Genoa, despite all the Rust Belt fame, is above national average;

São José dos Campos (80 km east of São Paulo) is the seat of Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer. Part of São Paulo macrometropolitan area. GDP per capita of US$ 19,500;

São Luís, Natal, João Pessoa and Maceió are all state capitals in Northeast. Public sector gives a big bump in their GDP. In São Luís, the port helps as well.

It's a bit unfortunate that the NUTS boundaries have been so poorly defined so as to have virtually no relationship with the functional city. I guess the most obvious example of this would be London.

Inner London, Outer London and then a strange combination of home counties.

Taking the data and trying to create a definition of London's metro area would include the following;

003.*276,323*Inner London UK*
020.*118,436*Outer London UK*
035.*86,541*Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire UK
039.*78,099*Surrey, East & West Sussex UK
081.*49,423*Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire UK
103.*39,372*Essex UK
104.*38,896*Kent UK

This would give London's metro area a GDP of 687bn EUR in 2011 - I admit this is slightly generous in places.

For anybody interested - I got bored at work and downloaded the same data for 2013 from Eurostat (EURm)

GEO.....GEO(L)/TIME.........................................2013
FR10.....Île de France..........................................631,301

UKH2....Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire...................57,740
UKH3....Essex...................................................44,298
UKI1.....Inner London (NUTS 2010)........................313,900
UKI2.....Outer London (NUTS 2010)........................133,729
UKJ1.....Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire..102,036
UKJ2.....Surrey, East and West Sussex.....................92,435
UKJ4.....Kent.....................................................44,326

............London Metro Total..................................788,464

Again - What's included in London is there to be torn to shreds but one interesting point - From 2011-2013 my London Met grew at 10% compared to 3% for Il de France.

OK firstly I apologize for how messy this data looks - I can't figure out a good way to get it in in table format.

Secondly, I have found a lower level of NUTS geography that allows me to define London a bit more tightly so it becomes more comparable with Il=de-France - I have included the individual components below as well as a total for the whole of the areas which I've called 'Total London Metro Area' (In my own opinion)

GEO GEO(L)/TIME ------------------------Area 2013--Population--2013 GDP 2013
FR1 Île de France---------------------------12,012 --11,952,061--€ 631,301

UKH21 Luton--------------------------------43------206,895---€ 5,958
UKH23 Hertfordshire------------------------1,643---1,134,963-€ 40,225
UKH24 Bedford------------------------------476----160,272---€ 4,728
UKH25 Central Bedfordshire-----------------716-----262,229---€ 6,831
UKH31 SouthendonSea-----------------------68-----175,285---€ 3,800
UKH32 Thurrock------------------------------184-----160,160---€ 3,686
UKI11 Inner London West (NUTS 2010)------112 ----1,104,820-€ 199,300
UKI12 Inner London East (NUTS 2010)-------216-----2,205,600-€ 114,600
UKI21 Outer London East and North East-----444----1,800,530-€ 35,296
UKI22 Outer London South (NUTS 2010)-----355-----1,249,693-€ 29,987
UKI23 Outer London West and North West---467-----2,002,334 -€ 68,447

That's USD PPP (a currency that doesn't exist), and using very obscure definition of metro areas.

Wow, really surprised San Francisco isn't in the top 25. Must be the city itself and not the entire CSA because I believe the san fran CSA is above at least washington.

Oh, and as a homer, go L.A.! World city baby!

I'm with Yuri on this one - these big lists seem to have numbers plucked from the sky. I'd stick to data from official statistics authorities.

And yes it was discussed elsewhere in the thread that SF would be in if you took the whole CSA.

Ah, ok I see, makes sense. Yeah, these kind of lists can be all over the place, even though they are mostly right most of the time. Also, just as an aside in general I agree that PPP is not a great measurement of international city wealth. It's a good way to see how people live within their own country and what their human development is, but at the end of the day if i have a million dollars (or euros) and you have half a million, i'm still twice as rich as you, no matter what you can buy in your home country

Exactly. When I decided to create this thread, I went straight to the national statistical offices, the original source, with numbers expressed in the local currencies. Then, I converted to the US dollars using the exchange rates of the same year using IMF/World Bank data.

I'm not interested in those "ready-to-use" lists that are usually completely made up out of nowhere.

Yes - I looked at the data source on the above Brookings report and they pretty much just cite Oxford Economics. I then go on Oxford economics and the report is behind a pay wall. Oxford Economics claim to base the data on commuting patterns.

The difficulty with this is that detailed commute data is usually only released on the census - so for example the London 'origin-destination' data is only available in 2001 & 2011 so it already no longer tallies with any of the economic data in terms of time-series.

They then claim to have done this kind of analysis for 750 global cities - that sounds like an inordinate amount of work underpinned by a decent amount of guesswork - I won't be paying for the report!

One final one from me on the subject - I have mapped the London and Paris metro areas at NUTS3 level - I think London is slightly generous to the South West going towards Southampton and I think Paris is generous to the extreme North and South but I think the inner parts of these areas are within the metro areas....

I have also overlaid the statistics for the data within the shaded blue areas for both cities - the GDP figure is 2012 as this is the most recent available for Paris, both populations are from 2013.
