For some reasons, inferiority complex is deeply embedded into our genes and any thing western is glorified with eyes blindfolded. Why don't we accept the diversity and be proud of what we have in some cases? This is India and we follow Indian system. Why do people from the west want us to change according to them? If they want to make business in India, they have to learn about Indian system and while we make business with them, we obviously get used to their system. Trying to impose uniformity on almost everything in this world is absolute stupidity.

Its not Arabic System. Its Indian System. Its called Arabic System by some fools in the West long time ago because they learnt this system from the Arabs who had actually learnt it from us. Crore and Lakh are derived from Sanskrit or Prakrit.

Indian system is more convenient to use in cases such as when we say "millions of people were affected". This could mean 1 million to 999 million. But when we say "lakhs of people were affected" it means 1 lakh to 99 lakhs. So, in a way it is more specific.

But we is measuring our economy in trillions of dollars. And so do the rest of the world. So it would make sense to do what others are doing? but people would fin it weird to use 100 thousand instead of lakhs.

It actually depends on situation. In case of measuring economy in makes sense to use billions or trillions but same is not applicable elsewhere. We measure our salaries in lakhs instead of millions.

Speaking of numbers etc., I have met several Americans in the IT industry who have worked with so many Indians, that they have started using terminology such as "lakh" and "crore" to communicate with Indians. For example, a few days back an Indian was dictating the contents of an email to an American lady and he told this American lady, "that table is quite huge, it has 1 crore records and every day we add one lakh fresh records - please do mention that in the email". The lady typed in the email as he was speaking, and wrote, "this table has 10 million records already, and we load in around hundred thousand new records everyday". She automatically translated "Indianspeak" into "Americanspeak", on the fly.
At the end of the day, it is about which system is in vogue, and that is dictated by the people who run the industry. With the number of Indians in the IT industry all over the world, "lakh" and "crore" are quite well known in IT circles. As Indians get into other fields such as finance for example, "lakh" and "crore" will become more popular as the days progress.

Up to 100 crores Indian system is easier ..after that we have shift to billions and trillions to avoid awkward numbers such as 3 lac crores.

Arab and Kharab arent used in Indian English. Lakh and Crore are used in Indian English (and then hundreds or thousands of crores, or billions is also used). All of the government's documentation has to be written in English, so common system is used. |

Hindi newspapers regularly use "Arab" and actually the name of the king od Magadh before Chandragupta Maurya was "Mahapadmananada" because he was so so rich.
adam_india : I really think you got the reason right though I have no idea why we do so. |
