Southern Railway has started
replacing old second class sleeper
compartments in several express
trains with three-tier AC coaches,
leading to a less number of second
class sleeper coaches in many trains.
Sources said that serious talks were
taking place at the top level in the
railway board to replace all the second
class compartments in express and
superfast trains with AC coaches
within the next five-six years.
Lalu prasad also did similar thing by increasing the tatkal ticket

Build Vriddhachalam-Kumbakonam line early

The Associations say the proposal is awaiting Railway Board approval.

The demand for laying a new railway line in the Kumbakonam-Jayamkondam-Vriddhachalam section before the forthcoming Mahamaham festival, has gathered momentum, with various organisations making a fervent plea for the same.

The demand of these associations, particularly the All Traders’ Association Kumbakonam, Thanjavur District Rail Users’ Association, Rail Passengers’ Association, Papasanam, got a shot in its arm when this issue was raised by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Rajya Sabha member V. Maitreyan in the Upper House recently.

Mr. Maitreyan, hailing from Thanjavur district, said: “The survey for the 65-km Kumbakonam–Vriddhachalam new railway line via Jayamkondam and Andimadam had been completed and is waiting for the approval of the Railway Board. The estimate for the project is around Rs. 750 crore. If this line is expedited to be completed before Mahamaham festival slated for 2016, this will prove an alternative route to Chennai, Tirupati, and Bangalore.”

Dr. Maitreyan demanded doubling of the Thanjavur-Kumbakonam line, converting halt stations at Darasuram and Tirunageswaram, which are adjacent to Kumbakonam, into block stations (crossing stations), to enable better platform management at Kumbakonam railway station during the festival. Besides, he demanded improving infrastructure in Kumbakonam station, including construction of Yatrinivas.

The above associations while congratulating Dr. Maitreyan for taking up this issue have welcomed the announcement made by D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Railway Minister, that he would discuss on the laying of new railway line between Kumbakonam and Vriddhachalam with the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. The All Traders Association Kumbakonam at its meeting held recently celebrated the announcement of the Railway Minister by distributing sweets to its members and so on.

A.S.A.M. Adiyan Chettiar, its president, and V. Sathyanarayanan, its secretary, in a statement said the association had been pleading for this railway line for the past 15 years. The association urged the Railway Ministry to accord priority and complete this project before Mahamaham.

They thanked Dr. Maitreyan and R.K. Bharathimohan, MP, who spoke on this issue in the Lok Sabha and for drawing the attention of the Railway Minister.

They thanked the Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries Pon Radhakrishnan for drawing the attention of the Centre.

They urged the Centre and the State government to implement all demands put forth by the association on war-footing before the Mahamaham festival, in the interest of the large number of devotees visiting this temple town from across the world on the occasion.

Further 50 % of news in papers wants to enhance their sales by concealing actual facts to make the news sensational.

Also quality of Roads in cross connectivity of major places and further improvement are in the pipe line, and Omni buses offer a comfort far superior to Rly. and slightly below par from Air lines. Rly. badly needs some makeover to sustain in longer run for passenger service. Otherwise it would left out only for Freight/Cargo movement like in Russia or US in another 25 years.

VRI-JKM-KMU is public beneficial project unlike MQ-PKT or NG-TTP for few political personnel's aspiration. Demand started from late 90s and became more vocal during UPA-I and survey carried out during UPA-II. During UPA-I Mani Shankar as MP screwed this demand knowingly for different reasons.

beneficial or not does not matter any more.

As on today, there are 100s of projects lined up before the Railway ministry.

Even the money minting, Attipattu-Puttur line itself starved of due to other priority projects.

Peralam-Karaikkal got less allocation.

Financial sources for the existing projects are important and are in focus now.

Railways combined Electricity and Diesel Bill for current FY stands at INR 35000 Crore
Quote:
New Delhi: Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda in his budget speech on July 8 claimed that the fare revision – that came into effect on June 25 – would fetch the railways an additional income of Rs.8,000 crore. However, The bad news for the railways is that they are looking at a combined electricity and diesel bill for the financial year 2014-15 of a massive Rs.35,000 crore. And that, railway officials pointed out, was a full Rs.6,500 crore more than the Rs.28,000 crore power-and-diesel bills the railway ran up for the financial year that ended this March.

The bad news just gets worse. Thanks to the fact that electrification of various important routes not moving at the pace the railways required, it spends all this money on diesel, despite it hauling only 38% of the total passenger and goods traffic.

The railways’ Rs.28,500 crore bill for last year comprised electric bills of Rs.9,600 crore, while the diesel bill – despite hauling less traffic – stood at Rs18,900 crore. The estimate for the current year – Rs.35000 crores – is also heavily skewed in favour of diesel, with Rs.24,000 crore expected to be diesel bills.

The issue of the railways’ rising bills was highlighted by Member (Electrical) Railway Board, Kul Bhushan, during a conference of railway electrical and signalling engineers. “The hauling of traffic on electric traction is the cheapest available mode of transport in the country and Indian Railways is progressing steadily towards railway electrification on important and busy routes,” Bhushan told the gathering.

A city-based official, however, said that with diesel prices expected to go up further in the coming months, the calculations of the railways might take a beating even further. It is not as if the electricity bills are giving the railways any comfort, said officials.

In a press interaction earlier, WR general manager Hemant Kumar, while explaining the need for the June 25 fare hike, spoke of how rising power bills was hitting WR. “In the past 2 years, the power rates of both MSEB (Maharashtra State Electricity Board) and Tata Power had risen by 36% and 44% respectively. Currently, we pay the MSEB who supplies electricity to us at Rs.9.14 per unit, while Tata Power supplies at Rs.7.77 per unit,” Kumar told the press.

Making a mountain out of a mole hill

CLARIFICATION ON REPLACEMENT OF A SLEEPER COACH WITH AIRCONDITIONED COACH IN CERTAIN TRAINS

Reports have appeared in some sections of the media that Southern Railway plans to replace all second class sleeper coaches with AC coaches in a span of five years, attributing the source of such news to a statement made by the General Manager.

In this regard, it is clarified that only due to acute shortage of Second Sleeper coaches,Southern Railway has attached o*ne AC Three Tier coach in the place of a Second Sleeper coach in a few trains and o*ne Second Class Sitting coach in the place of a Second Sleeper Coach in a few other trains with effect from 27thJuly, 2014. This is a purely temporary measure which will end as soon as second class sleeper coaches are received.

I saw the emotional opinions about how "people have been cheated" etc. I can understand that if sleeper class is replaced by an AC 3 tier coach. How about sleeper class being replaced by 2nd Sitting coach? Are people being cheated there too?

First it was mentioned as AC Chair Car coach.
Also it was mentioned as Permanent replacement.
Navajeevan exp change was also came out in Gujarat daily.
Why SR didnt gave PR for this earlier?
Its a gimmick.
Also in Dinakaran they have mentioned that it was done as per Railway Board instruction by SR spokes person on interacting with media while clarifying this issue.
