Go-ahead for new south Glasgow 'super hospital'
:)

Final approval has been given for a £842m "super hospital" in Glasgow.

The Scottish government has approved the full business case for the new South Glasgow Hospital complex which will replace the Southern General.

A 1,109-bed adult hospital will sit next to a 256-bed children's hospital - providing maternity, paediatric and acute services on a single site.

Construction is due to be completed in January 2015 with the site becoming fully operational later that summer.

Public Health Minister Shona Robison said: "The new South Glasgow Hospital is Scotland's biggest ever hospital building project and will be entirely publicly funded.

"It's great news for people throughout the west of Scotland that this important project has been given the final go-ahead.

"Providing services for all ages on a single site will ensure patients can access the widest possible range of specialist services and will also bring with it increased efficiency, shorter waiting times and better continuity of care."

Labs on the way at New South Glasgow Hospital

Work on Glasgow's New South Glasgow Hospital has taken a significant step forward as building work on the new lab facility reaches full height. Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon took part in the 'topping out' ceremony at the site.

Covering approximately 25,000 square meters the new 'super' lab will serve the whole of the south of the city.

The lab is just one part of the £842 million publicly funded project which will see an integrated children's and adult hospital built on the site of the current Southern General.

With 1,109 beds, the adult hospital will sit alongside a 256 bed children's hospital, providing maternity, paediatric and acute services on a single site. The lab will link to the main hospital via a subterranean tunnel.

Ms Sturgeon said:

"The new Southern General is Scotland's biggest ever hospital building project and will be entirely publicly-funded.

"This major investment shows that despite the significant cuts to Scotland's capital budget the Scottish Government is continuing to prioritise spending on our NHS to improve patient care.

"The completion of the lab building is just the first step in this exciting journey for patients across the West of Scotland.

"Centralising services for all ages on a single site will ensure that everyone can access the widest possible range of specialist services and will also bring with it increased efficiency, shorter waiting times and better continuity of care."

yeah, its amazing to think that lab building will probably be smaller than the childrens hospital and certainly tiny in comparison with the monstrous general hospital.

There are already an impressive number of tower cranes on site just now and there are going to be loads more as this beast rises. Is it safe to say this will be the biggest development in Scotland over the next few years? Struggling to think of anything that comes close - New Forth Bridge maybe?

Mad isn't it? The lab is fucking vast too, 250,000 sq ft. Just the three carparks, Adult hospital and childrens hospital to go  Anyone want to take a guess at the max number of tower cranes on site at once?

Should be. Hospitals have a very high floor to ceiling height. Tower one at the Royal London Hospital is 97m with 18 floors. I would have thought this would be at least 60m.

Don't know about the carparks, Ahhhh. I'm just waiting for the adult hospital to start :eek2:

Couple of very tall tower cranes on site now and it looks like (at least) the first core of the main hospital is starting to rise: amazing how quick they can put those up. I've not driven right through the site for a while but I'll try to do so this weekend and get a more detailed impression.

Full steam ahead for massive hospital project

The £842m South Glasgow Hospital project, the largest NHS project to be undertaken in Scotland, is progressing on time and on budget.

It is now less than four years until the New South Glasgow Hospital Campus will be fully open for business. Glasgow's new £842million "super-hospital" is on track to be delivered on schedule and on budget, according to the man in charge of the mammoth project.

The project is scheduled for completion in February 2015 and will involve the creation of new adult and children's hospitals.

The New South Glasgow Hospital Campus will provide the ultimate "gold-standard" of healthcare, with acute adult, paediatric and maternity services located together for the first time in the city.

The children's hospital is expected to be operational first with the adult one slightly later because it involves the transfer of services from the Western Infirmary, the Southern General and the Victoria Infirmary.

Work on the two new hospitals, which is being carried out by Brookfield Construction, is already under way following the completion of a new £75m super-laboratory.

Yes. A core is where things like elevator shafts, stair wells, and service risers go. It also acts as a stiffener for the whole building, and prevents is being blown over in the wind. It has to go up the full height of the building. In the photo, you can see openings in it, which must be elevator openings, or doorways, at each floor.
