Finally good to see work going on the canal corridor. This stretch of BRTS is going to be the most iconic one for Surat BRTS just like the Shivranjini corridor is for Amdavad.

- અડાજણની ઉપયોગિતા પાલિકાની આંખે વળગી follow more on the link provided below Source: http://www.divyabhaskar.co.in/articl...PHO.html?seq=4 |

Smoother ride on city roads
TNN | May 16, 2013, 10.55 PM IST SURAT: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to go for micro surfacing of its 1800 km roads. In the first phase, two lakh square metre of main roads would be covered. Most of the metro cities prefer micro surfacing of their roads as it ends the problem of uneven roads and also checks any increase in their height due to re-carpeting. The SMC's tender scrutiny committee (TSC) approved Rs 2.80 crore worth of tenders for micro surfacing of roads which will now be placed for approval before the standing committee. Micro surfacing layer, which is 6 to 8 mm in height, provides a protective coating to the roads, is relatively maintenance free and environment friendly. The method is cost effective compared to polymeric roads. The cost of asphalt cement concrete (ACC) is Rs 341 per square metre to Rs 125 per square metre for micro surfacing. It has four years warranty and is over in just 45 minutes so. Thus there are no issues of traffic jams on the city roads. "Micro surfacing enhances the durability of the road surface and doesn't allow water to percolate. There will be no pot holes on the roads after rains," city engineer Jatin Shah said.

City roads miss parking bays
Melvyn Reggie Thomas, TNN | May 17, 2013, 11.14 PM IST SURAT : JigneshGotawala, an interior designer, is scared to visit his client at GhodDod Road for he is worried about finding a decent place to park his car. His car was towed away by the traffic cops three times in the last one month as it was parked on the roadside. He has started to park his car in the lanes connecting GhodDod Road and from there he walks down half a km to his client's office. Tens of thousands of commuters in Surat, the fourth fastest growing city in the world, face parking problems on the main roads due to lack of measures by city police and Surat Municipal Corporation. The city may boast of good road infrastructure but parking bays for motor vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, have not been provided for. Parking vehicles on the road in areas like Ring Road, Majura Gate, Ghod Dod Road, Nanpura, Udhana Darwaja, Sahara Darwaja, Delhi Gate, Parle Point etc. comes with risk. If the towing vehicles of traffic police pass by, two-wheelers are towed away and the cars are locked with jammers. On an average 300 vehicles, mainly two-wheelers, are towed away by traffic department's 16 towing cranes and in the process the latter collects fine amount to the tune of Rs 16000 per day. As per section 117 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, the state government or any authority authorized by it may in consultation with local authority determine places where motor vehicles may stand indefinitely or for a specified period of time. City police commissioner had issued a notification a few months ago fixing alternate parking days on both sides of the road on Rajmarg from Chowk Bazaar to Railway station. This 'Eki-Beki parking' system has been thought of to curb haphazard parking. Commuters are required to park their vehicles on the left side of the road on the first day of the month and on the right side of the road on the second day. A senior police officer with traffic department said, "We have made alternate day parking arrangement on the Rajmarg, but we have not marked the roads with yellow stripes." Road graph Roads in the diamond city have four categories. The 120 feet width roads are arterial roads, roads having width between 80 and 120 feet are sub-arterial roads, 40 and 80 feet width roads are collector roads and those with less than 40 feet width are residential roads. As per SMC data, the 120 feet and above roads are 144.36 km long, 80 to 120 feet roads are 185.22 km long, 40 to 80 feet roads are 272.04 km long, 40 feet width and less roads are 1163.71 km long. The total length of the roads in the city is around 1800 km. Vehicle tribe As per the official data from Regional Transport Office (RTO), the diamond city has 21 lakh vehicles plying on the roads, including 16.32 lakh motorcycles and 2.49 lakh cars. On an average, around 300 motorcycles and 35 cars are registered with the RTO daily. Quotes : GH Deraiya, assistant commissioner of police (traffic), told TOI, "We are thinking of marking the roads, especially those housing commercial establishments like textile markets, malls etc, for vehicle parking. There will be separate parking bays on both sides of the road for the commuters." Jaydeep Chauhan, executive engineer of SMC's traffic cell, said, "We strongly feel that the city roads should have parking bays. It is the duty of the police department to issue notification for parking bay and then we will demarcate the areas with yellow stripes." |
