The Hypocritical Silverstein

I was reading an article about the topping out of the new 7 WTC in the subway yesterday morning and I was about to go freakin' nuts after I read these lines...

Quote:
"Give it a little bit of time," Silverstein said. "We'll fill it up. Sooner or later every building gets filled in New York. It's an amazing thing, there are no vacant buildings around. ... We'll fill this one."
So why the hell is he building short and according to market demand if the major argument of building tall is that people won't want to work there? Why is planning to build the other towers according to market demand if sooner or later each building will be filled up?

I know he's out to make a big profit before he goes, but c'mon this guy actually had the balls to say such a quote.

What a nut.

The whole rebuilding process is full of contradictions:

-Silverstein wants to replace the Twin Towers with an iconic symbol, but the building can't draw too much attention.

-Bloomberg wants short buildings and housing at the WTC site, but his West Side redevelopment project proposes buildings taller than the FT.

-Urban renewal-types hated the Twin Towers because (they said) of their impact on the local enviornment, but don't complain that the Lib Plan has worse wind conditions, worse Floor Area Ratios, and less public space than the old buildings.

-Daniel Libeskind was selected to inject radical architecture into the new WTC, but the only intact element that "he" designed is a site plan nearly identical to the one that the massive corporate Beyer Blinder Belle firm produced (and the public rejected).

I could go on and on...

i don't think hypocritical is the word. i think flip-flopping fits better.

the only reason silverstein, as well as pataki, childs, and libeskind, are flooding out all of this b.s. is because they know in their hearts that if they express the truth about what they really are planning to do to ground zero, they will get sacked and driven out of nyc by hordes of angry people.

they managed to shush their critics by claiming that they'll build a better wtc than what the twins have to offer. but in reality all they have is low-quality ideas for the site. everything's so conventional, so banal, so average. all they can use is smoke and mirrors to make their ideas more interesting. but at least at the end, the freedom tower and its fellow buildings in the new wtc complex (except new 7) will become laughingstocks of nyc architecture.

seriously, this rebuilding is the biggest joke nyc's ever seen. it shows what can happen when hardcore conservative politicians jack the rights of the people and use their power for their own means. they rather go with their crap proposals than something that's a lot better for the good of the people.

I'm speechless. And Silverstein's already saying that the $2.4 billion he lost in the previous insurance trial is legitimately his. Equally horrific are the urban-renewal types Itzkelah mentioned, as we all know.

Everyone DOES realize that the more money Silverstein gets, the faster the site gets built...Right?

^Yes, but we don't want what they're planning to build there. The Freedom Tower is a bad idea, articulated in bad architecture. We want them to fail.

That's untrue. Silverstein has said he will build based on market demand and that he would follow a plan where he just builds the retail bases with the towers rising above them.

It's not like if he had all the money right now he'd build all 4 other surrounding towers all at once anyway.
