You know, I did make this giant update, but google chrome crashed on me and decided to not save any of the information I entered. Fml. Heres your update everyone..

Downtown LA Update 5-17-13

Welcome everyone, welcome! I've returned from my venture through the city of angels and I can say the city was immensely vibrant this Friday night. My guest noticed that the 7th street metro station was overflowing with people. He was shocked at how many people actually rode pubic transit in our city. Heh. That's LA. Here's your update everyone, sit by, and enjoy the ongoing progress of the city of angels.

Wilshire Grand Demolition

It's simply just a stump in the middle of a forest. It'll soon be a forgotten memory replaced with a massive tower. I'm anticipating the day the steel rises. We should see the tower making progress by years end.

8th and Hope

For the first time, I was kicked out of the Macy's parking structure. Apparently I need a permit to be taking photos at the top of the structure. I tried to explain this was for a newspaper(lol), but he didn't bite and demanded permits and papers. I love SSP, but I'm not going to go through all the trouble. I did manage to grab one shot before he whistled at me to back off. I took a risk guys XD

8th and Grand

Not much progress. Hoping to see the cranes rising soon enough. I want that sea of cranes!

9th and Olive

Slowly, the steel rises!

Courtyard Marriott

My favorite project continues to rise. It's made a ton of progress since I've last seen it. Can't wait for the sister to rise next to her

The Broad & Parcel Tower

While I was on grand, I've noticed there was a bit of a "Dead" zone between Subway and the Disney Concert Hall. I'm sure that will change once the Museum and the Parcel tower is completed. Not to mention the Subway station stop.

Jia Apartment Tower

It's coming together!!

Misc

Anyone have a clue what they are doing here?

There you go guys! Hope you enjoyed the update

When people say they are wary of Manhattanization,
it means they don't want Manhattanization in their lives.

I've driven through Manhattan before .. it's sterile.

There's too much geography bathed in great weather
for us to settle for the usual Manhattanization sought
by lesser cities. Let them have that smell.

Our sunny culture is far removed from that indoor town.

What a stupid comment. If you think New York is an indoor "town" then its obvious you've never been there.

Who is this Archaean clown? A quick view of your other posts makes it apparent that you are a troll. Take your bullshit comments back to the cave you crawled out of!

It is an "indoor" town compared to Los Angeles. But it's still wonderful.

The Downtown News released another Development Update in yesterday's issue. Apparently, the double Marriott will be topping in late June June.

Some other tidbits:

Barry Shy's 40 story building at 6th/Main is still working on it's geological report for the city. He's hired an architect to draw up a design, so we should be treated to renderings soon. Still shooting for a 2013 groundbreaking.

Sares-Regis Little Tokyo and 2nd and San Pedro is expected to break ground in June.

Here's something very interesting that I almost missed: Joseph Hellen/Downtown Management are re-considering their plans for the Spring Street Garage (in between the Alexandria and the Spring Street Arcade). Instead of a 12 story parking structure/apartments to match the street wall of the existing buildings, they're considering a 20+ story building.

This is probably the first time I can recall hearing about a developer wanting to increase the scale of a project in downtown, rather than downscaling.

Do you happen to know which architect/firm he hired?

No clue. I was simply paraphrasing from the Downtown News article, which didn't list an architectural firm.

This was the design for a more ambitious project Shy proposed for the same site five or six years ago.

Perhaps we can expect something similar to the design seen here?

The first floor will need to encompass more retail to rejuvenate street life in that area. Placing 5-floors of parking may be fine, but hopefully it won't cover the majority of the first floor area at street-level. Based on the rendering, I'm not sure how this is going to pan out...

However, I do like the five skybridges between the buildings. It sort of encapsulates the true feeling of a vertical city, especially if those bridges connect tenants to primary and secondary uses...

^As I stated, that's a rendering for an older proposal for the site from 2007. Shy is only proposing one 40 story tower for the site now. No skybridges, although hopefully the ground level is activated with retail. Supposedly he didn't want to include any in the project, but the downtown design guide dictates that any building on a corner lot must have ground floor retail/restaurant space.

Perhaps 8th & Grand will get multiple cranes due to the size of the lot?

Yep, I thought so too. I'd imagine at least 2. I expect 3. It's a big building, and that will ultimately link the 9th and Olive crane to the 8th and Hope crane, giving us that sea of cranes I missed so dearly.

I also read that Shy was just going to add parking for the first five floors, with no mention of retail. Well, thank goodness for Downtown Design Guidelines...
