Kolkata's airport is currently being upgraded in light of the booming air traffic in the Indian aviation. The modernization and expansion of the NSCB airport will be done by May 2011 and this will include the construction of a new terminal, extension of the second runway, taxiways amongst others.

Designed by RMJM, the new terminal will be able to handle 20 million passengers/annum which would be sufficient till 2015. Work has started on it and the terminal should open by May 2011.

The new terminal building will have an area of around 180,000 sq metres. 104 check-in counters, 44 immigration counters, 25 security gates, five conveyor belts and 15 aerobridges will be the other features of the airport post development.

Deep piling work for the integrated passenger terminal had begun in Nov 2008

The consultants for the modernization of this airport is a consortium of Indian firms partnering with Hong Kong’s RMJM and a Paris-based firm ADPI.

Work on nine domestic bays, three cargo bays and 11 additional parking bays has already started

Inside the new terminal:

^ The terminals landscaping and design revolves around an abstract reference to the writing of Rabindranath Tagore of Bengal. The graphic nature of his writing is visible as large scale patterns etched on to the underside of the main roof as well as landscaped across the forecourt ground.

5. The services building is to the right of the international terminal. It is a huge building too.

6. Construction is going on the "gap" between the new terminal and the current domestic terminal. Other forumers have already posted photos of that section.

7. There will be two levels of underground parking

8. Inside the international section (airside). This is where the gates are. Not sure what the upper floor is. Noticed that the frameworks for the gates is done in this section also.

9. This is what the passengers will see when they enter the terminal from the cityside. The granite flooring is currently covered for protection. Notice the roof.

10. In the previous picture notice the two levels. The escalators take you down another level. Not sure if that will be the baggage claim area of the link to the underground parking

Its almost completed. some interior finishing and finalization of installation of aerobridges is going on. It should be up and running by September this year

Rumors are that Dragon Air is going to start operations from the city with 4 weekly or daily flights to HK, Etihad is going to start operations soon, BA might make a comeback, the national low cost carriers Indigo and Spice Jet will be starting operation with flights to South East Asia (mostly Bangkok and Dhaka) but nothing is concrete as of now.

As far as I know, Dragon Air is a sister airline of Cathay Pacific. That means, tourists from Chennai/Madras going to China en route to HK will benefit from the flights. :)

Dragon Air connects HK to 19 cities in the Chinese mainland... :)

That new terminal is really urgently needed. I used CCU for the first time about a month ago and it is certainly the worst 10+ million/pax airport I have ever used anywhere in the world.
The old terminal is completely run-down and hopelessly overcrowded.

. yeah that cowshed is very soon going to be replaced by one of the most beautiful terminals in the country (Mumbai will be the best IMHO once its done). visit next year and take some more incredible photos of the terminal and India

its a gem of a terminal. when I said beautiful I just meant the architecture and the art work thats gonna go inside the terminal. Operationally and aesthetically New Delhi is great too.

#44 ·
Dragon Air most likely to touch down in October when the operation from new terminal commences. They will fly daily and use an A320 with 8 business class seats.
