Palembang: the heart of Srivijaya [Part 8]

PALEMBANG
THE HEART OF SRIVIJAYA
I Part 1 I Part 2 I Part 3 I Part 4 I Part 5 I Part 6 I Part 7 I

Most travelers don't bother visiting Palembang because it's off the Trans-Sumatra Highway; they just take the boat direct from Jakarta to Padang or bypass it on the bus. But if you do make the side trip to Palembang, coming in by train, you'll notice the many rubber and coffee plantations and factories. This area is also known for its oil wells and forest products. The main market and oil-export center of South Sumatra Province, located on both sides of the Musi River 80 km upstream from the sea, Palembang, with 700,000 people, is Sumatra's second most populous city. For over 1,300 years, the basis of Palembang's economy has been river and ocean commerce. Nearly one-third of total Indonesian government revenue comes from this oil province alone. Pertamina has donated to the city a large sports stadium, TV station, town clock, and a handsome minaret for its mosque.

As is typical of an outlying provincial capital, this staunchly Islamic city has its own dances, songs, customs, and cuisines. Much of the city is built on piles over tidal mudflats; the weather could get very sticky and hot. The Musi River divides the city into two sections: the southern half, Ulu, where the majority of the population lives, and the northern half, Ilir, which houses most of the hotels, shops, government offices, and well-to-do residential areas. The symbol of Palembang is the Ampera Bridge, built in the 1960s; you see paintings of it everywhere.

An excursion up- or downriver by speedboat or ferry is mandatory before the city's ammonia factories destroy the Musi. Rent one of the many watergoing contraptions from in front of the benteng for. Be cautious with the piratical boatmen down on the Musi; you hear stories of people being taken out in the middle of the river and pressured for more money. Always go with a friend.

History

By tradition an ancient Oriental trading center, from the 9th until the 13th century Palembang was one of the world's principal ports. The city was born on pepper, raised on tin, and grew rich on oil. Palembang was once the capital of the Sriwijaya Empire, which scholars have called 'Phoenicia of the East.' The first tangible signs in the whole archipelago of the arrival of Mahayana Buddhism appeared in Kedukan Bukit near Palembang in the early 600s. A full 100 years later traces of this religion showed up in inscriptions of Candi Kalasan in Central Java.

On his way to India in 671, a Chinese Buddhist pilgrim, I Tsing, arrived at the university in Palembang and stayed four years, writing his memoirs and handing down a valuable account of the city. He described a huge marketplace where Tamil, Persian, Arabic, Cambodian, Siamese, Chinese, and Burmese were all spoken. A thousand ships lay at anchor, and Sriwijaya sent its mercenaries as far away as Mesopotamia to do battle. Thousands of monks learned Buddhist teachings and translated Sanskrit texts here.

The city reached its zenith in the beginning of the 11th century. Then in A.D. 1025 it was brutally attacked by a jealous Chola king from South India; the place never recovered. By the end of the 14th century, Sriwijaya had splintered into eight smaller princedoms, the largest of which, Melayu, was centered at Jambi and became a strong maritime power. Finally, with the rise of Melaka in the 15th century, Sriwijaya became a remote backwater. On 17 June 1983, Palembang celebrated its 1,300th birthday.

Sriwijaya's origins have lately been disputed. Some researchers claim the empire originated near Chaiya, Thailand, and not in the Palembang area. One reason for this theory is that, except for the artifacts in the city's museums, little physical evidence remains of Palembang's past splendor. People in the region around Palembang, however, still weave fine fabrics and perform unique Hindu-influenced dances. South Sumatran dancers wear elaborate tree-like headdresses with glittering pendants and festoons or crowns, and carry gold-gilt fans. Wedding costumes are still patterned after the royal courts of the old medieval empire, with a flap on the groom's headdress preventing him from looking at the bride.

Sights

The Mesjid Raya (Grand Mosque) near the bridge greets you as you come into the city; it was built by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin in the 18th century. Go for a ride along the road heading upstream beside the Musi River--whole residential areas are built out over the water, featuring some superb examples of traditional architecture. During the rainy season this broad river becomes a lake; the residences built on rafts rise and fall with the water. Palembang's old benteng (fort), with its tall whitewashed walls, is on Jl. Benteng just back from the river in the center of the city. It was built in 1780 during the reign of Sultan Ahmad Najamudin II. The benteng is now occupied by the army, so permission to enter must be acquired from the fort commander.

The area in front of the benteng and to the sides of the Ampera Bridge is one of Palembang's unique attractions. Here ships of 10,000 tons lie amidst small, bobbing rowboats and sailboats, as motorized prahu dart back and forth across the river. Houseboats are moored along the riverbank, functioning not only as dwellings but as floating warung. It was this river life that gave Palembang its prewar nickname, 'The Venice of the Far East.' Today the scene is reminiscent of Hong Kong, but with a more third world flavor.

Palembang's famous 'floating markets' are in the Pasar Ilir 16 area, two km downstream from the bridge. This crowded quarter consists of two km of the scariest, dirtiest markets anywhere, selling anything and everything. Immaculately dressed women shop in the disgusting meat and fish area--the smell is unbearable, there are flies everywhere, sellers wash their cutting boards in the sewer. Just like the klongs of Bangkok, boats going to market must travel down these canals. Locals will tell you to be careful walking in this area, which is frequented by 'gangsters.'

Museum Negeri Sum-Sel

This museum is located about five km from downtown, about 300 meters off the road to Jambi and the airport on Jl. Sriwijaya--take a Km 5 oplet. See this traditional Palembang house (Rumah Bari), a solid wooden building made of kayu tembesu. The Dutch moved it from the countryside piece by piece in 1931. Megalithic sculpture is displayed as well.

Chinese Temples

Klenteng Kwa Sam Yo, between the river and Jl. Sungai Lapangan Hatal, is remarkable for its hundreds of fascinating murals and wall paintings depicting the story of the great Kublai Khan and other Mongolian heroes. Ask to see the vicious-looking self-torture chair, a means for attaining spiritual knowledge through pain and suffering. Another pain-inflicting activity was the immersion of the penitent's hands in boiling oil; ask to see the color photos of the old Chinese whose unscarred hands were so honored.

Another old Chinese temple is on Pulau Kemarau downriver at the junction of the Musi, Komering, and Ogan rivers. Hire a motorized sampan in front of the Benteng for the 15-minute ride. This temple is also a kramat (holy place) to Muslims. Sites like this sacred to both religions are known as 'double sanctuaries'; the only others in Indonesia are Klenteng Ancol in Jakarta and Gedung Batu in Semarang.

Culture

Events

Palembang's traditional wedding ritual dates back to the Sriwijaya era. Weddings and receptions are usually held on Sunday mornings. The busiest wedding season is the time of the haj, when many Sumatrans embark on a pilgrimage to Mecca. Tradition dictates that the bride must propose to the husband and pay him a dowry commensurate with his social and economic stature in the community. This arrangement gives her added clout in the marriage as she figuratively 'pays for him.' On Java, weddings often take place in the mosque but here the custom is that engagement parties and weddings are held at the bride's home. In the wedding egg-breaking ceremony, the groom crushes an egg beneath his bare foot, which the bride then cleanses; this is supposed to symbolize fertility. Finally, with all the pomp of a sultan's court, the bride and groom sit in state on a white-satin couch blanketed in flowers, fanned by young handmaidens.

The anniversary of the founding of Palembang is commemorated every 17 June. The occasion is celebrated with sports events, community projects, and performances of music and dance on an open-air stage. Jalur (canoe) races are held at noon a day or two after the Independence Day celebrations on 17 August. The jalur, in the shape of an animal, are manned by up to 40 rowers. This event is very popular among Palembang's citizens.

Arts And Crafts

Influenced by centuries of foreign trade, the weavers of South Sumatra have been deeply affected by diverse cultures. Palembang's traditional kain songket, symbols of a family's wealth, are usually made of silk, then given an overlaid design of gold or silver; buy one in Pasar Ilir 16. Also, the tourist office can suggest a few weaving centers to visit. Go in the mornings; weavers tend to take the afternoons off. In Rumah Bari, see the small diorama of weavers, traditional textiles, some spinning wheels, and an exhibit of the whole nine-phase process.

Palembang's plangi cloth is unbelievably involved and colorful. Plangi comes from the word pelangi, meaning 'rainbow.' Traditional Palembang plangi is rarely made now; even old pieces are quite difficult to find. These cloths are now only seen at weddings, draped around the bride's shoulders after the cleansing ceremony. Ask a family to retrieve some of their old plangi and take them out into the sunlight.

During the colonial times, Palembang used several arms.

These arms were adopted on December 29, 1925. The arms showed the Dutch National arms on the right side, and a divided left half, with a staff of Mercury and a local river boat. The Dutch arms indicated that the city was an important city in the Dutch East Indies and symbolised the ties with the Netherlands. The staff of mercury was the symbol of trade. The small boat a symbol for the local economy. The arms above are shown with the normal crown for cities at the time, but the city also used a mural crown.

When these arms were send to the government for official registration, the Dutch Court of Arms (Hooge Raad van Adel) rejected the proposal. The use of the national arms was strongly discouraged and a mural crown not acceptable. A mural crownt was only allowed for towns that used to have city walls and have been under siege. The court came with a new design, showing a divided shield with the staff of mercury and the boat. As supporters the two lions.

On July 20, 1931 the city adopted the design, but at the same time launched a contest for (better) supporters. Finally two bears were chosen as supporters and the motto Semper renascor ( I am continuously reborn) was added. These arms are shown below.

In 1932 a new proposal was discussed by the local council. It showed a quartered shield, with in the first quarter an imperial crown; in the second the staff; in the third a local warship and in the fourth a three-topped mountain. The supporters and motoo remained, but again a mural crown was used.

The imperial crown stood for the medieval Sriwijaya (Cri Wijaya) kingdom, of which Palembang was the capital. The warship indicated that the kingdom was the strongest naval power at the time (6th-11th century AD). The staff remained as a symbol of trade. The golden mountain in the fourth quarter is a canting symbol for the Sailendra dynasty (the name means Mountain Lords), originating from Java, but intermarried with the rulers of Palembang.

The local council again wanted the mural crown, as the city has had walls and was under siege in 1596 when the Sultan of Banten sieged the city.

These arms were never approved and thus never used.

2010, Mobil Dinas Pakai BBG

(sindo)

Maju Terus Palembangku!!!!!

Tawarkan Diri Gelar SEA Games
Friday, 08 May 2009

(mg43)

Kiwalk Gantikan Manajemen Kiff Park
Thursday, 07 May 2009

PALEMBANG(SI) – Kiff Park (taman Kota Palembang) resmi berganti manajemen pekan lalu dan keberadaan nya diganti menjadi Kiwalk paling lambat Agustus 2009.

PALEMBANG(SI) – Kiff Park (taman Kota Palembang) resmi berganti manajemen pekan lalu dan keberadaan nya diganti menjadi Kiwalk paling lambat Agustus 2009.
