Does anyone know why there are no direct flights between Perth and China? This is something which has been bugging me for a long time. Has there been no lobbying by Westralia Airports Corp or the WA Governmemnt for this? Surely with things as they are at the moment such a route would not only be viable, but also even more of a boon to investment??

Interesting you ask that - we have just been talking about the same thing on the Christchurch International Thread about a CHC - Beijing link.

Come over and give us your thoughts on a direct CHC - Perth link... I think we are long over due on this one.

Good question. Perth currently has 8 weekly services with Hong Kong (5 from Cathay and 3 from Qantas). Qantas recently finally replaced the 767s on the route with the newer A330s that have the much improved business class cabins (and economy cabins for that matter).

In terms of direct flights with the mainland, there's only two possibilities here - Qantas or a Chinese carrier. China Southern and China Eastern currently serve Australia (Guangzhou and Shanghai respectively), but I couldn't possibly comment on the likelihood of their serving Perth any time soon. I think most Chinese airlines have a very large public perception problem to solve first.

It's possible that Qantas might service a direct link in the future (maybe 3 times a week). The biggest problem Qantas have at the moment is a lack of suitable aircraft. However, once the A380 starts arriving and begins to free up other aircraft in the Qantas fleet and once the 787 commences delivery, we may see some interesting new routes from Perth.

Of course, given Qantas' previous track record I would be surprised to see them give up their Sydney-centric focus any time soon.

China Southern actually has a flying school operating out of Jandakot and Merredin. So it's not like Perth isn't on their radar so to speak.

Yeah of all the airlines China Southern would , I think, be the most likely to sevice Perth. I certainly don't have any optimism for Qantas. They have too much of a liking for codesharing on too many routes and even tried to downgrade the Perth - Tokyo service a while back. No, they are not the answer here.

And while we're on the topic. Here's some more routes which I think Perth should have:

Perth - Mumbai/Bombay ( I know Air India have been in an out of the Perth market over the years but it makes sense now)
Perth Seol/Incheon
Perth - Saigon/HCMC
And yeah Perth - Christchurch could also work. Maybe if it was an addition to the exiting Auckland service.

there are two others i think Perth should have also

Perth-London (Once Qantas, BA & Virgin Atlantic receive there 787s it would be suitable)
Perth-Shanghai (this would likely be operated by Air China or China Eastern)

I forgot, Perth - Taipei is also entirely doable but never mooted...why?

I also personally dream of Qatar Air coming one day but I know that won't be soon. It would make my journey back much faster. Either that or the German government finally relents and lets Emirates fly to Berlin as requested.

"Thank you for taking the time to register your enquiry via Perth Airport’s website

Westralia Airports Corporation thanks you for your interest in Perth Airport

In response to your enquiry, please be advised that planning is currently underway to determine the feasibility of an expanded and consolidated terminal facility in the international precinct. Much of this planning centres around the operational implications of concentrating the majority of Perth Airport’s aeronautical operations in the one area. Investment in major new infrastructure will also have an impact on the aeronautical charging regime which exists between Perth Airport and its major airline partners. These matters are currently being discussed with the airlines and will influence future plans for consolidating the terminals at Perth Airport.

A major airport redevelopment will take between 5 to 7 years to deliver. In the meantime there are bottlenecks in existing infrastructure which Perth Airport has already started to address. A series of upgrades are being delivered in the domestic precinct which will substantially improve the customer experience. Perth Airport expects these improvements to be completed within the next 18 to 24 months. The works program includes:

Additional check-in and departure lounge space at Terminal 3 (Virgin Blue, Skywest, Alliance, Ozjet and Tiger domestic services)
More long term car parking, supported by a modern and efficient park and ride bus service to the domestic terminal which will operate on a 24 hour baisis
A new road network which will increase the efficiency of traffic flow around the domestic terminals and improve pedestrian safett
Relocation of car rental pick-up and drop-off to a more convenient location adjacent to Terminal 3.
Creating an internal link between Terminals 2 and 3.

In addition to these works, Qantas has initiated a major upgrade to Terminal 2 which is owned and operated by Qantas. Qantas’ $50 million program includes:

More security screening points in a new dedicated location
Additional baggage reclaim facilities
An increase in the overall floor area of the departures level
A larger and improved Qantas Club and Chairman’s Lounge
Additional aerobridges to enable direct terminal access to aircraft.

The Qantas upgrades are being delivered over the next two years. Perth Airport is working closely with Qantas to improve the quality of the customer journey both inside and outside the terminal buildings.

I hope you find this information useful"

Awesome! I can't wait for this new development, even if it is years away.

Anyways, I heard something about Etihad looking at Perth! Hopefully this isn't a rumour.

Airlines that should fly to Perth

I'd love if if these airlines started routes out of Perth:

Air India // Perth - Mumbai (B777-200)
China Southern // Perth - Guangzhou or Perth - Beijing (A330-200)
Japan Airlines // Perth - Narita (B777-200)
Air New Zealand // Perth - Christchurch (B767-300 or B777-200 after they upgrade the service to Auckland)
Vietnam Airlines // Perth - Ho Chi Minh (B777-200)
Etihad (I heard a rumor they might!) // Perth - Abu Dhabi (B777-300)
Korean Air // Perth - Seoul (B777-200)
Lion Air // Perth - Jakarta (B737-900ER)
China Airlines // Perth - Taipei (A330-300)
Virgin Atlantic // Perth - London (A380 or 787)
Qantas // Perth - Bangkok (A330-300/ 787)
Qantas // Perth - Beijing (A330-300/ 787)
Qantas // Perth - Kuala Lumpur (A330-300/ 787)
Qantas // Perth - London (A380/ 787)
Jetstar // Perth - Phuket (A330-200/ 787)
Jetstar // Perth - Nadi - Honolulu (A330-200/ 787)

I'm proberbly dreaming on most of them though.

I'd love to see PR here, but not with an A320. A direct service with a 330 would be better.

QF to Cape Town would be great. They could still codeshare with SA to Jo'burg but have a link to South Africa from Perth.
