Excellent. I'd never heard of Bob Morris, certainly was a great achiever and want to learn more. Thanks for insight and great pics as usual.

Robert Morris was a crook. He owned slaves and financed slavery. He also funded a war AGAINST England. Robert Morris was a bad man. I am not proud of him, even if England is.

You've surprised me a lot, Jane, with your pleasant-looking James Street Station images: lots of people, cars running nearby, and a very interesting Indian restaurant with a pink exterior. Hmmm, does the Landmark concoct delicious Indian dishes?
Plus, the former insurance building that housed the birthplace of Rob Morris looks fascinating and grand, with the vaulted ceiling (oh look, I love that stained glass sculpture) and arched staircases... must be a real treat to visit, but sadly, not all people liked his character though. I prefer to stay neutral on that because I totally don't know what positive and negative traits he contributed to the American society... And the Central Library images look interesting: the most intriguing would be that Latin book with a drawing of a kind and the obligatory large first letter that starts a chapter of that reading (I wonder what the book's title is).As for the people shots, I notice a lot of them making some sort of a fashion statement... even those youngsters really look hip! Plus, I can see quite a lot of pedestrians looking fashionable heading out from James Street, making me wonder if any fashion shows take place in Liverpool, especially that London hosts them a lot... Superb photos again, Jane! Truly love the city even though it may be gloomy... stay warm!

This is not to excuse the abomination of slavery, but to give Robert Morris some historical context perhaps. Recently, in Britain, we saw a quasi-state funeral for a former Prime Minister who sharply divided the nation: to some a country -saving heroine, to others a person who destroyed communities and lives for the sake of ideology. I'm sure she'll get many a plaque, probably a bank note at some point, and certainly a commemorative statue. |

Morris was not driven by loyalty for England or by pro/anti American independence. He was driven by profit maximization. He funded war and made families fatherless, as to avoid paying English taxes. He kept slaves and attempted to make money from the slave trade. Sure, other people did too. We could use that argument to justify all evil. He was English and at war AGAINST England. He was a greedy, fickle and evil man. So were others. So that makes it okay? Your argument does not stand. |

I had never heard of Rob Morris before this. From the little research I have just done, it does seem he played a very big part in the American war of independence. I find it confusing as to why Liverpool would put up a plaque of someone, who, at best, could be called a traitor?
Perhaps there will one day be a Margaret Thatcher statue outside the national coal mining museum? In my opinion that plaque is a joke. |

Historical facts like birthplace are neither good nor bad but just history. Do not confuse the word Commemorate with celebrate as although it can mean this, it can also as in this case mark an occasion or site such as a birthplace. That plaque is there because it is a fact that he was born there and played an important part in the birth of the modern USA, and because this fact may be of interest to tourists, especially from the USA. How many innocent Catholics died at the hands of Cromwell, how many innocent Muslims died during the crusades? Should we wipe out any historical connections of people like Cromwell and Richard I (the Lion heart()? Remove all of the statues and plaques ? Some facts about some celebrated historical figures whom I am pretty sure placing a plaque to indicate their birthplace would not be questioned - #Winston Churchill was a racist alcoholic as well as the leader of Britain in WW2 and it is widely claimed that he allowed or facilitated through his decisions as lord of the admiralty in WW1 for the Lusitania to be sunk (losing nearly 1200 lives), therefore ensuring the US entered the conflict. George Washington was a slave owner and Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus, which allowed him to arrest thousands of U.S. citizens (including plenty of journalists) and hold them without cause or trial. When a U.S. Circuit Court overturned Lincoln on this, he simply ignored their ruling. These are just a few quick facts and pages could be written about these figures alone and their dodgy pasts. The fact is, most important people in history have questionable episodes in their lives but that does not take away the fact that they have an important place in it. This plaque does not seek to celebrate the man, merely indicate that this is where he was born.

Thanks for all the contributions, but I am going to request they be removed. This is not the place for extended debate, nor slurs against whole populations - it is a photographic thread. Thanks.

Back to the pictures...
Thanks FOD, Student4Life, Skymantle & Dane for your comments. I made my third visit in as many days to Central Library today, and came across a team of Parkour Runners, called Swift Media, who I have photographed previously. A great bunch of young men, who are not only committed, but suffer for their art too. ( multiple broken bones and other injuries). A sunshiny afternoon: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
