Gaya Airport to be clubbed with Varanasi Airport and Kushinagar Airport for the next round of privatization, for which bids are likely to be called by early 2022

Days after the government announced its ambitious asset monetisation plan, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Thursday approved the privatisation of 13 more airports by next year— six major ones and seven smaller ones that will be clubbed with the bigger ones. Sources say the clubbing will be like this: Varanasi with Kushinagar and Gaya; Amritsar with Kangra; Bhubaneswar with Tirupati; Raipur with Aurangabad; Indore with Jabalpur and Trichy with Hubli

AAI will now begin the process of preparing bid documents so that the same can happen and process completed by next year. This is the first time that smaller airports are being clubbed with bigger ones while opting for the PPP mode in which on revenue share model a private player develops and expands airports while their ownership remains with the government.

4 expressways will pass through Bihar, the development of these 28 districts will get new speed, know the complete routes

In order to give new impetus to Bihar's development, four expressways are being built in the state. The process of construction of the first expressway between Aurangabad and Jaynagar is going on.

Aurangabad Jaynagar Expressway - This four-lane road starting from Madanpur in Aurangabad will also provide connectivity to GT Road passing beside Gaya Airport. From Gaya, it will pass through the border of Jehanabad and Nalanda and reach the Kachi Dargah in Patna. From here on the 6-lane bridge being built between Bidupur, Chaksikandar will go east of Mahua to Tajpur. From there it will end at Jaynagar passing near Darbhanga Airport. This road from Aurangabad to Jaynagar will be 271 km long. This road will pass through 6 districts of the state including Patna.

This road will have direct connectivity to Gaya and Darbhanga airport of Patna. It will enter Vaishali through the bridge being built between Kachi Dargah Bidupur. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has asked to connect this bridge till Tajpur. In this way its usefulness will increase further. This road will end at Jayanagar after going from Vaishali to Samastipur and Darbhanga on the Nepal border. In this way, this road to become four-lane will pass through Aurangabad, Jehanabad, Vaishali and Madhubani apart from Patna.

passing beside Gaya Airport. From Gaya, it will pass through the border of Jehanabad and Nalanda and reach the Kachi Dargah in Patna.
We all know the state of air connectivity in Patna. The existing airport is already overburdened with a rather short runway which can't even handle fully loaded B737/A320 to medium-range destinations like DXB, SIN and airside has little room for expansion. This short runway problem was clearly visible when during COVID reparation flights (which were destined for Bihar) all of them arrived and departed Gaya instead of state capital Patna due to the longer runway there. The proposal to build a new Civil Enclave at nearby Bihta Air Force Station has been abandoned due to State Govt's. failure to acquire land for the project. The Greenfield option has also not made much progress since. This is where I believe Gaya Airport can play an important role here.

With the completion of this expressway at least the stretch between Gaya and Patna by mid-next year, Gaya Airport would be hardly around 45-50 minute drive from Patna city. Moreover if a HSR Rail is not possible between these 2 cities A Rapid Rail system on the lines of Delhi-Meerut RRTS with a top speed of 180 Km/h would make Gaya Airport easily accessible to Patna's residents. As mentioned above the runway is of adequate length and there is is enough room for expansion with small land acquisition and most importantly it holds the prized "International Airport" Status. All these factors make me believe that Gaya can become the Intl Gateway to Bihar and also act as a second airport to Patna with minimal investment if Bihar Govt. convince airlines and does it's small land acquisition part diligently

Gaya Airport Apron Expansion Update:

Gaya Airport is currently expanding it's apron upon whose completion the apron would be able to handle 4 Airbus A320/ Boeing 737 sized aircrafts up from the existing 3 out of which 2 are contact bays. The expansion also involves construction of a new link taxiway to the extended apron. As you can see through the pictures clicked by arriving passengers the work on which started in October is going on at a brisk speed and is expected to be completed and commissioned in the next 3- 4 months.

Airport Advisory Committee Meeting: Emphasis given on expansion of airport

The Gaya Airport Advisory Committee met on Tuesday. In the meeting chaired by MP Vijay Kumar, emphasis was given on runway expansion of many airports. The length of the Gaya airport runway is to be increased from 7500 feet to 9000 feet and the width from 148 feet to about 200 feet. The matter is pending since 2012 due to non-acquisition of land. During the meeting, discussions were held on expansion of Gaya airport, land acquisition, establishment of cargo terminal, removal of encroachment, construction of drain in the outer premises of the airport, taking NOC from Airport Authority of India before construction of building around the airport.

The matter is pending since 2012 due to non-acquisition of land. The increasing number and facilities of aircraft and passengers were discussed in the meeting. The airport authority was instructed not to allow any shortfall in the convenience of the passengers. It was told in the meeting that world class facilities are available in the new terminal. Apart from this, the introduction of cargo service was discussed in detail. The MP said that the industrial policy of the state government would get a boost with the start of the cargo service. From here, agricultural products will be marketed abroad. Farmers will join the market. Organic crops will be promoted. There will be branding of fruits, flowers and vegetables. Farmers of Bihar will get international recognition. With the construction of Air Cargo Terminal, Gaya and surrounding industries will get a boost.

With talks of Gaya Airport Expansion going on here is the masterplan of the project which incudes the proposed 500m runway extension on RWY 10 end, new Terminal Building to the south of the runway and the CAT-1 ILS approach lighting for RWY 28. With the airport set to be privatised within a few months the new private operator will most probably make changes to the masterplan by adding a full length parallel taxiway compared to this old AAI one which has a partial parallel taxiway.

Masterplan of the project:

'GAY' Code For Gaya Airport Inappropriate; Panel Tells Centre To Change

A Parliamentary panel on Friday said the use of 'GAY' code for Gaya airport is inappropriate for the holy city and asked the government to make all efforts to change the code. The Committee on Public Undertakings, in its first report tabled in Parliament in January 2021, had recommended changing the code of Gaya airport from 'GAY' and also suggested an alternate code name like 'YAG'. According to the civil aviation ministry, IATA has expressed its inability to change the code without a "justifiable reason primarily concerning air safety".
