AvalonBay Plans 33 Stories at 1865 Broadway on the Upper West Side

Quote:
Just as AvalonBay Communities wraps up its big Brooklyn tower at 100 Willoughby Street, the developer has filed new building applications for a 33-story development at 1865 Broadway, just north of Columbus Circle on the Upper West Side.

The building would reach 416 feet into the air and span 270,550 square feet. It would bring 160 apartments and 34,000 square feet of retail to the corner of West 61st Street, the former headquarters of the American Bible Society. The apartments would be divided across 236,532 square feet of residential space, for units averaging 1,478 square feet each.

Retail would fill the first two floors of a six-story base, and 30 stories of apartments would be stacked on top. Diagrams show that the structure will be setback after the sixth floor, creating a shared roof deck on the seventh. The lower floors would have 13 to 15 units each, seven units apiece on the eighth through 13th floors, followed by a duplex on the 14th and 15th floors and two units per story. The remaining stories would hold three or four units each.

Demolition Underway at the Future Site of 1865 Broadway

Quote:
Currently shrouded in black, as if mourning its own impending demise, the former headquarters of the American Bible Society is set to come down in the coming months to make way for Avalonbay Communities' 1865 Broadway. The original 12-storey Brutalist tower — designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and built in 1965 — is set to be replaced by a 32-storey tower from the same firm. Set to rise at the corner of Broadway and West 61st Street in Midtown Manhattan, the new tower is expected to be completed by 2018.

First Official Rendering of AvalonBay's Condo-Rental High-Rise on the Upper West Side
January 5, 2017
Quote:
AvalonBay is forging ahead with their 300,000-square-foot residential tower at 1865 Broadway on the Upper West Side. Now with demolition of the pre-existing building nearly complete, the project’s first official rendering has been posted on the site's perimeter construction fence. The 33-story high-rise will ascend from a prime corner lot at Broadway and West 61st Street, between Columbus Circle and Lincoln Center. Its design penned by Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM) will accommodate 160 residential units and two levels of retail. Its two-tier massing provides for a 6-story podium and a setback 27-story slab rising to the height of 416 feet.

Exactly what I thought. Looks like the Canadian Pacific Plaza in Minneapolis (built in 1960)
