Chicago firm wins global competition to design first ‘positive energy” building in Abu Dhabi

Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) has won a global competition to design the Masdar Headquarters building in the emerging ecocity of Masdar, Abu Dhabi - the world’s first carbon neutral city. The building will be the first net positive energy building in Abu Dhabi, producing more energy than it uses. Smith and Gill, who formed a partnership in 2006 after years together at SOM, are no strangers when it comes to designing energy efficient towers. While at SOM the two collaborated on the design of the worlds first net zero energy tower in Guangzhou, China.

In line with Abu Dhabi’s 2030 development plan, Masdar is choosing to emphasize sustainability over height. In addition to being the first mixed use net energy project in the city, the new Masdar headquarters will be the lowest energy consumer per sq ft for a Class A office building in a desert climate. It will feature one of the world’s largest photovoltaic arrays, employ the largest solar thermal driven cooling and dehumidification system, and be the first building in history to generate power for its own construction.

Construction of Masdar City commenced in February 2008. The city will be constructed over seven phases and is due to be completed by 2016. Masdasr Headquarters is part of phase one and will be completed by the end of 2010.

Hosted by HRH the Duke of York, leading UK figures gather to discuss future energy needs.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of Abu Dhabi’s Masdar Initiative, today encouraged greater collaboration between the United Kingdom and Masdar to develop an affordable and sustainable energy future for the world during an address to UK government officials, business leaders and leading academics at a seminar on Masdar at Buckingham Palace.

Invited by HRH the Duke of York, Dr. Al Jaber was part of a high profile Masdar delegation, which included HE Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Executive Affairs Authority of Abu Dhabi, who discussed Abu Dhabi’s strategic economic growth and development plans.

Dr. Al Jaber underscored the growing importance of developing and deploying renewable energy solutions, and the way Masdar is working to make sustainable energy a reality.

“Today, governments and businesses worldwide are - facing a common problem of strain on natural resources and environment, Dr. Al Jaber told seminar attendees. “Energy security, climate change and sustainable development require engaging, aligning and collectively committing to investing in and shaping a better, and more secure future.”

“Through Masdar, we want to play a major role in developing solutions that answer present challenges – challenges which are made all the more important due to the limited time we have to solve them” he continued. “We are not simply a renewable energy initiative, our aspirations are far higher. We truly believe that we can make a difference.”

Recognizing the wealth of research and development potential in the United Kingdom, Dr Al Jaber also encouraged individuals and businesses in the UK to participate in the Zayed Future Energy Prize, which is currently accepting nominations and submissions from around the world.

His Royal Highness said: “Masdar provides an extraordinary opportunity for British businesses to become involved in one of the world’s most exciting future energy projects. It’s a real pleasure to be able to facilitate this seminar at Buckingham Palace. I hope it’ll provide a springboard from which the UK will be able to take advantage of the commercial and educational opportunities available.”

Also speaking at the event were RH John Hutton, MP Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform; Lord Browne, managing director of Riverstone Holdings; Lord Foster, chairman of Foster and Partners; Sir John Rose CEO Rolls Royce who all discussed the opportunities for UK companies to engage with Masdar and Abu Dhabi.

Following the seminar, H.E. Al Mubarak and Dr Al Jaber met with her Majesty the Queen and also met with members of the royal family in a private event at the Palace’s garden.

Later, Dr. Sultan met with Members of Parliament in Westminster Parliament. The seminar was an opportunity for UK Parliamentarians to hear how the Abu Dhabi Government had taken the bold step to establish the Masdar Initiative. During the seminar, Dr. Al Jaber discussed the current eco-town agenda in the UK and pledged to share insights from Masdar City.

Masdar is already working closely with a number of UK companies but is aiming to extend its ties in the country and across Europe.

Masdar City adopts carbon measurement system

Carbon footprint consultancy dcarbon8 has won the contract to ensure that Abu Dhabi’s multi-billion dollar sustainable development, Masdar City, succeeds in its quest for zero carbon emissions.

If Masdar City’s goal to become the world’s first zero-carbon city is to be achieved, it will be through the guidance of dcarbon8, who will be calculating and controlling the embodied carbon of the eco-city in Abu Dhabi.

“Our company will be measuring and monitoring Masdar City’s carbon emissions from the cradle to the grave”, said Matthew Fishwick, a consultant of London-based dcarbon8.

“This requires measuring all greenhouse gas emissions associated with manufacture, transportation and disposal of all building materials required for the city and onsite energy used to construct building.”

To measure the gas emissions, dcarbon8 will be using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology in accordance with dcarbon8’s own carbon footprint standard Planet Positive Protocol.

Developed in conjunction with Environmental Resource Management (ERM), Planet Positive has created a protocol to calculate, reduce and offset carbon emissions. KPMG has been employed as a third party means of assurance and an independent committee of academics and industry players review the protocol four times a year.

As no global standard on carbon emissions exist, Planet Positive is being adopted by companies to “measure, reduce and finally offset the remaining carbon footprint by at least 110%”, says Fishwick.

While dcarbon8 has worked with companies such as ProLogis, Development Securities and Sainsbury’s to measure and reduce their embodied carbon emissions, Masdar City is the largest project the company has tackled.

“Masdar took action on the largest conceivable scale and shows true leadership in rising to the challenge of climate change”, said Andrew Marris, the co-founder and CEO of dcarbon8. “We are very excited about the opportunity to work on such a groundbreaking development”.

I love how Abu Dhabi is taking great initiatives in such important developments. They've always been a cut above the others and should really be appreciated for their work.

Since no vehicles are allowed in Masdar City, how are the following situations handled:

How are heart attack victims transported from Masdar City to the hospital emergency room in Abu Dhabi?

If a fire occurs on the fourth floor of a building in Masdar City, how are professional firemen transported with their specialized equipment to the scene of the fire?

If a crime occurs in Masdar City, how do the police get to the scene of the crime, arrest the criminals, and transport the criminals to jail?

How are coins and paper currency delivered and picked up from bank branches in Masdar City?

How is solid waste (e.g. newspapers, waste paper, cardboard boxes, glass jars, cans, plastic bottles, and discarded food) transported from Masdar City to the landfill in Abu Dhabi?

How are fruit and vegetables delivered to the supermarket in Masdar City?

How do tradesmen transport their specialized equipment and parts to do maintenance and emergency repairs for Masdar City's utilities?
