All squares in Downtown Cairo seem to have received much-needed face lifts, of course this was back in 2015 but we haven't posted all of them. Some of them look absolutely fantastic.

I'm not sure what square this is, perhaps a Cairene can help me pinpoint it but I can see El Alfy St. so I assume it's Oraby Sq. after its renovation. Beautiful cobblestone-paved streets. This is how all of Downtown Cairo should look. El Alfy St. itself was turned pedestrian-only last year and it is also beautiful after the renovations.

And here is El Alfy St. which can be seen from a distance in the picture above after it's pedestrianization.

I heard about that hotel, it doesn't really belong in this tread but I can't believe we don't have a thread for it.

Second phase of renovating downtown buildings starts - LINK

There’s no doubt that the glory of Cairo’s downtown buildings makes the area one of the most mesmerising spots in Egypt. Despite being worn by time, the buildings, which were built in the Khedive Ismail era, were and still are a signifying proof of how architecture resembles a city’s beauty, elegance, and modesty. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of establishing Khedive Cairo, the National Committee for the Protection and Renovation of Cairo’s Heritage decided to start the second phase of restoring downtown buildings.

[...]

In cooperation with the Body of Cultural Reservation, the committee put forward the plan of renovating the building while maintaining its unique cultural architecture, which resembles the era’s civilisation. The committee is to list other heritage buildings that are of high cultural importance for Egypt’s recent history.

[...]

The first phase included renewing 80 buildings in Fatimid Cairo, Al-Muez Street, and Sour El-Azbakeya.

[...]

Looks amazing, is that El Alfy St.? I would love for this area to get plenty of investments in the form of upscale cafes, restaurants, hotels and stores. A pretty facade wont stay pretty forever, once the ahawi and hawkers take over it'll become rundown in a matter of months. Genuine gentrification is the only way to keep it this way. Why not partner with Egyptian chains like TBS, NOLA, Beano's, the Mori Co brands etc. to open proper venues there?
