Tiffendale is growing year by year - doing much better than afriski, imo. We went snowboarding mid-July. Quite expensive - at least you save on flights. Very very nice however.

Sooo - what is the story re off piste skiing at Tiffindell, Jakes?
I see they only really have one groomed run, but there appears to be a huge bowl of mountain to ski, and when they get their big dumps of snow, there must be plenty skiing off the resort..?

Tiffindell reopens

Tiffindell has changed ownership, and has unfortunately been receiving a lot of bad press recently. I am not going to go into details, but I'm sure most of you have heard some of the rumours going around.

Tiffindell is open and taking bookings, our first real snow (not just a couple flakes) landed yesterday and the new snow cannons have been turned on as well. Three new 4x4 vehicles have been purchased for shuttles, the slope extended a further 300m, bars and pubs upgraded where necessary, all old maintenance issues have been resolved. Don't worry, you can still drink shots hanging upside down from ski boots !

The first set of new arrivals will be on the slopes this Sunday. Tiffindell closed it's doors out of season due to low booking rates and high cost of running the resort as well as to catch up on various maintenance projects and construction.

The new snow machines have been installed, a significant upgrade on the old sprinkler system.

SST Group has taken over the sales and marketing of the resort and are managing the logistics of bookings and so forth. The direct Cape Town number is 021 556 4256, the 086 number on the website has be routed through to the Cape Town number as well as the emails.

Don't worry, I will ! I really wish I could let you know of some of the plans for next year, but unfortunately we've decided to keep people in suspense. I will say that the new ownership and marketing direction will only enhance the Tiffindell experience, without losing the party vibe.

If you want to keep informed, then register an account with www.mymate.sstgroup.co.za . I am building a community section specifically for Tiffindell in there, and when it's open a mass mail will be sent out.

A bit of a late response but am just seeing and exploring this thread now.

Tiffendale actually *IS* in the Drakensberg. The southern Berg, to be exact. Remember, the Berg is a few hundred kilometres across. MOST of the Berg is in KZN, but parts of it stretch into the Eastern Cape, Free State, and, of course, Lesotho.

Check out the first link for a map of the Southern Berg. Tiffendale is located very close to Barkly East and Rhodes (towards the mid right hand side of map below), both of which are located in the Eastern Cape.

Interestingly, the nearest major city to Tiffendale is Bloemfontein, not Durbs.

What kind of special ? ?

But seriously, this season is going great, we've had nights of 5cm snowfall in one night, hardly need to use the snow cannons (although they're so much fun we do anyway).

If you're in the area (or not too far away) then come take advantage of our day pass. It includes lunch, lift pass, emergency medical care and the equipment. You will need a 4x4 or at least a 2x4 cab with diff lock to get up there with this much snow, failing that we can organize a shuttle from Rhodes for you. Tiffindell is approximately 24km from Rhodes.

It looks like we will have snow until at least mid-August, most likely through to early September but I would go sooner than later just to be safe.

Controversial ski resort up for auction after appeal court judgement

South Africa's only ski resort will go under the hammer after a successful judgement was handed down by a full bench in the Supreme Court of Appeal on the 30 September 2011.

The troubled resort was involved in a three year legal wrangle when the Van Eck Family - which owned Tiffindell - agreed to sell it to Tiffski Property Investment, which in turn promised to invest in the development and lease it back to the Van Eck family.

Ivan van Eck, the founding director of Tiffindell Ski Ltd, blamed David Taylor, Director of Emperica Marketing who controversially tried to bring Starbucks to South Africa, for the bankruptcy saying that once Taylor got involved in a deal with the ski resort, it was the beginning of the end.

Van Eck sold a controlling share to Taylor and Le Roux under Tiffski Properties to recapitalise in a R22-million transaction in 2007. But Van Eck raised questions about the transfer of assets between Tiffski and Tiffindell, as well as underpayment by Taylor for Van Eck's shares; Van Eck was subsequently fired as managing director. He claims that he lost R11-million in the deal. Other investors also threatened legal action against the directors of both Tiffindell and Tiffski.

"With regard to my personal involvement in the matter, you should note that I was never a director of Tiffindell Limited and that I was not personally the subject of any litigation," he said. "I was a director of the property holding company, Tiffski (Pty) Ltd until January 2010."

When the deal is believed to have turned sour amid financial disputes between the Tiffski directors, the company was liquidated and liquidators were appointed to bring a court action to reverse the deal. The High Court in Johannesburg ruled against the liquidators who immediately appealed against its decision.
The recent Appeal was successful and now Auction Alliance has received instructions from joint liquidators, Gavin Gainsford and Shawn Williams of KPMG, to sell the controversial ski resort.

According to the auctioneers, all operations ceased 24 months ago, while the resort was subject to legal wrangling that was finally resolved, giving the liquidators powers to sell.

The resort, established in 1993, covers 101.8 hectares and is situated on the slopes of the Ben Mcdhui Mountain - which at 3001m above sea level is the highest peak in the Eastern Cape - in the southern Drakensberg near the Lesotho border. Snow is a regular feature in the winter months and the resort was run as a successful ski lodge since being established in 1993. Numerous improvements to the property include a main lodge, offices, shops, bars, restaurant, lounges, hotel rooms and chalets, along with staff accommodation, workshops and sheds. Considering that no maintenance has taken place since 2009, the interior is in a surprisingly fair condition but the exterior needs attention.

Electricity is available from Eskom and water is provided via the numerous natural springs in the area. Minor amenities are available in the picturesque town of Rhodes, which is situated 26 km away, while major amenities such as financial institutions, shops and medical facilities can be found in Alliwal North, situated approximately 150Km away. The only competitor, running a similar operation albeit on a smaller scale, is situated 300km away in Lesotho.

"While the property would need significant capital investment to restore it to its former glory, this is still a once off opportunity to acquire a unique investment property in a pristine mountain setting." comments Bradley Stephens, National head of Legal for Auction Alliance.

The auction will take place in Sandton, Johannesburg on the 24th November 2011.

We are shameless. We'll claim Tiffendale as ours, especially if it becomes functional again. If it remains dysfunctional, we'll attribute it to being Eastern Cape.

Tiffindell Ski auction to top bidder
18 Jun 2012
South Africa’s only ski resort, Tiffindell Ski, will go under the hammer next month, on July 12that Summer Place in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

More surprisingly, this 101ha piece of prime Eastern Cape real estate will be sold ‘lock stock and barrel’ in an absolute or ‘no reserve’ auction, a development that will likely see hospitality companies, developers, investors and a myriad of others wage a battle to acquire the once-flourishing winter wonderland.

During its controversial, bitter and much-publicised demise, which began in 2007 with a would-be sale gone sour and ended in October last year after a draining but dramatic four year legal battle, international professional services giant, KPMG, were in 2009 appointed liquidators (masters reference G156/09), and now the resort will finally be sold to the highest bidder.

This is according to Nick Pretorius, Sales Director at The High Street Auction Company, which along with Ndali Michael James Auctioneers will conduct the Tiffindell sale. Although absolute auctions are extremely rare in the local auction industry, he says the decision was taken to hold one for Tiffindell because an absolute auction is the "Ultimate True Auction" and the absence of a reserve price will ensure that the highest bid will determine the true market related value of the property.

“Absolute auctions are uncommon because there is no price protection on the seller’s behalf."

However, Pretorius explains they agreed with the liquidators that because everyone has to participate in an absolute auction, a simple case of the highest bidder wins will generate the best possible price in current market conditions.

The resort is situated deep in the Southern Drakensburg on a farm near the picture postcard hamlet of Rhodes in the Eastern Cape, and it is cradled in the shadow of the majestic Ben McDhui Peak.

There is potential for further development of the property and the bidding war is set to begin.
