These happen because all the projects are held if the bribery amount is not agreed. No court intervention would help as none cares right from the politician to the babu to the labourer because of the pathetic government work culture. All of the projects in Bengal are subjected to realization of huge bribes at many levels and it sometimes seen that the bribe is 50% of the project cost. Hence such tussles happen, companies move court, projects are half done and abandoned and babus go for publishing new tenders and again the renegotiation happens. ....Right from contract labours to purchase of raw material needs to go via syndicate at their own cost which is generally high and low quality and hence projects do not happen in Bengal. And it wont happen, take my word. Bengal is yet to understand that the world has changed. These arm twisting tactics won't bring biggies to the city. Rather they give a shit to our city. Shame on our government and they will again rule for another 5 years and I fear what would become of the city after that.

I agree with you, left govt was slow , but Didis TMC has been the most corrupt and pathetic govt. Won't go much into politics as none is better, but its such a sad feeling to see the old capital of India, Kolkata crumbling down. Infrastructure was much much better in 1980's , what it is now. Sadly no one is trying to feel it that if there is no blood in viens you cannot survive, sameway if tram tracks are not restored it will Die a slow and a painful death.

E-buses, not tram, coming to Walled City

OFFTOPIC: Didi govt has a match, an equivalent incumbent corrupt govt of Aam Admi Party, which has all the money to increase the pay of its MLA's to 400% but not for tram cars

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...oming-to-Walled-City/articleshow/49279341.cms

NEW DELHI: The grand plan to have trams ply in Chandni Chowk as part of its redevelopment has been put on hold. The government realized that the project will not be financially viable and has proposed replacing of the trams with battery-operated buses.

"The project is under review. In the last meeting of the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation, concerns were raised about the expense over trams and we are now also considering specially designed battery buses. A final decision will be taken soon," said deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia. Sources said the DPR submitted by DMRC proposed that the tram would ply beside the shops and would be a two-way track operating in a circular fashion from Red Fort to New Delhi railway station via Jama Masjid, Digamber Jain Mandir, Sheeshganj Gurdwara and Old Delhi railway station. This would cost as much as Rs 800 crore. There would be additional expenditure on operation and maintenance. Now, 100-odd battery operated buses would come instead for as little as Rs 20-30 crore and help in decongestion without causing pollution.

Work to shift wires underground along the main Chandni Chowk road had been held up with the decision on the tram pending. "Earlier, we planned to run the tram on both sides of the road. The plan was later revised to one side. Consequently, overhead wires and cables were shifted into a duct on one side, but the other side remained dug up because if the tram was to operate from that side, the wires could not be shifted. That work will finally take off and bring relief to commuters," said a source.

Delhi Metro had raised concerns about the tram route and Intach, too, was against the proposal, saying that it would alter the original character of the area. It would be a setback for them as Walled City was a prominent part of the world heritage dossier submitted to Unesco. Sisodia had surveyed the area in August and asked PWD to carry out work of shifting utilities with the presumption that the tram would definitely operate. The Chandni Chowk redevelopment plan, under SRDC, was handed over to PWD from the corporation in 2013. Work was started to pedestrianize the stretch between Fatehpuri Masjid and Red Fort and shift all cables underground.

Just a day after the Paroma Island flyover was shut down temporarily, re- introduced tram services of the Tollygunge-Kalighat-Ballygunge route faced hurdles on Sunday.

The tram service on the Tollygunge-Kalighat-Ballygunge route was re-launched on Sunday after eight long years. Around 6.45am, when the third tram service reached Ballygunge, it derailed. The road remained blocked for several hours; however, since it was a Sunday, there were few people out on the roads.

Several other trams remained in a long queue behind the derailed tram. Sources in the Calcutta Tramways Corporation (CTC) say that before re-introduction of the service, old trams were not tested and trial runs were not conducted. However, authorities maintain that trail runs were carried out but the tram had certain faults as a result of which it derailed.

In the year 2005, underground work on sewage pipes by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation began. Two years after, tram services on the Tollygunge-Kalighat-Ballygunge route were suspended. Sources add that the CTC lost several lakhs after the tram services remained suspended on this route. In order to gift Durga puja revellers, CTC decided to re-introduce the service during this time.

Trams getting new lease of life

Kolkata
14 Oct 2015
Colonial-era charm of trams is being revisited in the city with air-conditioned tram cars being lined up and closed routes being restored. "We are getting a good response for our recent initiatives. During peak season we are getting full bookings for our AC tram car. Seeing the demand we have decided to add an AC vehicle to the fleet every year beginning from this year," Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) managing director Nilanjan Sandilya said.

The first AC tram was launched in 2013 and since then the authorities have not only started heritage tours but also allowed tour operators and even party-goers to book the single-bogie car. "The second AC vehicle, built at the Nonapukur tram depot at a cost of about Rs 20 lakh, will feature better interiors and new technology," the official said.

Trams are popular for birthday parties, school and NGO events and in a rare case a marriage was also solemnised in the street car.

A quintessential part of colonial-era Kolkata, the only place in India which still manages to accommodate the slow-moving vehicle in fast-moving cities, trams have also been a part of thriller films like 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' and Vidya Balan's 'Kahaani'.

The footfall in the cafe-museum at the Esplanade depot is also encouraging and officials are thinking of have more such stationery cafe-museums at other places in the city.

Reopening of closed tram routes is also on top of the mind of the authorities. They have recently restored two routes which were cut off since the last few years due to civic work.

Tourists booking AC trams often complain that due to the closed doors they miss the morning sounds of the city. "Therefore, we have kept two non-AC heritage trams available for block booking by tour operators," Sandilya said.

Preferred for being an environmentally-friendly form of urban transport, trams number about 270 out of which 200 are in working condition. (PTI)

CTC to introduce two more AC trams before Diwali

Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) will press into service two air-conditioned trams, that are specially designed to hold parties and seminars, before Diwali.
The trams have installed within a microphone system, a small pantry space and a large television screen. Many multinational companies want to launch their products by hiring trams and are also interested in holding seminars inside them, a senior CTC official said. The two AC trams have been designed in such a way so that seminars and workshops can be held inside the tram, the official added.
Doors of the trams will close automatically when the tram starts plying. The trams have wide glass windows along with FM radio. Tea and snacks can be prepared in the pantry inside the tram and served on board. There are 26 seats on each coach of the trams.
Renovation of the two AC trams started six months ago and now it is nearing completion at Nonapukur tram workshop. Around Rs.16 lakh was spent to renovate each tram.
The CTC runs two AC trams that were introduced two years ago.
One AC tram plies from Esplanade to Khidderpore thrice a week.
The decision to renovate two more trams was taken in view of the popularity of two existing AC trams among passengers.
The CTC is planning to ply one of the trams from Esplanade to Ballygunge, while the other is slated to run between Esplanade and Shyambazar.

CTC misses Puja gains

Calcutta Tramways has received a setback after it failed to resume tram services in its Ballygunge to Tollygunge route before the Puja.
Though the route, closed since 2008, could have been reopened by early October, thus shoring up its revenues in the festive season, Calcutta Tramways Company could not resume services following stiff resistance by puja organisers and auto rickshaw operators.
The route, a 3.5 km tram track, had been closed for seven long years due to sewer renovation carried out by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The work was completed two months ago and CTC wanted to resume the service early this month, a senior CTC official said. But the move was opposed by various big puja organisers located along the tram route and auto rickshaw operators owing allegiance to Trinamul Congress. The city police also resisted the move, reasoning that resumption of tram services along the route at such a time would aggravate traffic chaos during the Puja, the official said.
In the face of the barrage of opposition, the tramways has no choice but to wait for the festive season to end. It has decided to reopen the closed tram route after Diwali, when the festive season comes to an end. The CTC could have earned handsome revenues had the police given its nod to plying of trams along the route from early this months, a senior CTC official said. The tram route was very popular among passengers.
Tram services on the Ballygunge to Tollygunge via Kalighat route were suspended in 2008. Sources say that the CTC lost revenues worth several lakhs of rupees after the tram services were suspended on this route. Now a few hundred auto rickshaw operators are doing brisk business due to absence of tram services on the route.
The route was supposed to resume in 2010. But CTC official could not resume the route as the KMC failed to complete the sewer work in time.
Another closed tram route, from Tollygunge to BBD Bag Rs one of the longest tram routes Rs will resume service after Puja. The route was suspended for the last three months due to concretisation process carried out by the CTC. Earlier the CTC entrusted the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioner (HRBC) to take up concretisation of the route. In the middle of the work the CTC suspended the contract on account of poor performance by HRBC. The CTC is now carrying out repair work on a portion of road that caved in front of St Thomas School along the route as well.
Currently, trams are plying on 25 routes. After the services will resume the two routes, total tram routes will go up to 27.

Tram routes spared E-W Metro axe

KOLKATA: The tram network, the city's oldest automotive transit system that has shrunk substantially over the last few years, may have contracted further had not there been a concerted effort to save it while preparing a study for the East-West Metro project.

According to sources, large parcels of land were required at Dal housie and Chowringhee for Ma hakaran and Esplanade stations respectively . Going by the linear route, the project would have eaten into a large chunk of land in pos session of the Calcutta Tram Company (CTC). Had that been the case tram routes on Lenin Sarani, Kidderpore Road and BB Ganguly Street would have been abolished for at least next four years.

But RITES did a detailed study on the tram track so that no service gets disrupted during Metro construction. Since East-West Metro would need land at Curzon Park where CTC has a large parking and route channelizing facility , RITES found some shifting and realigning of tram tracks will save it from complete disuse.

While the northern part of Curzon Park will be used for the underground Esplanade station of EastWest Metro, tramlines will be realigned to the southern part. Similarly, once the Metro's northern part work is complete, the tram tracks will be shifted. There will be a lot of tram track relaying at the Curzon Park.

But the problem was acute at Dalhousie square. Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation, the implementing agency , insisted on doing away with tram tracks at Dalhousie for quick construction of the Metro station on the eastern side of Lal Dighi. However, RITES and Kolkata Police, along with CTC, fought hard for keeping tram operations alive at Dalhousie, said a transport department official.

RITES proposed that KMRC first work at the site of Dalhousie minibus stand so that trams can ply along the project site. Once the Metro work at the stand is complete, the tracks can be shifted on the east.

RITES has also proposed a loop in front of Bidhan Market so that Esplanade-bound trams from Kidderpore and Kalighat can take a Uturn to go back to Kiddepore depot.RITES has proposed Rs 20 crore as the estimated project cost for such realignment of tram tracks at these two spots.

"Closure of tram tracks along these routes would have been disastrous. These are not only very popular but generate maximum revenue," said CTC managing director Nilanjan Shandilya.

Kolkata's vintage trams vying for a place in UN heritage list

It might have fallen on bad days, but that cannot dampen the spirit of the centuries' old Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) and its zest to recover its pristine glory. The company, which now plies trams on merely 56 km of tracks in select stretches of the city, is trying to acquire the UNESCO's World Heritage tag. Kolkata is now the only Indian city to have trams

If its wish is granted, the label will allow the CTC to run tram services much more smoothly and help the government to promote 'heritage tram journeys' to foreign as well as domestic tourists.

The CTC is reeling under a crushing burden of mounting losses with little scope to boost its earnings in a significant way.
