Metro work begins -- Print version, from ET

After an inexplicable delay of 19 months, groundwork for the first corridor of Mumbai Metro project began on Friday without any indication of a time frame for its completion. Ironically, no senior official of MMRDA, one of the implementing agencies, attended the function, indicating a friction between the private player and the state government.

The delay, caused by several problems which remain unresolved even now, has escalated the project cost from Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 2,356 crore. The foundation stone for the 12.4 km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor was laid by prime minister Manmohan Singh in June 2006 and work was expected to begin in October 2006. The delay has extended the tentative deadline of the project to 2010 from 2009.

Yeah about time to I say!

Reading from the article above from India Times it is a shambles of organisation from some of the parties involved. If construction started on time then Phase two would have been stated for completion next year. Now the BJP are claiming that the project is illegal!

Mumbai metro

Politics, what to say, kids are better than politicians.

Any construction photos? I know someone brought this up earlier - any new station renderings out yet? I had read earlier that there was going to be a metro station design competition for Mumbai metro stations, similar to the one that took place in Bangalore. I hope that they come out with some good stations. Beat Dubai stations . Mumbai Metro One should update their website with latest construction photos, construction updates/news and renderings. By the way does anyone have the rendering of how the EMUs/ trains will look like. I mean its livery/ colour scheme and logo. They have nothing on this on their website. They really need to update their website

BMC plans multi-level, underground parking near Metro stations

Quote:
Mumbai, February 11 : Giving planning for the much-delayed Metro Rail in the city a further boost, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has jumped into the fray, deciding to integrate its plans for underground and multi-level parking lots with the Metro Rail project.

These parking lots will now be a stone’s throw away from various stations along the proposed Metro Rail routes.

Consultants Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have been asked to carry out a survey of the possible number of people boarding and alighting at each of the stations so as to arrive at an estimate of the requirement for the car parking lots. In New Delhi, the DMRC is responsible for executing the Metro Rail project as well as for creating surface parking space ranging from 1,000 sq metres to 6,000 sq metres in each of the 18 stations in Line I of the Delhi Metro.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Manu Kumar Srivastava said that the BMC and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is executing Mumbai’s Metro Rail project, have already had joint meetings to decide on the locations of the proposed underground parking lots.

The BMC had earlier shortlisted 21 locations for underground car parks and one multi-level car park at Zaveri Bazaar. Tenders have been floated for two of these—one below the stretch from Regal Cinema junction in Colaba to Hutatma Chowk and the other at Crawford Market.

Officials added that since Hutatma Chowk is one of the 16 stations of the third corridor (Colaba-Mahim-Bandra) of the Metro Rail, the BMC has already asked the MMRDA for details so that the parking lot is in consonance with the plans for the Metro station there.

As for plans to have an underground car park near Siddhivinayak Temple, these will have to be scrapped since the location coincides with the site for the Metro Rail station.

Other sites for the proposed underground parking lots will now be reworked so that they will be located at a five-minute walk from most of the 57 stations along the first three routes of Mumbai’s Metro Rail project.

Though officials are not very sure of exploring the underground option due to utilities coming in the way of digging roads, the BMC is planning to select this option wherever there are open plots close to the proposed stations. In other areas, the option of multi-level parking would be explored.

“Unlike Delhi, which has lots of open space, here the MMRDA has to struggle to even get space for constructing a staircase at the station. Under such circumstances, when the BMC—which owns a lot of land—agreed to integrate their parking masterplan for the city with the Metro Rail, it was a welcome move,’’ said K Vijaya Lakshmi, MMRDA’s senior transportation planner.
