I can understand your point - as you appear to be based in Nottingham...
For me though, I like a drink at a big concert - so I can't drive to Nottingham. The trains and coaches are a waste of time in the evening. So my other/only option is a hotel, which just adds to the cost. Therefore, as Leicester is a big city - I personally would like us to have a larger concert venue. As well as this, our city needs better central sports and entertainment facilties. Swimming, skating and bowling have been mentioned. Just anything that would attract families and increase the city centre offer would be welcome... |

That is the killer point.
If Derby can deliver - there is not a single reason why Leicester can't. Also all claims that Nottingham and Birmingham are close enough to Leicester, are null and void. Derby changes everything... |

Well with the greatest of respect, seems to me a bit like a 'Notts has an arena, so we want one too' argument.
If anything Leicester could focus on areas that aren't already covered by Nottingham, rather than competing with it. For example, Leics does rather well with the rugby and is obviously the rugby capital of the region, if not the country. Why waste money doing the same old regurgitated stuff when there must be plenty of other options that Leicester could be at the forefront of the region, if not the country in.

It's obviously not "notts has an arena so we want one" argument. It's perfectly reasonable to want to go to gigs and concerts without having to travel. |

It would be odd if Nottingham didn't have an arena, or large indoor venue. It is even odder that Derby, Plymouth, Peterborough, Exeter and Coventry have these facilities - and Leicester does not... I'm equally puzzled by what benefits Leicester could gain from its rugby heritage? Unless you mean, make Welford Road a completely indoor venue and attach a swimming pool and entertainment complex on the side? |

When it comes to an arena, the town with the best infrastructure to support one will succeed. Bands won't add Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Birmingham to a tour. They'll go for whatever's financially viable.
You build an arena in Leicester, you will need to cater for 10,000 potential visitors with car parking, entertainment etc. It's a hell of a lot more to think about than 'let's have an arena'. I'd love an arena in the city, but at the moment, can't see it working, and certainly can't see one in Derby working short-term. It's like the housing estates that are built without shops, schools, doctors etc. Thorpe Astley was one in particular (it's better now). You must have the amenities first so that people will come. |

Leicester already has the capacity to do this. It hosts football games with three times as many people!

Yes, but in addition to those games. You have a Monday night game at the Walkers, plus arena show by the latest group...

I think The Plantagenet Arena has a certain ring to it.

Why isn't the Notts Arena known as the Su Pollard Arena? Isn't it customary to name large venues after the most famous person from the city?

Leicester could build an arena like Derby's but it's going to struggle now. Derby got there first. The gap in the market is the £30m+ arena holding 10,000 people. The arena that's bigger than the NIC.
That's unlikely. Unless someone is not worried about money. |

Just been having a look at the events schedule for Nottingham Arena (what a load of old tat).. The argument of missing out on decent bands is flawed because the decent bands general play at Rock City.. Leicester would be better off trying to get a decent mid size music venue going. I do think Leicester has missed the boat here as they could have nipped in ahead of Derby with the Velodrome concept especially with the cycling history it has. Basically an Arena is going to need an anchor and Notts has the Ice Centre and Panthers (just done the triple).. Derby have this Velodrome and multi-purpose sports thing going down.. If there was a financial viable opportunity then i'm sure someone would have/will exploit it.. However the council should hang their heads in shame letting Derby get in ahead of them with the Velodrome..

I agree totally about the disgrace of allowing Derby to steal a sport that was associated with Leicester and providing the type of facility, that Leicester should have been aiming for. It should be a hanging heads in shame scenario.
I also agree that much of the offer at the Nottingham Arena is a bit rubbish. They do still have some decent stuff on there sometimes. It is not just about music though. Leicester has a different community and there are a lot of other events that would attract large crowds in our city. We also need a large community sports and or leisure facility - and something that can generate revenue from events and conferences. It is not just an arena that is needed. |
