AAI moots airport runway extension

Proposal to extend length from 2,850 m to 3,500 m

n what could come as a relief to NRIs in the Malabar region, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has proposed to extend the runway length of the Calicut International Airport from 2,850 m to 3,500 m.

The move comes close on the heels of an earlier plan to reduce the runway length to 2,700 m so as to increase the Runway End Safety Area (RESA). The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) wanted the AAI to increase the RESA to 240 m and runway strip to 150 m at the airport.

However, the new proposal would be confined to extending the runway length without disturbing the runway strip at 75 metres on either side, sources told The Hindu on Thursday.

For this purpose, the AAI has proposed to the State government to acquire 96 acres of land. Initially, the requirement for expansion was 485 acres. But this was scaled down to 248 acres, including 80 acres for rehabilitating families who will be evicted for the project.

The problem is addressing only current needs rather long term one...

Infact the very airport's current plights lies to the original foolishness done by Calicut public, when they raised the money from public (a traditional version of modern style crowdfunding) and then gave it to AAI to build an airport....

AAI expected the same in Cochin years later, but thank god, that time we had a sensible CM and a collector who rejected such idiotic ideas at first hand itself, which resulted in India's first PPP airport... Originally that title should have been deserving for CCJ, as it was not using AAI (NAAI that time), the airport was constructed.

Pennywise. Pound foolish. Looks like the people of the region will get exactly what they deserve. A longer runway. And only that.

Apron congestion at CCJ will only drive more traffic to CNN/COK in the long run..
Now there is a different side of story too. Even if AAI manage to acquire 485 acres. Cost of filling it up for runway ,taxiway and construction would be around 3k crores atleast. This airport is built on air!.

AAI sounds like some scam. Too eager to expand and fill CCJ and IXE runways with extremely huge costs.

What 485 acres, mate??

Read the article again.

AAI is now merely bowing to the intense local political pressure and only giving approval for a runway extension, provided the State Government acquires 96 acres. Only the runway strip will be lengthened. No parallel taxiway, no new terminal.

The full fledged PLAN A of AAI was full length parallel taxi way and new huge terminal adjacent to taxiway and runway expansion to 3500m with 485 acres. They got stuck with this plan to pressure for land acquisition.
Last year when this didnt work out they came out with PLAN B with lesser acquisition.
Then PLAN C , PLAN D, PLAN E and now PLAN F.

Last month plan was to reduce runway length and increase resa.
Next month you may hear new PLAN G.

Each plan have different area of acquisition, different runway length. They have no clue on how to realize or what they really want.

People just want thiruambady airport proposal to be made reality. Whenever it hots up, AAI brings new plans. CCJ already lost long back.
Actually Thiruvambady proposal hasn't really got into public discussion as strong as other projects... Normally in Kerala, its newspapers who takes lead in such opinion formulation. We all have seen that since times of formation of CCJ airport project itself.

Mathrubhumi took an exemplary role in promoting the concept of CCJ and its editor Keshavan took a personal lead to get the airport into reality. Mathrubhumi is Kozhikode's own newspaper, but rarely we see any campaign from their end over Thiruvamabady.

The same lackluster approach could be seen other Kozhikode based medias like Madhayam or Media One etc.

Okay, we can understand lack of political will from IUML. But what about leadership within Kozhikode. Both Congress and CPM have a huge stake in Kozhikode district. So as influential business groups or business leaders took any active interest.

These all factors are not keeping Thiruvamabady in center of discussions regularly. This Thiruvambady comes inbetween and suddenly loses its steam..... Someone has to seriously push on it.
