On the Metrolink Extension thread, someone posted that trial digging was taking place in order to locate the foundations of the church. That might account for the fencing. Two points come to mind. Couldn't they use one of those devices that they had on 'Time Team' that records anomalies below the surface? Or don't they work through paving? And if they are digging holes, what happens if they break through into the sealed crypt? It could be like that scene from the Indiana Jones film...minus the snakes!

Been thinking about this recently, and I think I'm confident that MCC can deliver a pretty decent public realm here. If we think about the city's other public realms which have been delivered since the Piccadilly Gardens monstrosity - we see that MCC appeared to have learnt a lesson!

Great Northern Square. Decent public space, plenty of trees, a pretty cool amphitheatre and now at the centre a mini masterplan involving this area becoming a nightlife district;

Spinningfields Square. Very striking, and increasing in visitor numbers due to the John Rylands Library. To be honest I find the whole Spinningfields scheme very impressive

For instance, Hardman Square; (these are old pictures now because the square is being re done)

Manchester Central Square/ "Windmill" Square. Again, lots of visitors and (in my opinion) a very high quality square. Pretty much every time Manchester is on TV this square is featured; and it reeks of 'Modern Manchester' - with the modern Convention Centre, the Beetham Tower, Great Northern Apartments and the odd new tram rolling by.

So after that spam, I can come to the conclusion that I'm very positive of what MCC can deliver here. I think it's going to be good
