Cagayan resumes campaign vs Air Force

CAGAYAN can only hope that the long layoff will not disrupt its ruthless form.
The Lady Rising Suns return from a two-week hiatus today when they battle Air Force in the quarterfinals of the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Unbeaten in seven matches in the elimination round, the Rising Suns hope to come out stronger with most of their players fresh off a big international experience with their participation in the Asian Championship.

Cagayan, Smart begin V-League title series
Quote:
Manila, Philippines – Though she showed up and helped make things happen for Smart-Maynilad in its do-or-die game against Army last Sunday, Din-Din Santiago remains a doubtful starter when the Net Spikers open their best-of-three series with the unbeaten Cagayan Province Rising Suns for the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference crown today at The Arena in San Juan City.

“We’re not sure if she can play in the finals,” said Smart-Maynilad coach Roger Gorayeb after the Net Spikers, with Santiago banging away 19 hits, including three blocks, outlasted the Army Women in five to clinch the other finals berth Sunday.

Rising Suns seek Shakey's V-League crown, history
Quote:
MANILA, Philippines - In the doorstep of history, Cagayan Province sets out for its most important match in the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference, seeking the most important win in pursuit of a never-before-heard feat in the country’s premier women’s volley league.

“We have a chance to write history on Sunday (today) so we might as well go for it,” said Cagayan coach Nes Pamilar in Filipino after the Rising Suns turned back the stubborn Smart-Maynilad Net Spikers, 26-24, 25-11, 23-25, 11-25, 15-12, in last Tuesday’s opener of their best-of-three title playoff at The Arena in San Juan.

The recently concluded professional volleyball league, Shakey’s V-League Season 10 Open Conference, has Thai imports.

Thai Soraya is the season's MVP and is popular among Pinoy volleyball fans.

The Champion...

Members of the Cagayan Rising Suns celebrate their title romp.
Quote:
He was all praises to his Thai players Phomla Soraya and Kannika Thipachot, who complemented well with the local aces, particularly Angeli Tabaquero and Aiza Maizo, voted as two of the 10 most talented and popular players in the league’s first 10 years.

The 21-year-old Soraya, the league’s Best Setter and Finals MVP, kept the team together with her excellent, well thought-out sets while the 17-year-old Thipachot, the league’s Best Scorer, provided not just the firepower but also the leadership and endgame spunk.

Thai ace Kanniapka Thipachot led Cagayan with 24 points, including a spike that put the Lady Suns a championship point, 14-5.

PH gets Group A, opens bid vs. Mongolia in Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship, Manila
Quote:

Delegates from the various embassies representing the participating nations attended the draw to determine Asia’s entry to the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Club World Championships in Betim, Brazil later this year. The Asian tilt will be held on Philippine soil for the first time since its inception in 1999 and having the biggest turnout is something that Filipinos should be proud of, according to Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Executive Vice President Shanrit Wongprasert.

“This is history being made,” Wongprasert shared during an interview following the draw. “The Philippines should be proud of this as (it is) slowly coming back as being known for volleyball in Asia.”

Richard Gomez vies for spot in national volleyball team
Quote:
Richard Gomez is both an actor and an athlete and apparently, he is “determined” to flex more of his sports muscles by vying to be part of the Philippine volleyball team.

Gomez, whose interest in the sport started in high school, is among close to 30 players that have been invited for the tryouts currently being held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

2 Aussies reinforcemen’s ‘volley’ team
Quote:
A boodle fight welcomed the two Australian players reinforcing the Philippine team late Monday and national coach Francis Vicente immediately liked what he saw in their first practice that bodes well for the country’s chances when it hosts the 2014 PLDT HOME Fibr Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship presented by PLDT Home Fibr on April 8-16.

“They quickly jelled with the boys. Their first practice with the national pool was so smooth,” Vicente described his newest recruits in Aussie players Cedric Legrand and William Robert Lewis.
