So are all the flyover in Kolkata are painted blue? I saw that at many places...looks quite nice and striking.
Is Kolkata geographically contained like Mumbai? Or does it have unlimited land for expansion? Usually that is the reason for having or not having highrises...
Yes. All of them. Not only flyovers but other utilities like road medians, boulevards, parks, some govt buildings as well. The fav color of our CM

Well, not exactly like the nature of Mumbai, but scarcity of land to a considerable extent is definitely there. Hence we are seeing a massive spurt in highrise construction, more specifically in the residential sector.
Land for expansion is there towards the North & East of the city at present & it is expanding likewise in the form of new townships & satellite areas. But, one has to take into account the fact that about 100 kms from the city to the East lies the Bangladesh border & about 50-60 kms towards the South lies The Bay of Bengal. So the present East & Southwards expansion will eventually end. Towards the west lies the Hooghly river & the twin city of Howrah.
Presently, the Core City area (KMC area) covers 202 sq kms, while Greater Kolkata Metro area (KMDA area) covers around 1,750 sq kms. Given the third largest urban population (14.2 million), the city gives you the impression of bursting at its seams. With the present pace of expansion it might get contained like Mumbai in the near future as well.
