Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden, located in Västra Götaland county, and is a place where such large companies like 'Volvo' or 'SAAB' were established. Also, the city is known for the largest port in Scandinavia which has some of the most up to date facillities. Gothenburg has always been the city where infrastructure played an important role in its hystory and i would like to invite You all to participate in a discussion about the existing and planned infrastructure projects in the city and whole the county.

Existing transport system

Nowadays the transport system of the Greater Gothenburg consists of tram (spårväg), bus (buss, stombuss), commuter rail (Göteborgs pendeltåg) and ferry services. The agency responsible for public transport services in the city and whole the county is called 'Västtrafik' and its ownership is shared equally between the county and the 49 municipalities in the region. The fleet consists of approximately 1700 vehicles.
You can book/purchase a ticket or plan you journey and find much more information in the official site of the company: www.vasttrafik.se.

Gothenburg tram network (Göteborgs spårvägar)

The Gothenburg tram network is a part of the public transport system organised by 'Göteborgs Spårvägar AB', controlled by 'Västtrafik'.
There are 161 km of tram tracks in the city and due to this fact Gothenburg hosts the largest tram network in Scandinavia which is used by more than 200 trams that serve 13 lines in daytime (5 at nightime). The trams perform about 2000 trips and cover 30000 km per day. The figures are expected to increase when the second stage of Kringen (Kollektivringen, the public transport ring) is finished.
The tram system is very important for Gothenburg as it is the background of the transport system in this city. The map with the tram lines can be seen here:

Please note, that the trams and the lines have the specific color code which match together and make it easier to use the system. Different colors identify different tram lines as follows:

Tynnered – Östra Sjukhuset (15.59 km, 33 stops)
Högsbotorp – Krokslätt (10.10 km, 22 stops)
Marklandsgatan – Kålltorp (12.68 km, 30 stops)
Mölndal – Angered (19.26 km, 21 stop)
Torp – Länsmansgården (13.78 km, 29 stops)
Länsmansgården – Kortedala (24.55 km, 46 stops)
Tynnered – Bergsjön (21.05 km, 35 stops)
Frölunda – Angered (21.31 km, 25 stops)
Kungssten – Angered (18.98 km, 21 top)
Guldheden – Eketrägatan/Biskopsgården (8.79 km, 17/23 stops)
Saltholmen – Bergsjön (21.83 km, 38 stops)

12 Centralstationen – Liseberg (a hystorical, touristic line)

Marklandsgatan – Linnéplatsen (17.3 km, 10 stops).

The types of tramcars currently running in Göteborg are:

M28, ASJL 1965–1967, 701–711, 713–763, 766, 767;
M29, Hägglund 1969–1972, 801–838, 840–857, 859, 860;
M31 (previously M21 ASEA 1984–1992, rebuilt with low-floor middle articulation), ASEA/MGB 1998–2003, 300–379;
M32 Sirio, AnsaldoBreda 2005–, (as of December 2006) 401-440;

The first delivery of the next batch of M32s i scheduled for this year. The new M32s will be numbered 441-465.

Bus service

Even thought the tram-light rail network is very important for Gothenburg, the bus network has no less importance, since the bus services contribute the tram network and servem ore distant destinations.
The city bus lines can be visible in the following map (may be quite old):

(c) urbantransport-technology.com

The majority of buses serve the routes 24 hours a day. Also, many of the buses, like airport shuttles and regional ones (except the color coded express busses - green, orange, red, et.c), usually run as the city buses and at small time intervals.
The buses that are used in Gothenburg are comfortable and environment - friendly, hybrid 'Volvo' and 'Scania' cars. Also, there is a more specific type of buses used in the most popular lines - they are 2.5 m long 'Volvo' buses (stombuss), which are known to be one of the longest city buses in the World.

Gothenburg commuter rail (Göteborgs pendeltåg) system

Gothenburg commuter rail (Göteborgs pendeltåg) is the commuter rail system associated with Gothenburg. The trains go on the main - line tracks, shared with long-distance trains and freight trains.
There are two major lines - one between Gothenburg and Alingsås, the second between Gothenburg and Kungsbacka. The other lines are regional rail lines, going to cities further away, with a higher speed, more sparse stops. These are:

Vänersborgståget (Gothenburg Central Station - Trollhättan - Vänersborg; 86 km, 4 stations);

Boråståget (Gothenburg Central Station - Borås; 71 km, 7 stations);

Bohuståget (Gothenburg Central Station - Stenungsund - Uddevalla - Strömstad; 180 km, 17);

Skövdetåget (Gothenburg Central Station - Alingsås - Skövde; 144 km, 8 stations).

A fifth rail line that can be counted as a regional rail line is the Öresundståg (Gothenburg-Malmö-Copenhagen-Helsingør (398 km) ).
The regional trains to Borås, Vänersborg and Skövde go in addition to the long-distance trains, filling up gaps between them, to create one-hour schedule. Also, the most used connection on these lines is the connection to Borås, if including the about 30 daily buses that go since the railway can't support the demand. There are plans to build a new railway here.
There are already many plans for expanding the regional and commuter rail systems, since many people (almost the same maount as the number of citizens in the city) commute to the city during every day.
The system is served by X11 electric multiple units.

Ugh. So one basically has to own a car to get to the commuterrail station? not so smart planning. Better than nothing tho and I'm sure there'll be buses stopping there.

From looking at Bohus, it seems like it's only a tiny sneeze of a settlement anyway with inconveniently located train tracks in the first place. The railway station seems to connect both the industrial estate with the settlement so it's not that badly planned to be honest. I'd have to see the other stations to pass full judgement.

Banaväg i Väst

Even though we have already discussed some aspects of the this project, i would like to present it in short facts:

One the projects that is already being realized is 'Banaväg i Väst': a dual-track commuter line till Trollhättan is currently under contruction.
According to information provided by 'Traffikverket' the line will be 75 km. long and it will complement a future high speed railway line till Oslo (Norway). As many people from Trollhättan commute till Gothenburg by car every day, the new railway line, hopefully, might reduce the car traffic in the city because the time spent by commuting to the city using a new railway line is planed to be as short as 15 - 20 minutes.
The construction work was started in 2004 and is expected to be finished next year. The railway tracks are already built and now the 7 new stations: Gamlestaden, Surte, Bohus, Nödinge, Nol, Älvängen and Tingberg are under contruction.
The cost of project is apx. 10 billion SEK. The interesting detail is that a highway (no. 45) which lies near a new railway line is being expanded, too.

More information about 'Kringen'?

Maybe someone can give us more information about 'Kringen'? It is a tramway tunnel under the central part of the city which will connect the most major places in the center of the city:

Actually, there is not much information available in the net (or it is just my mistake?), but it would be nice to know the status of this project and when it will be finished?

Quite hypocritical opinion, no? You do realize that the monorail yimby wants to build through the city, and which I believe you support, will have a similar impact but right in the city centre. But just because this is for cars it's bad right? Seriously, Partihallslänken goes over the already existing motorway, railway, and industrial landscape (a couple of warehouses from the 70's were demolished), how is that a negative impact on the "city"?

The only thing one can really criticize is the choice of building a tunnel instead of a all low or middle-high, all purpouse bridge.

Edit: But sine you love to draw up your own ideas on maps I'd like to see if you can come up with something better that solves the absolute standstill during rush hour.
