I thought this had the best chance of all the Doha supertalls that are on hold to complete.
It's true, I heard the same.

Its practically ready, its due to host a convention soon.

On a side note, since "Doha Tower" has popped up on the most recent metro plan, perhaps we are in for a new supertall at this location.

New Qatar convention centre close to completion

The new Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC) could be opened to the public in early 2015, according to reports.

The Peninsula understands that the construction of the project is almost complete, and is expected to be handed over to the government by the end of the year.

The DECC is located in Doha’s West Bay, will span an area of around 90,000m2, and will offer five large halls for events.

Partitions separating the halls can be removed, making way for bigger events.

It is hoped that events including vehicles, boats or heavy machinery, will take place at the venue, as the halls have been designed to include no beams.

They should scale down the tower to a more reasonable level. There is no reason for a 500m+ tower there.

The ‘Smoke’ sculpture, which has been unveiled by Qatar Museums and the Qatar Tourism Authority at the Doha Exhibition & Convention Centre.

Qatar Museums (QM) and the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) have unveiled a monumental new artwork at the Doha Exhibition & Convention Centre (DECC). ‘Smoke’, the latest addition to QM’s collection, is a large-scale sculpture designed in 1967 by American artist Tony Smith (1912-1980). The giant, two-tiered aluminium sculpture is painted black and stands at 24ft tall. It is a combination of geometric components, including five tetrahedrons and 45 extended octahedrons. The sculpture’s powerful form was based on the artist’s fascination with geometry and the morphology of organic shapes like crystals and honeycombs. ‘Smoke’ is a celebration of the triangle – the base unit, which creates a strong and dominating sculpture. The sculpture is in line with QM’s focus on art, creativity and heritage, under the guidance of its chairperson, HE Sheikha al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, whilst exposing a new generation to thought provoking public art.

Tony Smith, a sculptor, visual artist, architectural designer, and a noted theorist on art, made more than 50 large-scale sculptures in the final two decades of his life. Smith’s work is included in leading international collections such as the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Menil Collection, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, Denmark; and the Kr?ller-Müller Museum, Otterloo, Netherlands.

According to this article, the Doha Convention Center and Tower counterpart is still on the list of slated construction projects in the Doha metro, not cancelled. (Set to open ~2019~2020)
