I was talking about the woeful exhibitions both temporary and permanent.

But as you've mentioned it, the building is vain, difficult to navigate, leaky, wasteful of space and was designed without regard for its original function.

It's logo architecture. Post-modern, jokey anti-functionalism. It's not very good.

Just read in the Wembley regeneration thread in the London forums that a World Football Museum will be opening with Wembley Stadium.

Will this affect the credibility of the NFM in any way? Or will it be naff and is just a cheap ploy by the owners to make a quick quid or two?

London means jack shit in the football world, although Wembley is of course the needle in the haystack here.

Manchester being a Jerusalem for football fans, the NFM is kind of like the Al-Aqsa Mosque or Holy Sepulchre

That apart from Wembley, London doesn't contribute half as much to footballing as Manchester does.

In fact, it'd have made much more sense to locate the main football stadium in the UK in Manchester than in London

Your right,in fact when the competition for the national stadium took place Manchester won,but you know how they wangle things to favour contrived outcomes.

Wrong...

The English Conurbation Cup table (European and Domestic only) would currently look a bit like this

(1pt per trophy won, only extant teams counted)

London.....69 (note 1)

Liverpool..... 56 (note 2)

Manchester.... 55 (note 3)

NOTES
1) Includes Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham, QPR, Wimbledon, and Charlton
2) Includes Liverpool, Everton, and Tranmere
3) Includes City, United, Oldham, Rochdale, Bolton, Bury and Stockport
Best,
Slip

Add Wigan to Manchester tally and youve got another two Football League Cup winners.

Back of the net: National Football Museum smashes targets for visitors

26 Apr 2013 14:39

More than 350,000 punters have already clicked through the turnstile at the Urbis-based attraction since it opened last July.

National Football Museum bosses say they feel vindicated after it smashed its annual visitor target in the space of nine months.

More than 350,000 punters have already clicked through the turnstile at the Urbis-based attraction since it opened last July.

That is more than three times as many as visited the museum in its former home of Preston, which it controversially vacated to come to Manchester.

Kevin Moore, director at the attraction, hailed the news.

He said: “We feel totally vindicated. I was in Preston where we were delighted to get 100,000 visitors a year for a city of that size.

“We knew that we needed to take it to a bigger population area. We did a lot of research and asked people what they wanted and I think that it’s paid off.”

The target was set by museum trustees, who consulted industry experts.

And Kevin now wants to build on that figure.

“We want to get to half a million,” he said. “Our biggest day last August saw 3,500 visitors but just last Saturday we had more than 3,000.”

Officials from the museum are now expected to commission a report to find out how much money it is bringing into Manchester’s economy.

“In Preston we were talking millions so that should give some indication,” said Kevin.

“Out of the 350,000 around 20 per cent come from overseas.

“You are talking about people who go to restaurants, spend money in shops and who stay in hotels.”

Visitors have jetted in from across the globe.

“We have large groups of United and Liverpool fans from Scandinavia,” said Kevin.

“But there have been people here from China, Japan – it’s like the United Nations.”

Kevin, a Tranmere Rovers fan, added that despite the figures there is room for improvement.

“There are two areas where the figures aren’t what we want them to be,” he added.

“The shop has not done as well as we would have liked and I think that reflects the general retail picture. While things might be a couple of quid cheaper online fans should know that the money they spend here will go back to the museum.

“There has also not been as much sponsorship as we would have liked which is something we are working on.”

Kevin also revealed his favourite memory from the last nine months.

“I had a friend whose dad, in his 80s, is a big Blackburn fan. We were in the café after they had been around and he sang me the 1938 Blackburn song. That was wonderful.”
