Yep, the second one and it was there until 1949. from wiki - The building was used by the veterans until 1948 and was subsequently torn down in 1949. The block was used as a parking lot until 1969. The Pacific Centre, including the TD Tower and the main Vancouver Eaton's Store (now Sears), was constructed between 1969 and 1972 and stands on the site today.

To bad they didn't keep it. It looks 100x better than the ugly white pillbox that is there now.

Before and Afters! I'll post some Aristocratic Restaurants(people apparently called them an Aristocrat or 'the Crat' or 'Risty's').

Aristocratic no. 7 at King Edward at Main. This property was a millinery, a jewellers, a Royal Bank, a chocolate shop, and a confectionery before becoming a diner in 1939. As a restaurant, it was Morray's Coffee Shop, Salsbury House, Aristocratic Restaurant (1948-61), and Helen's Grill (1961-present).

Aristocratic no. 3 at Cambie/13th. Built in 1936 then site sold to Nat Bailey in 1975, which became a White Spot.

Aristocratic no. 5 at Granville/Broadway. Probably the most famous one and opened in 1940. It's now a Chapters and if you look closely you can see the bookstore has added a blue Aristocrat neon sign in homage to the former restaurant.

Postcard: Hotel Vancouver, c.1954

"Hotel Vancouver, Vancouver, B.C. - This beautiful hotel is 21 stories high, 365 feet in height, and contains 600 rooms. It is located in the very heart of the city and serves as headquarters for Conventions and Service Clubs of this city. It is jointly owned by the C. P. and C. N. Railways."
Pub. by Vancouver Magazine Serv. Ltd., Vancouver, B. C.

Note the property to the immediate right of the Hotel Vancouver (on the SW corner of Burrard and Georgia Sts.) is the cleared site of the future Burrard Building (1955-56). Previously it was the site of the Palomar Ballroom.

Just wild that it wasn't that long ago in the scheme of things that this city looked like that.

A guess to where this is?

It's amazing how many cute old buildings have been uglified through "modernisation".

That must have been one of the very first Salsbury Houses. I miss Mr Big Nip!!

Downtown East Side - Van. 1980

Hastings Street at Carrall in Vancouver's troubled East End. Notice the electric trolley bus wires overhead?

Sorry for late reply. Ya, it's that restaurant on Cornwall/Yew. It had at some point added an addition to the west part of the property where the Marvelube sign is.... they had no idea back then how funny that sign would be now.

Anyway, as locals will know, this location was a 7-11 up till the early 90s I think, then a Senor Frogs from Mexico. That was probably the only location outside of Mex/Caribbean and it sucks it isn't there any more. It then became a Malones and now I think it's called Local. Jeez...what's with terrible names for restaurants now that all look exactly the same and offer the same food? Perhaps it has something to do with the patrons that visit them. Hmmm...no thanks.
