I remember Steveston in the early '70's. My sis would drive me there (she lived in Richmond at the time in a new development), and we'd buy shrimp from the fisherman right off the boat. We'd take them home and fry them in garlic and butter! Mmmmmmmmm......

Its still the same now, except the fishermen are mostly Vietnamese.

A lot of those photos definitely aren't of Steveston. Namu is on the central coast, west from Bella Coola. Lagoon Bay is on Haida Gwaii, and Alert Bay is just off the east coast of Vancouver Island, near Port McNeill. The closest of these is 250 km away from Steveston.

The giveaway: Steveston is the southwest tip of Lulu Island, now part of the city of Richmond. It is an alluvial island (in other words, FLAT), and while the mountains of the north shore can definitely be seen from there on most days, they aren't anywhere near as close as shown in these photos. The labels on the photos are a bit of a clue as well...

I do, having travelled through most of it, but for the rest there's a magic thing called Google.

Thanks for the correction, I overlook the fact that half of the 45 canneries
in the 1890's were located outside of Steveston.

The National Digital Archives are one of three central archives of the state archive network in Poland. The NDA collection contains 15 million photographs dated from the 1840s to present.

Some pictures of BC:

Vancouver, 1943

Tofino, 1919

Somewhere on the Vancouver Island, 1932

Trail Smoke Eaters hockey team, 1938

Canadian Pacific Railway, 1939

This is the Vancouver of my youth.. I took these photos back in February 1978, with my mum's Kodak Instamatic, which looked something like this:

Weirdly, I realise I took the same type of photos of exactly the same type of thing
that I do today!

This building, and the steam clock were both pretty new then. I thought both of them
were so spiffy that they could share a photo together. Gastown was my very favourite part of Vancouver; it was so groovy and a bit hippy dippy!:

We used to take the ferry from Tsawwassen over to Victoria. This was Craigdarroch Castle, built in 1890. I thought it was dreamy and wanted to live in it:
