AAI writes to govt. seeking land for runway expansion

The Airports Authority of India, Puducherry, has submitted a proposal to the territorial administration to acquire around 200 acres of land in Tamil Nadu for expanding the runway by another 500 to 600 metres.

The report was submitted to the Tourism Department three weeks ago, detailing the land required for expanding the runway from the existing 1,502m to 2,000m to operate wide-bodied aircraft.

The runway ends near the border of Tamil Nadu and any expansion would need cooperation from that State. The Airports Authority of India would bear the acquisition cost, a senior government official told The Hindu.

The last expansion of the runway from 1,222 metres to its present size was done in 2007 after the territorial administration handed over 20 hectares of land to AAI.

Sources in the airport and AAI said they were not very optimistic about the proposal to expand the runway by 500 metres to 600 metres because of the huge cost involved in the work taking into account the topography on Tamil Nadu side.

The land belonging to Tamil Nadu towards right side of the airport terminal was a valley and filling the gorge would need a huge investment, said an AAI official.

Demand for more flights:

A section of the employees in the airport wanted the territorial administration to take more steps to bring more smaller aircraft similar to the one operated by SpiceJet in the Puducherry-Hyderabad sector.

The low-cost private player resumed operations to Hyderabad last month by putting one of its 78-seater Bombardier aircraft into service.

AAI officials in the airport and ground staff of the private player stationed here are enthused about the prospects after seeing the patronage the sector received since the first flight took off from the airport on August 16.

“While on weekdays the airline registered 60% passenger load factor, on weekends the load factor is more than 70%.

On several days, the load factor was 100%. For an aircraft operating under UDAN scheme, the present load factor is reasonably sufficient,” an employee of SpiceJet told The Hindu.

After it receives new four Bombardier aircraft in October, the operator would take a call on adding more sectors from here. “Definitely, the Bengaluru sector is our priority for any operational expansion,” the employee added.

AAI sources added that Air Odhisha as per the agreement with Ministry of Civil Aviation has to commence its service in the allotted sector — Chennai-Puducherry-Salem-Bengaluru — before September 30.

“If they are not going to start the service before the stipulated time, the Ministry may enter into agreement with another operator,” the source added.

This tremendous response was anticipated..
and its just a news article..
Seems you have considered 15 days in August, but actually it was 16 days..:)

so technically PNY-HYD registered 85% load facto
the article still holds the credibility..
mentioned 60+, 70+ & 100's average will come around the same 85+

SO
#Picture toh samehi hi..☺

^^ good points. MAA offers far more connections than PNY can ever dream of...

Honestly, Trichy airport is much better suited for pilgrims going to Velankanni rather than PNY. Its a matter of time before some domestic, religious tourism charters start arriving there.

PNY's runway is too short for narrow body jets. Thats a big impediment.

Low visibility, a worry for air operations in Union Territory

PUDUCHERRY Low visibility, a worry for air operations in Union Territory

Patronage increasing but frequent cancellations, rescheduling mar operations

In its re-entry to the Puducherry air map after a gap of around three years, SpiceJet’s least worry is about lack of patrons for its Hyderabad-Puducherry-Hyderabad service. Even as the airliner has seen near-capacity passenger volumes on most days, its concerns are to do with something different — the services to Puducherry have been confronted with a problem of low visibility for landing at the airport here on several days since flight operations resumed in August.

Owing to diminished visibility, the low-cost flight operator was forced to cancel its service on September 1 and on several other days had to delay take off of its 78-seater Bombardier, SEJ 1004, from the Hyderabad Airport due to adverse weather conditions at Puducherry Airport.

As per Visual Flight Rules, the airport here should have a visibility of around 5,000 m for the pilot to land the aircraft without any safety threat. On September 1, the visibility was as low as 1500 m and the scheduled take off from Hyderabad Airport at 10 a.m had to be cancelled, said a source in the airport.

The passengers who had booked tickets from here to Hyderabad were taken by the airline managers to Chennai for providing alternate flights. A few of them got their money refunded and cancelled the trips, said a source in the airport.

On several days, the take off from Hyderabad had to be cancelled due to low visibility, an airline staff told The Hindu.

“We are worried about the operations in the next two months when monsoon sets in. The weather condition will be extreme in the coming days,” the staff said. It will be better to shift to Instrument Landing System (ILS) from VFR, said an airport official.

And the problem, it is feared, could turn worse in the winter months ahead.

The Puducherry Airport had proposed to the Airport Authority of India to set up ILS which would help flight operations during inclement weather. The ILS, according to an airport official, is a ground-based system that provides guidance to an aircraft in approaching and landing on a runway by a combination of radio signals and high intensity lights.

It guides the pilots on a specific glide path approach, helping aircraft descend to lower altitudes before making visual contact with the runway during adverse conditions, the official added.

Good volume

Apart from the glitch in the weather, the private player was extremely satisfied with the traffic volume in the Puducherry-Hyderabad sector.

“On most of the days, we are having 100% capacity. The patronage for the sector is showing increase after people here came to know about the connectivity flight available from Hyderabad to other destinations,” an airline staff said.

HYD TO PNY-Sep, 2017

HYDERABAD PUDUCHERRY 2,070 2,030 4,100

Looks like Puducherry needs an additional daily flight from Hyd and this traffic is from a single daily flight looks like the flight has nearly 100% occupancy most of the days, it's incredible.

Should be declared most successful UDAN route!

Half the seats are sold at 2500. SG does not take VGF from the government. A 100% load is almost guaranteed but the yields are modest..

Virgin route is only a notion. The route is not important. The airport is. SG has effectively connected its massive national network to PNY via HYD. Thats why loads are averaging higher..

Various operators have tried connecting PNY in the past, but there wasn't sufficiently consistent load to support a 70 seater. Primarily because those flights did not leverage the national network, and that PNY itself was not prepared.

Also, there was a limit of how long an airline could afford to offer low fares to stimulate the route as there was no guarantee that the competition would not come and dump capacity once the route matured.

The RCS rules addressed those problems.

Now three years of monopoly means that SG can keep ticket prices low to let the route mature slowly because it is assured better yields in the long run!

How about a flight to B'lore? I did flew once and later it was pulled off, do you think Blr flight has a chance of survival once again? I would surely benefit with one or is that going to be either B'lore or Hyd? specially with Indigo using ATR to connect via B'lore with much larger network out of B'lore.

Is there any rule that two carriers cannot compete in a UDAN route?
What will happen if spicejet adds one more flight in hyderabad-PNY route. will they get the UDAN benefit for the first flight or will it be cancelled?
Two or more carriers compete before the route is awarded. Once the route is awarded, there is monopoly for 3 years.

So apparently there is ambiguity in the rules about the second question you raised. I suspect this is why SG chose to fly BRL-PNY instead of adding a second HYD-PNY. If a large percentage of people flying to PNY are anyway transiting at HYD, it makes sense for SpiceJet to connect PNY to their hub at BLR to further strengthen their network.

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy told a press conference on Sunday that SpiceJet had sought permission to run another flight service to Hyderabad from Puducherry.

“We have received requests from Indigo and Air Odisha as well. Though Air Odisha has not sent a formal request to us directly, we would discuss this with the Union Ministers when we visit Delhi in the coming week,” Mr. Narayanasamy said.

He added that during the south Indian Chief Ministers’ meet held recently, he had requested the Tamil Nadu government to provide them land for the airport. “We have also sent a letter to the Tamil Nadu government, but have not received any reply,” he said.

SpiceJet flight service to Bengaluru from February 15

All set for take-off: SpiceJet is planning to operate a 78-seater Bombardier on Puducherry-Bengaluru sector.

The Puducherry airport is all set to become busier in the months ahead with the budget airliner, SpiceJet, announcing a flight service to Bengaluru from here from February 15 and other private airliners in the fray to launch commercial passenger flights to various southern cities.

The airline, which started service to Hyderabad in August last year under the Centre’s Regional Connectivity Scheme Udan (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagarik), will open the sector to Bengaluru four years after suspending its operations between the two cities. SpiceJet, as the sole operator, launched Puducherry-Bengaluru commercial flights in 2013, and suspended it in 2014.

According to sources, a 78-seater Bombardier, SG 3419, will take off from Bengaluru at 9.40 a.m. and land here at 10.30 a.m., starting commencement of daily flight service to another sector. The return flight, SG 3420, will take off from here at 10.50 a.m. and land in Bengaluru at 12.10 p.m.

Sources in the airline told The Hindu that the schedule had been planned in such a way as to give passengers onward connecting flights from Bengaluru to Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. “This time, we have done the scheduling after a lot of ground work,” said a SpiceJet staff at the Puducherry airport.

More facilities needed

With Air Odhisa getting the approval from the Director-General of Civil Aviation for operating in the Chennai-Puducherry-Salem-Bengaluru sector, the airport is set to witness more services to more destinations. In recent months, there had been enquiries for operating cargo service from Puducherry to other parts, said an AAI official in Puducherry.

With the airport set to witness more service, the AAI staff felt the need to provide additional facilities, including ATM and a medical store. A medical store in an airport was a mandatory requirement, said an employee.

According to a tourism department official, the government was in talks with Tamil Nadu government to provide land for runway expansion. “We have already had several rounds of talks with Tamil Nadu,” said a senior official.

The AAI, Puducherry, had submitted a proposal to acquire around 200 acres of land in Tamil Nadu for expanding the runway by another 500 to 600 metres.

The report was submitted in October last year to the tourism department, detailing the land required for expanding the runway from 1,502m to 2,000m to operate wide-bodied aircraft.
