As a teenager The Contact's building was striking and drew me in and I loved the place. As this is a theatre aimed at young people it did its job, and I'm pretty sure still does, pretty damn well. So it may not be your taste, but it fits the brief perfectly so has to be good architecture. Hope after the refurb it's even better at doing that.

One of the best buildings in Manchester in my opinion. Cost virtually no money, achives great outcomes and has created a genuine landmark on an unpromising plot set well back from the road. Furthermore the turrets are not mere architectural flourish but part of a natural ventilation system. Sustainable, innovative and striking. What's not to love?

The design beat 32 others from across the world when it was put out to RIBA competition. Here is what the judges said:
Quote:
The RIBA prize judges said, "This is a brick built Gaudi come to Manchester. What was previously understated and uninspiring has been transformed into an elaborate and engaging monument with a strong independent image, perversely a highly appropriate response to its context. It is all done with complete conviction and it is now certainly highly visible in the street scene. The project has a strong environmental agenda made manifest in the strong root forms of the natural ventilation system: these combine with a zinc 'curtain' at the entrance to create a highly theatrical effect, with references to Gaudi and the castles of southern Germany, in some way architecture as stage set. The theatre has an uplifting atmosphere and this is unquestionably an exciting and eccentric addition to the Manchester scene."
And this is what the company's old premises looked like:

Verdict? We need more architecture as good as the Contact.

Incidentally, these grand old town houses are what used to be in place where the (surface car park of the) Contact Theatre and Academy are now...

Unsentimentally listed in 1959 as "clearance zone 3"

Again on the right

As posted in the retail thread AMC will be rebranded as Odeon Great Northern from tomorrow. Tickets seem to be extremely cheap, only £5 adult. Let's hope they stay that way.

Vue is currently £4.99 everyday and £3.99 on Mondays so I can see why Odeon have had to do the same or they'd never compete. Especially as the Printworks cinema fixtures and fittings are way more modern and inviting than the outdated Great Northern

Hopefully Odeon Great Northern will receive a hefty refurb soon in order to bring it up to the same level.

Given most of the fixtures and fittings in the paintworks were left over from its days as a UCI (Odeon barely did anything bar sticker-over the signs and paint a few walls really) and the new Odeon/ex-AMC is, according to Obubru, loss-making with only 3 years left on its lease, I'd be surprised if it gets a makeover at-all. Like The Trafford Centre, AMC was old-fashioned even when new

To be fair, thefilmworks was at most about 6 years old at that point (opened in 2000 as far as I can tell, and re-branded to ODEON in 2006). So there probably wasn't much of a need to do anything much more than a lick of paint at the point of takeover.

Since then, the Gallery bar and lounge has been redone at least once, and the IMAX screen has had new seats (not sure about the other screens under ODEON).

The developers of the Great Northern have made public their intention to demolish the whole GN extension. If the cinema does only have 3 years left on the lease, I can't see why they'd spend anything on it other than the rebrand.

Has anyone heard anything re. the hard rock casino unit in the print works? It's a massive unit which as far as I remember, closed down around a decade ago and it's been empty since? If the Great Northern finally gives up as an entertainment destination, maybe the print works will expand into it again?

Bowling was rumoured years ago but nothing came of it. That unit suffers from the poor design of not having an entrance inside the Printworks and instead having on a corner with little footfall. I would love to see inside that unit as I guess it was never fully stripped out.

Appreciate that it may distruptive, but I wonder if you could add access through the current ground floor entrance to Vue.

There seems to be loads of empty space on the ground and first floor of the cinema, and it wouldn't change it too much if it was rationalised a bit and it could allow for an access route to be created.

Although Vue may have some decent plans to use the space they have, so that may not be an option.

I can imagine as it stands the passing footfall that goes past the entrance would be poor; may change with all the NOMA works and potentially the whole street could be livened up? If not, an entrance through Vue would make a lot of sense to me and extend the Printworks further. Maybe subdivide the casino unit and have a walkway running through the middle of it like the existing?

Doesn't look like they have done much other than cover up the walls which I imagine were covered in shrapnel marks with some boarding with all the branding one and boxed in the McDonalds. I assumed with it being closed for so long this would have had a lot of work done to change the look and layout and maybe make it into a useful space with food options, a permanent merchandise location and a well built security area but it looks like they just quickly added some cheap cladding to the walls and fixed any cracks in the floor if any existed. I doubt from the size of the bomb it did much if any damage to the actual building and the arena had mainly been closed out of respect rather than because of works being carried out.

Do people not realise it's possible to be compassionate without the use of hashtags any more?

And what on earth is 'welcome arena rnb'?
