Georgia Street Group, 1944

North side of Georgia Street across the street from the Provincial Courthouse and the then-new Hotel Vancouver in November 1944.

The buildings, from right to left, are the Hotel Georgia (built 1926-27, still extant), the Devonshire Hotel (1925-1981) and the Georgia Medical-Dental Building (1929-1989). For many years, these blocks on Georgia Street (between Burrard and Seymour Sts.) lent a classy feel to this part of downtown Vancouver.

Beyond the Georgia Medical-Dental Building is Christ Church Cathedral (built 1889-95, still extant) and, on the other side of Burrard Street, the Standard Oil gas station where now stands the Royal Centre complex (built 1971-72).

100 Block of Water Street - 1910s/2010

This looks west down Water Street and the building on the right on the corner is still there as well as some of the buildings further up the block. I love that horse and cart in the old photo as it shows how the area has changed from being industrial and full of warehouses, most of which have been converted to residential and business lofts, to a tourist area, as indicated by the two ladies on the left in the bottom photo.

Parking Lot (Eaton's), 1961

Parking lot at Granville-West Georgia-Howe Streets. Created after the demolition of the second CPR Hotel Vancouver (1916-1949) after purchase by the T. Eaton Company, it existed for twenty years until the construction of Pacific Centre's Toronto Dominion Tower (constructed 1969-71) and the Eaton's department store (1970-72).

Birks Building, 1946

Birks Building, 718 Granville Street (SE corner Granville and West Georgia Streets). June 1946 photograph.

Architects: Somervell and Putnam.

Built 1912-13. Demolished 1974 to make way for the Vancouver Centre development. Public outrage over the loss of this elegant building launched Vancouver's heritage conservation era.

West Pender & Beatty Streets, 1939

West Pender Street at Beatty Street, looking west in October 1939.
Visible in the photo are the City Health Department building (formerly the City Hospital addition, 1889) and the Rotary Clinic (1919, partially visible) on the left and the Central Public School (1890) in the center (demolished to make way for the Vancouver Vocational Institute (1948-49). The Vancouver Sun Tower (originally the World Tower, 1912) is on the extreme left on the SE corner (only its sign is visible).

800 Block of Thurlow St - 1969/2010

This is looking at the south west corner of Thurlow and Robson and the top picture is a prime example of the Robson street of old. And how fitting a Starbucks occupies the now picture! This is the Robson street of today and this newer glass two-story building has replaced the old shops that used to be here, as well as the building in behind. The two apartments in the background, Le Guernesey on the left and Cameron House on the right, are both still there and in great shape.

Love your then/now stuff! Great work. For fun I've been doing London but I'm using Google streetview as my photos aren't sufficient enough. It's just for my own satisfaction and I don't think I'll be posting them anywhere though.

I love the ones people do of the pic within an old pic like this one of Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
