They know this area has history, but there probably aren't any records of this site.

They will have records from more recent development such as Bullring, which would have given them some data and an ability to guesstimate what you may expect to find on this site.

It depends what type of works they are required to do for arceaology (you would usually submit a Scheme of Investigation to be agreed by the Council) but if it is a few trenches you are looking at 15K with the analysis and reports required at the end of it. Not insignificant, i'm sure we would all love an extra 15k in our accounts, but pretty minor in the grand schemes of things.

Indeed, there's a section in the Museum and Art Gallery dedicated to bits and pieces found when the BullRing was being redeveloped.

Specialist asbestos removal contractors were seen on the site some weeks ago, I assume that it's now safe for full demolition, a dividing wall has been knocked down first probably to give more room on a small constrained site, it seems that there is no access from Well Lane.
