Etihad to have all-economy flights

DUBAI: Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways yesterday said it will introduce an all-economy service in October on short-haul routes to meet demand for lower fares.

It said it will deploy two Airbus A320s on the initial flights to Alexandria, Calicut, Colombo, Damascus, Doha and Thiruvananthapuram.

The all-economy cabin aircraft will operate to short-haul destinations, which have high demand for economy traffic and low for premium one, it said.

Etihad plans to expand the all-economy fleet to 10 A320s to launch new short-haul destinations and meet demand for lower fairs on its existing ones.

RAK Airways to re-launch this year

RAK Airways will re-launch its operations in the September-October period with an aim to break-even on the first year, its chairman said.

The UAE's fifth carrier will start with two planes and will cover South India and Saudi Arabian routes, Sheikh Omar bin Saqr Al Qasimi said.

“What we are looking to serve is the Ras Al Kaimah population where a lot come from Southern India such as Calicut and people travelling to Saudi for Haj. If we could serve them with the right price with the right service, I think people will come,” Sheikh Omar added.

I don't know, how long that service will be in air or not. RAK Airways won't able to succeed without help of Sharjah, as they use their power and position to hijack this service, to ensure there is no immediate competitor for them.

Flydubai is not anywhere near in competition for Air Arabia, but RAK has all potentiality to do so. I remember 2 years back, when it was launched, it offered one way flight from RAK to CCJ just for 250 Dhs (less than 3000 Rs) and with tax, it was just 330 AED (4200 Rs), quite cheap by any standards, forcing Air Arabia to introduce special fares for similar rates

Sharjah has strong support of Abu Dhabi govt and its ruler, hence they can go to any level in stooping this value flight service. I hope, RAK will find a way out in emerging as a winner.

Good Luck RAK Airways

Air India Express from Kerala grounded temporarily.

Air India Express from Kerala grounded temporarily.

A major crew shortage has forced Air India Express to cancel a number of its flights from three airports in Kerala to various destinations in the Middle East from next week.

An Air India spokesperson told that the cancellations would begin from next week of September and would be there till the end of October.

'Around 203 (73 from Kozhikode, 74 from Thiruvananthapuram, 73 from Kozhikode and 56 from Kochi) flights stand cancelled. Some of these flights which originate from Mumbai touch Kochi and then fly to Middle-East. Hence this is taken as two flights and hence the number looks so large,' said the official. We will resume our operations, untill a major overhaul process is complete, to ensure a grievance free travel, says in the press release

The major destinations of the cancelled flights include Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Muscat and Kuwait.

'The travel plans of all those who are booked on the cancelled flights will not be affected because we will accommodate them on other airlines and in case they want a refund, that also would be taken care of,' said the official. Nearly 45,000 passengers stands affected.

E.M. Najeeb, president of the Confederation of Tourism Industry, expressed shock at the manner in which Air India has cancelled flights from the state.

'They should not have booked passengers. Didn't they know of a shortage of cabin crew,' asked Najeeb.

'Now it remains to be seen if this is going to be a gold mine for other airlines operating to the Middle-East. The cancellations have taken place when the tourism season is beginning and there is every likelihood of an increase in airfares during this period,' added Najeeb.

The cancellations will make a major impact as holiday season in Middle East is coming to end by next week of September and heavy rush for passengers returning back to ME starts next week, coupled with Ramadan holidays.

Thanks

I have received information from AI sources that the cancellation is to ensure that the crew do not exceed their flying hours limit.

There was a similar problem in August too but the flights were operated with AI B744s and IC A320s.
A major problem is that, most of the crew has their base station in Mumbai and Delhi for AIE, whereas a bulk of AIE operate from Kerala airports. This means each and every time, the crew has to brought from Mumbai or Delhi to Kochi or TVM or Calicut, from where they have to operate to international destinations like Dubai or Doha etc

Since the Mangalore incident, DGCA and internal unions of AI are very strict about their working hours and shifts, hence by the time they report Kochi or TVM, they find they donot have enough time left to make a trip to Dubai and return. Since AIE has no base in Dubai or Doha or any ME Cities, the crew has to return immediately or wait for next flight in some nearby hotels. As a result their total shift timings exceed and now they are not ready to operate.

And the result is obvious, the tremendous delay and inconsistent operations. AIE has realized this, hence decided that they will have two bases, one in Kochi and another in any ME City suitable.

However no ground facilities are made for making Kochi as a base station, similarly in any ME City. Now they plan to stop the flights, refleet the entire fleet and reorganize the staff and ensure enough crew is available at Kerala.

I think, the concept and idea is good and very much needed. But just like typical sakari attitude, implementation goes wrong, by cancelling the entire operations especially during the heavy rush week.

Thanks

Haj flights from October 21

This year's first Haj flight from Kerala will take off from Karipur on October 21 in the afternoon. The State Haj Committee's Haj camp will open at Karipur on October 20.

Haj Committee Chairman P.T.A. Rahim said here on Friday that two flights would operate daily to carry more than 8,000 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia. The Haj services will continue till November 4. The pilgrims will be flown to Madina. Their return will be from Jeddah.

Mr. Rahim said that unlike last year, larger aircraft would be used to carry the pilgrims. Last year, aeroplanes with a passenger capacity of 230 had caused lots of inconvenience not only to the passengers but the Haj committee and volunteers as well.

The return of the pilgrims would begin from December 1. The last Haj flight was scheduled for December 15, he said. Mr. Rahim expressed hope to get more Haj seats from the Centre. “The Centre has 11,000 seats in reserve. Only 1,441 seats have been distributed from the reserve so far. We are hopeful to get a fairly good number,” he said.

As many as 8,192 pilgrims had been shortlisted for Haj under the banner of the State Haj Committee. Seventy-five pilgrims from Mahe and 285 from Lakshadweep would go to Makkah via Karipur. Besides this, 673 pilgrims from Karnataka would also go for Haj via Karipur, said Mr. Rahim. He said the embarkation point of the pilgrims chosen in the Central quota would be decided later.

As many as 2,531 pilgrims would be from Kozhikode. From Malappuram, there would be 2,055 pilgrims. There will be 33 pilgrims from Pathanamthitta. Mr. Rahim said Kerala was unlikely to get the quota of other States as there was an increase in the number of applicants from those States. “If we get additional seats from the Central reserve, we will give preference to those above 60 years of age and were not selected despite applying the last three years,” he said.

The emigration of the Hajis would be processed at the airport as the pilgrims would be using international passports for Haj unlike previous years. Pilgrims could also carry Zamzam water along with them on their return.

RAK: Rak Airways says it will relaunch its services on October 10, 2010, with flights to Jeddah and Kozhikode (Calicut) after being out of action for over a year.

A spokesman for the airline said at first fares would start at Dh10, and would include an in-flight meal and a 30kg limit on luggage to be checked in.

Omar Jahameh, airline CEO, said Rak Airways was not a budget carrier, but was uniquely positioned below conventional carriers and above low-cost carriers in terms of it services and fares.

The carrier will be flying two Boeing 737-400 aircraft with a one-class configuration and 168 seats, the spokesman said.

Rak Airways stopped its flights to seven destinations spanning from Bangladesh to Lebanon at the end of 2008, but continued charter services with a Boeing 757.

RAK Airways relaunches Jeddah service

Kozhikode: RAK Airways, a national carrier of the UAE, has re-launched its services between Jeddah and Kozhikode.

“The destinations were carefully chosen. Jeddah is the gateway to Saudi Arabia's holiest sites and we expect a steady stream of traffic there, not least for those wishing to perform Umrah or Haj,” RAK Airways CEO Omar Jahamehm said in a press release on Monday.

Flights to Jeddah will be on Sundays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, leaving the RAK international airport at 8 a.m. to reach Jeddah at 10 a.m.

Flights to Kozhikode will be on Sundays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays leaving the RAK airport at 10.15 p.m. to reach Kozhikode at 3.35 a.m.

Mr. Jahamehm said Kozhikode was the natural gateway to the State from where so many of the UAE's expatriate workforce originated. The re-launch of RAK Airways should strengthen ties between Kerala and Ras Al Khaimah, allowing families and individuals alike to travel home more frequently.

“Bookings have been extremely positive with the re-launch of our website - www.rakairways.com in September,” he said.
