R Hotels is to develop the first sharia-compliant, four-star resort and spa on Dubai's Palm Jumeirah, with the company targeting a Q4 2016 opening following AED500 million ($136.2 million) of investment.

Located on the East Crescent of the man-made island, the hotel will be the sixth property for R Hotels, the hospitality management division of R Holding. No operator has been confirmed yet, although a spokesperson told Hotelier Middle East that it will be an international hotel brand.

Aimed at leisure travellers, it will feature 259 rooms and modern recreational facilities, including a spa for men and women, gym, and swimming pool, and R Hotels is planning to also offer wellbeing treatments, plus fitness and nutrition programs.

Other features will include an all-day dining restaurant and poolside bar, as well as a sauna and steam bath. Amenities and activities exclusively for children will include a fully-supervised indoor and outdoor play area, and special kids’ entertainment.

Developer signs region’s leading cinema and entertainment destination for Nakheel Mall as retail bookings pass 50 per cent

Nakheel has signed the Middle East’s leading cinema and entertainment destination – VOX Cinemas – for Nakheel Mall on Palm Jumeirah, where more than half of the available retail space is now booked, the developer announced today.

Occupying a two-storey, 60,000 sq ft area at Nakheel Mall, VOX Cinemas will feature 15 theatres and provide the ultimate movie-going experience with the latest in cinema technology, the popular VOX MAX big-screen concept and the luxury VOX GOLD experience.

The Nakheel/VOX Cinemas partnership comes as more than half of the 100,000 square metres of retail space at Nakheel Mall is booked by a growing number of top brand names.

Located at the heart of Palm Jumeirah, Nakheel Mall will have five retail levels with 300 shops, three basement parking levels with 4,000 spaces, two anchor department stores, medical centre and fitness complex. There will also be a roof plaza with a host of fine dining restaurants, and a diverse selection of food and beverage outlets inside. The Mall will serve more than 30,000 residents on Palm Jumeirah, and provide a new destination for the wider Dubai community and the millions of tourists who visit the emirate each year.

Nakheel Chairman Ali Rashid Lootah said: “Our new collaboration with VOX Cinemas underpins our commitment to providing an unmatched range of dining, shopping, entertainment and lifestyle facilities at Nakheel Mall. We are delighted to welcome the region’s top name in cinema to the new centrepiece of Palm Jumeirah and look forward to a long and successful partnership as we continue our retail expansion across Dubai.”

Cameron Mitchell, CEO of VOX Cinemas, added: “VOX Cinemas is proud to confirm Nakheel Mall as one of its new locations in its continued expansion across the region. The cinema will reflect our promise to create great moments for guests with a high end cinema that incorporates the latest digital technology which will include our popular VOX MAX large screen concept and the more exclusive VOX GOLD luxury experience. We are honoured to be part of Nakheel’s vision for this new mall.”

Construction of the 418,000 square metre Nakheel Mall began earlier this year, with anticipated completion in 2017. Alongside Nakheel Mall will be The Palm Tower, Nakheel’s new, 52-storey hotel and residential complex, with 504 luxury residences, a 290-room hotel and rooftop restaurant, infinity pool and viewing deck.

Nakheel Mall is one of several new large-scale retail projects underway by Nakheel. Others include The Pointe at Palm Jumeirah, Deira Islands Mall, Deira Islands Night Souk, Jumeirah Village Mall and expansion to Dragon Mart Mall and Ibn Battuta Mall. The company’s first two neighbourhood retail centres – at Jumeirah Park and Discovery Gardens – opened earlier this year, with four more on the way at various Nakheel communities across Dubai.

Club Vista Mare last month.
More activity here than across the road at the Nakheel Mall.

Lol it's the same tree like on the Libanon flag. I think the flag was the inspiration
I like Dubai Palms more! The water breaking island is also optical much better and is used better in Dubai than here.
