I like to think of MKE as an under-rated, under-utilized jewel that just needs some polishing. I just hope that process (single security checkpoint, new international arrivals facility, new concessions setup) hasn't been compromised with the drama in the executive offices.

Does anyone have any insight about the DHL 734 flight that has been running from Winnipeg-Milwaukee-Cincinnati at night and then the flight does Cincinnati-Milwaukee-Winnipeg the next morning. Cargojet used to run the 752 on this same pattern, but does anyone know what kind of cargo is being moved for this flight? Is this mostly for Amazon?

There is a subscriber only MBJ article that emphasizes our need to get a new Airport Director in right away and to keep momentum going on these projects. MKE's importance for the regional economy cannot be understated. Without a strong airport it will be difficult to convince larger companies to move here and will be a consideration for our existing local companies when it comes to expansion/relocation.

A key challenge is that the MKE job pays significantly less than most medium hub and even many small-hub airports. These salaries are points of public record so they can be found by poking around. Grand Rapids -- an airport roughly 1/3 the size of MKE -- has a director salary between $190-$225, which is more than Milwaukee's scale.

Airport director is usually a job where an airport the size of Milwaukee hires someone who held a similar position at a smaller-but-not-insignificant airport. The pay is a notable stumbling block.

As much as we liked having the exceptional access on this forum Izzy gave us it is a little...well...let's just say unconventional and not without risk. And I don't think we can say our recent rash of new nonstop cities would not have happened with a different director. But I think the Business Journal is right that it's not good to have the position empty for long periods and we don't want to lose momentum on projects and improvements, something airport administration is more actively involved in than air service decision influence. Hopefully they find someone qualified and willing pretty quickly.

Wow!! That is pretty pathetic. If you want to be the best you have to hire the best, and if you want to hire the best, you have to pay the best. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out. So this to me, shows just how little importance the county of MKE places on Mitchell. Why don't they realize that a busy, thriving, airport is a HUGE economic generator for not only the entire region but the entire state?? SMH

I guess the county is content with a slightly below average airport (per the JD Power survey rankings mentioned above).

I think it's because (here we go again) it's county run, not city run. An independent airport authority would be best. For the life of me I can't understand why there isn't one.

Because this is Wisconsin, and at all levels people here like to talk out of both sides of their mouths when it comes to local control. They want it when they benefit their positions, and don't want it when it doesn't. It's why we don't have a RTA, it's why the airport stays under the county's control. Republicans wouldn't give the airport its own authority because they don't want to create another governmental body independent of its control in the Milwaukee area. Democrats don't want it because doing so would weaken Milwaukee County by taking away one of its few remaining functions.

In my perfect world the state would administer state services and stay out of everything else. Milwaukee and Milwaukee county would merge and the overlap in police services etc would be eliminated, there would be an RTA that actually had the funding to build workable transit lines and the airport would be independent of the politics of everything and would be run without interference from politicians, state and local. But the world isn't perfect.
