What I don't understand is they are already building the Farimont Hotel & Serviced Apartments, some homes, and a few 7 story apartment buildings. While they've taken out the roundabouts, and added traffic signals to both the perimeter and internal roads in the area (I absolutely love traffic signals in parking lots, don't you?), there is still only 1 way in and out of that area. Even now going there on the weekend is like National Day traffic. It'll be pretty bad once that hotel opens.

Are they also taking out parking spaces, or is the expansion going to be limited to the open area directly southwest of the mall?

Most probably the parking spaces will be demolished the entire parking and the southwest part will be a mall and as from the picture it seems that centerpoint will be inside the mall in future it will be a supermall and if not mistaken will be the second largest after Yas mall as still we dont know what the size of the expansion will be

Yes, the Marina mall Ikea closed once the Yas Island location opened. The Marks & Spencer moved into the majority of the old Ikea space. This happened a few years back...
It seems that the new traffic lights are carefully syncronised so that you have to spend 2 minutes waiting at each one if you go round the back side, there are about 5 sets of lights that change to red as you approach them. Going round the front (marina) side is better.

Finally...This mall needs a serious update and expansion.

Abu Dhabi’s Marina Mall to undergo Dh3 billion extension

bu Dhabi’s National Investment Company (NIC) has revealed plans to start work on a Dh3 billion project to expand Marina Mall, located at the south end of the capital’s Corniche.

NIC said that work will start on the extension in the first quarter of next year, and that the existing mall will also undergo a Dh300 million upgrade. The work is set to finish in 2019, which will be after the proposed opening dates for two new Abu Dhabi malls worth $1bn each – Al Maryah Central and Reem Mall.
