lion air recruits ex PT.DI workers

Quote:
Low-cost carrier Lion Air’s intention to handle its own maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) work of its 750 aircraft has opened employment opportunities for people with aircraft engineering expertise.

Currently, 30 percent of the employees at Lion Air’s heavy maintenance division are former state-run aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PT DI) workers.

Lion Air heavy maintenance manager Ronny Roozanno told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday that around 30 percent of the 200 skilled workers in the heavy maintenance division were former PT DI employees. They were recruited due to their expertise in aircraft engineering and train less experienced staff.

He said the completion of Lion Air’s first MRO facility in Batam in June would open more employment opportunities. At least 1,200 workers will be needed to fill various positions in the division. An additional 3,000 workers will be needed once the second MRO facility, located on 12 hectares of land, is completed in 2016, he added.

“We have started recruiting workers for the MRO facility in Batam and Lion Air representatives have visited vocational schools in several areas. We have given the information in particular to second grade students,” said Ronny.

He said the MRO was also in the process of obtaining certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency. "So, it will be at a same level as the Garuda maintenance facility,” he added. (ebf)

Lion Air passenger plane crashes into sea off coast of Bali

Quote:
PANICKED passengers aboard a commercial jet which crashed into the sea off Bali say they were given no warning before the craft plummeted into the water.

Authorities advised no Australians were aboard the Lion Air plane, which slid into the sea outside Denpasar International Airport as it came into land about 6pm yesterday.

The Boeing 737 - carrying 101 passengers and seven crew - was on a domestic flight from Bandung in West Java.

'Extraordinary phenomenon hit Lion Air jet'
AFP April 16, 2013

A TORRENTIAL downpour engulfed the Lion Air plane that crashed in Bali at the weekend, a passenger said, describing how the sudden rain storm made the sky look "as if it was night".

"The final approach was fine," French businessman Jean Grandy, 49, told AFP, adding that the descent was smooth.

"It did not even accelerate, there were just a few metres left to reach the runway.

"Then suddenly, a cloud enveloped us. Torrents of water were pouring on us, it was an enormous downpour. It only lasted two, three minutes.

"It was almost as if it was night, even though the sun had been shining just before."

His testimony backs up the idea put forward by some analysts that the crash was caused by freak weather, as opposed to pilot error or a problem with the new Boeing 737-800 jet.

The Frenchman owns a factory that makes shoes and had been travelling from the city of Bandung on Java island to Bali, where he lives. Grandy said that the plane turned as one of the engines stopped working, before hitting the water. He was sitting just by the part of the plane that cracked open, he said, and helped a boy out of the jet before making several trips back to help others until rescuers arrived.

"The crew were exceptional. They took charge and only left once everyone else was out of the plane," he said.

"There is no objective reason to think that another plane would have done any better. It was an extraordinary phenomenon - torrents of water pouring down."

And the accident had not put him off using Lion Air - he plans to take a flight on the budget carrier from Bali to Jakarta on Wednesday.

Malindo Air will also operate ATR aircrafts that was supposed to be operated by Wings Air?

KUALA LUMPUR: Malindo Air, Malaysia's first hybrid airline, could start flying from the Subang Skypark Terminal using ATR turboprop aircraft in June.

However, this hinges on it securing an air operator certificate from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), sources said.

They said the airline is expected to obtain the DCA approval as early as next month.

Business Times understands that Malindo Air will receive the first two of six ATR aircraft from its major shareholder, Indonesia's Lion Air, by June.

The aircraft will be used to serve new domestic routes and Indonesian destinations.

Lion Air had placed an order for 27 ATR 72-600s in February last year for its unit, Wings Air. The delivery of the aircraft will be completed in 2015.

Sources said Malindo Air is now setting up its office at Skypark Terminal as it believes the DCA approval is imminent.

"Malindo Air should start their turboprop operations at Skypark Terminal by early June," said one source.

Another source said Malindo Air will operate its hybrid and turboprop operations separately.

Thus, it has no intention of shifting its current base at the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang, at least until klia2 is ready
.

"They are planning to operate separate turboprop services from Subang, like Firefly," he added.

As at press time, calls and text messages to Malindo Air chief executive officer Chandran Ramamuthy were unanswered.

Malindo Air is 51 per cent-owned by the National Aerospace and Defence Industries Sdn Bhd and 49 per cent by Lion Air.

The airline started its maiden flights last month from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang.

It offers four daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kuching and three daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu using two Boeing 737-900ER.

Lion Air to launch Thai Subsidiary

Quote:
The plan by Lion Air, Indonesia's largest low-cost carrier, to join Thailand's hotly contested airline market is coming to fruition, six years after it was mooted.

The Jakarta-based airline is setting up a subsidiary airline, Thai Lion Air, and has already started recruiting pilots, cabin attendants and ground staff.

Thai Lion Air intends to start its operation strongly with the deployment of up to six single-aisle twin-jet Boeing 737-800s and by using Bangkok's Don Mueang airport as its base, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

Woradej Harnprasert, director-general of the Civil Aviation Department, yesterday confirmed Lion Air is launching a Thai subsidiary, although the department has not yet received an application for air operator's certificate.

The creation of Thai Lion Air comes in the form of joint venture with Thai entities, which are required by law to have a minimum 51% holding.

However, the identities of the entities remain a mystery.

SUBANG JAYA: Malaysia's first hybrid airline, Malindo Air, will receive five Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from its parent, Indonesia's PT Lion Group, in 2015.

Malindo chief executive officer Chandran Ramamuthy said the airline will deploy the aircraft on six-hour routes, such as to the Middle East, North India, North Asia and Australia, from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

He also said the airline is considering flying the B787 Dreamliner to North China from Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

"We requested for five B787 aircraft. Initially, we may get three while the other two will be given to Batik Air," he said after the launch of its ticketing office at Skypark Subang Terminal yesterday.

Malindo has planned to expand its network in three phases that include domestic routes, five-hour radius routes and medium-haul routes, which have a radius range of about eight to nine hours.

Chandran said under the first phase, the airline will will fly all of its Peninsular Malaysia routes from the Subang airport. He added that Malindo will step into the second phase in the second half of the year.

"We need to have the domestic footprint first. Our aircraft is focusing between Sabah and Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, whereas our ATR (turboprop operation) will focus on the shorter routes, which are the one-hour flights from Subang to Penang, Kota Baru, Johor Baru, Alor Star and Langkawi," he said.

On its current performance, Chandran said the demand is going strong and it has carried about 125,000 passengers since May 22.

Malindo's jet operations achieved a 70 per cent load factor in its first month of operations.

Air Asia Indonesia Closes Jakarta-Semarang Route Effective July 1

Quote:
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Audrey Progastama Petriny, Air Asia Indonesia Communication Manager said the policy of closing Jakarta-Semarang route was the company's strategy to maximize the utilization of the planes.

She rejected an opinion saying that the route was not profitable. "Not really, we took this decision since there were changes in our strategy," Audrey said, adding that the load factor for Jakarta-Semarang route reached 70 percent. "However, the company decided to close Jakarta-Semarang route as Air Asia plans to add flight frequencies in other routes," she continued.

Air Asia Indonesia operates two flights for Jakarta-Semarang route, with flight numbers QZ 7564 and QZ 7568. The airline offers three options for passengers who have booked tickets for that particular route. The first is that passengers have to reschedule and fly before July 1. No administrative fee will be applied for the rescheduling. The second is to change their tickets to another destination, which is the same value, within 180 days. Lastly, passengers can cancel the reservation and get a refund.

This closing is effective July 1.
