Kolkata's airport is currently being upgraded in light of the booming air traffic in the Indian aviation. The modernization and expansion of the NSCB airport will be done by May 2011 and this will include the construction of a new terminal, extension of the second runway, taxiways amongst others.

Designed by RMJM, the new terminal will be able to handle 20 million passengers/annum which would be sufficient till 2015. Work has started on it and the terminal should open by May 2011.

The new terminal building will have an area of around 180,000 sq metres. 104 check-in counters, 44 immigration counters, 25 security gates, five conveyor belts and 15 aerobridges will be the other features of the airport post development.

Deep piling work for the integrated passenger terminal had begun in Nov 2008

The consultants for the modernization of this airport is a consortium of Indian firms partnering with Hong Kong’s RMJM and a Paris-based firm ADPI.

Work on nine domestic bays, three cargo bays and 11 additional parking bays has already started

Inside the new terminal:

^ The terminals landscaping and design revolves around an abstract reference to the writing of Rabindranath Tagore of Bengal. The graphic nature of his writing is visible as large scale patterns etched on to the underside of the main roof as well as landscaped across the forecourt ground.

Singapore Airlines Cargo adds 2 new destinations

MANILA, Philippines – Singapore Airlines Cargo has added two destinations to its Asian network using Boeing 747 freighters.

The airline resumed Boeing 747-400 freighter operations to Kolkata in India after a two-year hiatus, and started serving a new destination, Penang in Malaysia.

The new freighter capacity will complement the ‘bellyhold’ space available from Singapore Airlines’ daily passenger services between Singapore and Kolkata. (EHL)

Hi SSCIans Pics from my flight back from India will be uploaded soon. I have been meaning to upload them for the last few weeks but have been very busy since arriving back in the US. The pics might not be very clear it was an exceptionally rainy day. But I managed a good few shots of the "connecting" building and the terminal. Also the pics are a few weeks old so the real progress might be substantially different.
