'Super Tower' to be tallest in Asean

GRAND CANAL LAND yesterday announced a project to build a "Super Tower", which will be Asean's tallest building and one of the world's top 10 skyscrapers when it is completed in six years.

Despite Thailand falling under another military-controlled government after the coup on May 22, G Land said its board of directors had approved going ahead with

the skyscraper, which will stand 615 metres tall and have a total of 125 floors. It will be part of the Bt100-billion Grand Rama 9 project, situated on a 73-rai (11.7-hectare) plot in Bangkok's new Rama IX-Ratchadaphisek business district.

"This skyscraper is going to be the new landmark of Thailand, a world-class attraction that everyone must visit at least once in his or her lifetime," said Yotin Boondicharern, chairman of G Land.

Banphot Hongthong, G Land's independent director and former permanent secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, said this project had been under way on and off for the past two years. The company finally decided to go ahead with it once it was convinced by the economic policy unveiled by the current government and given the geographic advantage of Thailand as a hub of Asean.

Yotin said G Land's major shareholders included his Charoenkrit Enterprise, which holds a 37-per-cent stake, the Channel 7 group that has 33 per cent, Bangkok Bank, which has 5 per cent, and Italian-Thai Development Group with a smaller stake. Four Thai banks will be the major lenders for the project, whose total construction cost will be Bt18 billion.

He said "Super Tower" was only a temporary name for the project. It will succeed the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, which top out at 452 metres, and a planned skyscraper in Indonesia as the tallest building in Southeast Asia.

The company has hired a US firm, Skidmore, Owing & Merrill, as its design consultant, but all other design and construction work will be by Thai companies, Yotin said.

Covering a total construction area of 320,000 square metres, the Super Tower will be the main building of the Grand Rama 9 complex that also includes office buildings, a shopping complex, luxury hotels, a convention hall and condominiums. The already-opened CentralPlaza Grand Rama 9 and Unilever's new Asean headquarters, which are under construction, are also part of the scheme.

According to G Land's report submitted to the Stock Exchange of Thailand yesterday, debt financing will account for about 60 per cent of the Super Tower's investment costs. It will partially open the tower and earn some rental and service incomes from 2016, before full completion six years from now.

Quite a nice tower for Bangkok which will reshape the skyline dramatically. Like all Asian megacities will look very much different due to all the new tall buildings they are building.

SOM เป็นแค่ที่ปรึกษาครับ แต่ออกแแบบโดย A49 บริษัทไทย

I prefer the previous render though. The sharper angles gives it a more aggressive stance and more futuristic as compared to a more graceful/elegant image of the new one. It looks like a lotus bud which is about to bloom

Bangkok's tallest building designed as friendly to environment

The "Super Tower", which will be the tallest building in Asean when it is completed in 2019 by Grand Canal Land (GLand), is designed as an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient facility.

It has been developed in line with the requirements for platinum certification of the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) programme. The project is designed by Thai company Architect 49.

To ensure compliance with the LEED, GLand has paid significant attention to details in all stages from design, to construction, and to the post-construction period.

Insulated glass is to cover the exterior of the Super Tower.

Inside, a highly efficient air-conditioning system will use variable air volume to ensure a constant temperature. Energy-efficient materials will be used, and solar cells will be installed to generate some electricity for the building.

Moreover, bicycle parking will be available, as will bathrooms to help cyclists clean up after travelling to the office, further encouraging them to choose this energy-saving transport mode.

G Land has recruited Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, one of the world's top experts in tall buildings, as the consulting firm for its Super Tower.

G Land chairman Yotin Boondicharern said the Super Tower would be a mixed-used project divided into three zones. First, it will have high-rise space for premium offices. Target groups are the banking, insurance and securities-trading industries, as well as brokering, fund-management financial counselling services. This building aims to be a hub for Asean regional headquarters.

Second, the Super Tower will include a six-star hotel to accommodate the world's top-class guests.

Third, it will have an observation deck to allow visitors to enjoy a stunning panoramic view of Bangkok from the city's tallest building.

Construction will start at the end of this year and is scheduled for completion in 2019.

Looks like a few rich developers had a little complex that other countries constructed bigger falli, what is the point of a 600 meter tall tower? It's hell with elevators, construction, pumping all water/air/and sewage around at it completely disconnects from the street level into the extreme. Sure, I like density, but does it have to be a bragging game?

The lack of high rise mania, surrounded in emptiness, which you see so often in developing cities like Shenzhen, Dubai, Shanghai, was what I always liked about BKK. I wouldnt like a big falli on my girlfriend either.

This is one more proof that something is really changing at global stage. I mean, where are all this supertalls poping out? It really seems there is somekind of supertalls inflation. I guess in next several years world will not be recognizable any more...
