Airport congestion ‘can only get worse’

26th January 2008, 10:00 WST

Further evidence of the need to upgrade Perth Airport’s congested terminals has emerged with latest figures showing passenger growth increased 13 per cent in the past six months from the same period last year.

The figures, which indicate there is no sign of domestic or international passenger growth subsiding, have sparked calls for urgent action to resolve unsatisfactory conditions.

Tourism WA chairwoman Kate Lamont described the situation at the airport as shambolic.

“It’s the first and last point of call for people and when they arrive at night and they can’t get a taxi, when it takes them a very long time to get through security and have to queue up it’s a serious issue,” she said.

“We just urge them to act with speed, because it is quite detrimental to the image of Western Australia.”

Tourism WA’s calls have been backed by Acting Premier Eric Ripper, who said the domestic facility was “woefully inadequate” and created a bad impression for visitors.

Latest passenger figures show international passenger growth was 16.7 per cent in the first half of the 2007-08 financial year compared with the same period the previous year while domestic passenger growth was 12.1 per cent.

Perth Airport chief executive Brad Geatches admitted that a strong economic outlook for the State meant passenger growth was likely to outperform other Australian major airports for the foreseeable future.

“Planning has been under way for some time now to examine options to expand Perth Airport’s terminal facilities,” he said.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the airport’s upgrade should be a top priority for Infrastructure Australia.

The new Federal Government body will co-ordinate major projects while identifying areas that need substantial upgrades.

The CCI nominated upgrades of Perth’s airport terminals and surrounding roads as the top infrastructure project for the State.

Yep my dad just did a trip to the Eastern States and commented on just how bad Perth airport is. The plane parked so far from the terminal. They had to walk the whole length of the domestic terminal on top of it. 4 flights came in at the same time a (only 4) and the whole domestic terminal was a scene of complete chaos.

How could they let it get this bad? It's disgusting.

Everytime I go there it's about to implode.

Ive been working on the Qantas domestic upgrade for weeks. I am impressed with how it's running at the moment compared to my past experiences. Ive found that people from Perth in the current boom have unreasonable expectations as to what can be achieved in a certain amount of time.

Once the Qantas intermediate baggage extension is complete the Qantas terminal should quiet down.

Then soon after that the T4 terminal should begin at the international.

The tarmac walk is even better when it's raining.

Yeah, I don't mind a tarmac walk to the back door of a Virgrin Blue a/c - the novelty of being air-side and walking around the plane is kinda cool - even after you've done it many times. Helps to like planes though

I think its a virgin blue thing, because I boarded on the tarmac in sydney, when there were lots of free skybridges around, maybe its quicker turnaround

Often I think they use both. Front rows board through the bridge and rear rows board by walking out over the tarmac.
