WEST |U/C| Mecca-Madina High-Speed Rail

Riyadh to issue tenders for Mecca-Medina high-speed rail link

Saudi Railways Organisation (SRO) is to issue tenders for the first construction contract on the $6bn Haramain high-speed rail link between Mecca and Medina on 17 September.

The tender for the civil works contract on the 444-kilometre-long railway between the holy cities has been delayed by an administrative hold-up coinciding with the summer recess in August, and Ramadan.

Tenders were due to be issued to the six prequalified consortiums in July, but were held up while the Municipalities Ministry finalised certification of the groups (MEED 6:8:08).

This process is now complete and, following consultation between the bidders and the SRO on 15 September, bidding is set to begin.

"We have spoken to the SRO, along with the other bidders, and expect the tenders to come out tomorrow [17 September]," says an official at Saudi Oger, the lead company in one of the six consortiums.

The SRO was not available for comment. However, an SRO official recently confirmed to MEED that bidding would begin this month.

The project will involve:

-Construction of a new line between Jeddah and Makkah

-Construction of a new line between Jeddah and Madinah

Currently, there are over 20 million travellers per year

- This number is expected to grow to 30 million by 2020

- 50% of travellers are likely to use the high speed rail connection

MMRL will provide a fast, safe, reliable and comfortable transport service
MMRL to propel Saudi Arabia into the world of high-speed rail

it's a good thing they're doing it now but such project should have been done like ten or fifteen years ago.

Mecca-Medina Rail Link (MMRL)

The Mecca-Medina rail network will link the holy cities of Mecca and Medina to the western port city of Jeddah.

The government of Saudi Arabia plans to develop the new railway infrastructure in the form of a high-speed line linking the three cities with six new stations.

The project's first phase will incorporate the construction of a 10-kilometre double guideway from Uhud to Quba via Haram and will have a capacity for 10,000 passengers an hour in each direction.

The MMRL is designed to operate trains with a speed of over 300 kilometres per hour.

Upon completion, it will reduce travel time between Jeddah and Mecca to 30 minutes, and between Jeddah and Medina to no more than two hours.

Estimated project value: $5.33bn

The project will involve:

-Construction of a new line between Jeddah and Mecca.

-Construction of a new line between Jeddah and Medina.

300km/h train and <3 hours from Mecca to Madinah, that will be a great news for KSA!

i supports their plan to build Jeddah as transit city, at least it will be a buffer zone so the train service will not be over-crowded.

5 firms competing for holy sites train
Saudi Gazette report
MAKKAH – Five international companies are in the race to win the coveted train project for the holy sites.
Prince Mit’eb Bin Abdul Aziz, Minister of Rural and Municipal Affairs, who is also Chairman of the Commission for Development of Makkah, Madina and other holy sites, will preside over the committee meeting on Shawwal 4 (Oct. 4) for opening bids tendered by international companies, said Dr. Habeeb Zain Al-Abdeen, the Commission’s designated Secretary General. He said the bids are being studied and the best one will get the project. The execution of the project will begin soon after Haj, he was quoted by Al-Madina Arabic daily as saying.
Designed with the holiness of the place in mind, the 570-km railway from Makkah to Madina will be parallel in most parts with the Road of Hijra which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) took when he moved from Makkah to Madina in 622 CE.
Owners of the properties needed for the projects will be generously compensated.
Meanwhile, King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, has approved the SR1.2 billion project of flood drainage that will cover Arafat, the roads linking the holy sites to Makkah, and part of Muzdalifah, Dr. Al-Abdeen pointed out.
Local companies’ bids for the project will start after Haj, and construction will begin as soon as the project is awarded, he said.
Dr. Al-Abdeen said the Higher Committee for Haj has approved the renting of residential towers built on Mina mountains to pilgrims this year. He added the renting will be handled by the Organization for General Insurance and the Public Pension Agency in coordination with the Haj Ministry.
The six towers have the capacity to accommodate about 20,000 pilgrims.
