This is a thread about Berlin-related topics which don't fit anywhere else in the project topics. You can discuss about any issues concerning Berlin - statistics, random news, events, data, demography, new or lost jobs, economy, urban visions for the city etc...

But please: Always consider the Netiquette! Spam won't be tolerated & may lead to infractions and deletion of posts asap. Discuss in an objective & constructive way. This ain't a skybar!

Cordial thanks for the attention.
:)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Danke & viel Freude! :)

The capital city of Germany, a huge city, has this size of an airport?
Berlin has no significant metropolitan area due to the low population density in East Germany. Its airports only have to serve about 4-5 million people which is not much.

BBI is useless

better build a 4th landebahn in Leipzig (3rd one already finished)
just 1h Autobahn from Berlin, one could build a Transrapid line next to it and it would still be cheaper and more effective then BBI since Leipzig is a Boomtown!

I too was surpised by this when I visited Berlin for the 1st time two years ago and flew into Tegel (TXL), which was suppose to be Berlin's biggest. But it does make sense as some mentioned above how half (or almost half) of Berlin being "Soviet" affected it. Remember that the Berlin Wall existed during the 3 decades when commercial aviation expanded the most. With West Berlin being an island in an East Germany and loosing so much potential tourism, and East Berlin being closed to most of the world, it seems to me this would result in little commercial aviation into West Berlin.

Even today, with a Berlin that is and continues to recover, Berlin doesn't have the commercial air traffic of London, Paris or even Frankfurt, Madrid or Rome. And yet, Berlin seems to me like an amazing city with so many stories to tell from the last two centuries and the awesome subcultures that have developed in the last one. But if Berlin is pulling in many more tourists now, I don't think it has the business transactions of the other cities I just mentioned. And business travel plays a very big role in places like London, Paris and Frankfurt. Well, Berlin is just not getting this. The city is still recovering and hasn't managed to become the capital of Germany it was suppose to become...atleast not yet. So we won't be seeing very big air traffic numbers even with the new airport (expansion), or will we?

And despite Berlin being a very big city, it's metro area isn't that big like London's and Paris' and Moscow's. Anyway, you know about how Berlin lost huge population numbers due to WWII and the Wall.

Finally, in Europe, a lot of travel occurs by train. This means that unless a major airline has its hub there, you will see much less air traffic. Well, Lufthansa has its hub in Frankfurt, not Berlin. Thus as far as air traffic goes, Berlin may as well be grouped with Manchester or Lyon...well, maybe not that bad...more like Milan or Barcelona.

Finally, like someone said, Berlin is in East Germany. I would add East Germany has lost population and those who are still there are not the most positioned to travel, unfortunately, due to high unemployment. Those traveling more are most likely living near Frankfurt, Koln, Ruhr area, Munich or Hamburg and using those airports.

Finally, finally, Germany is a highly dispersed country. It has several medium to medium-large metro areas rather than one very large metro area with medium-sized metro areas only down the line, like France. In France, you jump from 10.5 million approx (in Paris) down to about 1.7 (Lyon), 1.6 (Marseille), and 1.2 (Lille). These are all rough numbers, ok. Germany is more like 5.7 (Ruhr area), 4.2 million (Berlin), 2.5 (Hambourg), 2 milliion (Munich), 1.9 (Frankfurt) and 1.8 (Koln). It's more distributed.

correct... you absolutely right.

I agree with Ludi (and disagree with the Berlin-bashers who normally originate from Frankfurt or southern Germany) - Berlin is catching up. This year all 3 (small) airports combined will manage close to 22.5m passengers - that's not bad. It's growing well above the German and even European average. Why?... cause it's a major tourist hub! .. unlike Frankfurt or Munich, who are more business hubs. Berlin makes up for the lack of business by attracting tourists. Plus it is the political centre of Germany again, and with it it attracts lobby groups and lobbyist - and boy do they love to travel. :)

All in all I think the growth numbers over the past years speak for themselves. Berlin gets its deserved modern (sub-)Hub... and due to the shortage of slots elsewhere in Europe, airlines will gradually increase the number of intercontinental flights to Berlin.

Hopefully the Berlin small airport problem should be solved when the new Berlin Bradenburg International Airport opens in late 2011.

Frankfurt has the biggest airport, cause of the financial area. Isn't Frankfurt the biggest airport of Europe? It (at least) used to be the biggest airport, I think.

Germany's cities are more compareable with American cities. Not like France or UK. Washington makes big politics, but in other cases it's pretty much unimportant. New York is a big cultural melting pot and also the big financial area of America. L.A., Miami and Las Vegas are important for the tourism. There are a lot of cities with their individuel identity. And Washington is "just" the capital of America. Politically important, but nothing more.

It's a bit similar in Germany. Compared to Washington Berlin has some advantage though. It's more interesting for tourists, cause of its history. Berlin is also the biggest city in Germany. It's a melting pot for creative people from all over the world. A bit like London, New York, Paris and so on. But it has no big economy. The money is in other cities all over Germany. Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart ...

http://www.berlinonline.de/berliner-zeitung/berlin/117550/index.php

Demographie: Berlin rettet Brandenburg

Quelle: dpa/Tagesspiegel

http://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/Brandenburg-Brandenburg-Demographie;art128,2738145
