As there is no thread here to discuss the developments of other smaller airports in Tamilnadu, I am starting this thread to discuss on Tuticorin(TCR), Salem(SXV) and Vellore airports here..

^^Tuty has 12 Q400 services per week to MAA. So, total seats available is 7956.

As far as I understand from my friends & contacts :

Tuty's daily service is clocking an average of 75% load regularly and it increases to 90% in special occassions.

Newly introduced 5x weekly is doing an average of around 60% regularly and better in special occassions.

So, Tuty must handle a minimum of 4750 passengers per month if we take 60-65% on average.

Good to know that... Actually it is a fine timing for Gulf Passengers; as we know most of the gulf carriers are coming early morning to MAA; for return journey Indigo has its service at 7:30am to DXB from MAA; practically it is very difficult to catch the flight bcoz of the train timing & no flight service to match with that timing as well... for that the best alternate way is trivandrum until Madurai connected well...

True, Smaller state in South India...But still emerging as Aviation hub. Hats off to their politicians and public....

I wish our politician to take steps to develop TCR...Thoothukudi is the one of the fewest cities in India to have both Major Harbour & Airport...And If TCR is developed. It will play huge role in economic development in south TN.

That calculates to 110 passengers/day approx. Is it possible to send this information to appropriate State and Central Ministers to look into this and act on the development quickly. Jameshilton, thanks for getting this info, would you be able to send to Tuticorin Collector, it would enable him to take quick steps in developing the airport.

Recently SG provided bombay and delhi connections to Mysore, Pondichery , Trichy (with aircraft change at BLR/MAA). But i dont find such connectivity for tuticorin flight. If that facility is available, that might fetch few more passengers especially in the bombay-tuticorin route.

Definitely TCR-CJB route has high potential, but the thing is that the journey would be very small, hardly maybe 35 to 40 minutes, though it takes close to 9hrs by rail and road.So most operators would look for some other longer destination via Coimbatore. For eg in that aspect Tuticorin-Coimbatore-Hyderabad may be a good option, and we need some other airline other than Spicejet to gain more attention from Government.....

Paramount Airways plans to restart by May

Wants to initially concentrate on the southern states where it enjoys customer loyalty

With Rs.1,600 crore in its kitty, Madurai-based Paramount Airways is planning to restart operations by May with six ATR-72-600 aircraft, a top official of the now defunct airline told The Hindu.

The erstwhile all-business-class airline operating five Embraer aircraft had its last flight in August 2010 when the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) deregistered its aircraft following a dispute with its aircraft lessors over non-payment of lease rentals following engine malfunction.

Compensation

In November, 2012, the airline was awarded a compensation of Rs.1,600 crore through international arbitration, and, in the same month, the DGCA renewed its operating licence, paving the way for starting afresh.

“The money has now come into our account, and we are finalising plans to restart operations in April. The DGCA has given its go-ahead. There was no liability on the company as the airline was making profit for three years prior to closing down,” the Paramount Airlines official said asking not to be named.

Talks are on to procure the ATR aircraft on lease, and, going forward, the airline may induct Airbus into its fleet. The ATRs with 72 seats are next generation aircraft which are much more comfortable and come with fuel efficiency.

Recruitment

The airline has also started the process to recruit personnel, including pilots, cabin crew, engineers and ground staff.

The airline plans to restart with staff strength of 900 people. The core team that was earlier running the airline is already there, and the rest would be hired in the coming weeks. Several old employees have been called back.

Paramount Airways wants to initially concentrate on the southern states where it had a stronghold and enjoyed customer loyalty. Apart from reopening its earlier bases, Paramount is planning to fly to Mysore, Tuticorin and Puducherry to name a few new destinations.

The official said now Paramount was the most profitable airline in India despite operating no flight for 30 months.

The Rs.1,600 crore that has come in by way of compensation gives the airline much financial muscle power to scale up in coming years.

Contrary to speculations, Paramount was not looking for investment from any foreign airline as there had been no requirement of funds, the official said.

Vagaikulam airport eyes international status

90 per cent of land acquisition work for expansion over

With almost ninety percent of land acquisition, work is moving at a fast pace to upgrade the existing airport at Vagaikulam.

Industrialists in the district are taking all out efforts to invite officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation to find ways and means to upgrade the airport.

With extensive maritime trade, emerging business activities and industrial operations under the logistic support of V.O.C. Port in Tuticorin, the airport should be expanded with infrastructural facilities and modern amenities to get international status, T. Johnson, president of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries and Managing Director, St. John Freight Systems Limited, Tuticorin told The Hindu .

The runway must be lengthened to facilitate handling of international flight services to Sri Lanka, Far East and Middle East countries and domestic services to Bangalore, Cochin, Hyderabad and Mumbai, J. P. Joe Villavarayar, former Chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry and Managing Director of Villavarayar and Sons, Tuticorin, said.

When contacted, Collector Ashish Kumar said almost ninety percent of land acquisition for the expansion was over and he hoped that the process would be completed soon. Administrative sanction was accorded for acquiring 581.36 acres of patta lands and transfer of 4.64 acres of poromboke land in Kumaragiri, Kattalangulam, Mudivaithanendal and Servaikkaranmadam villages in Tuticorin taluk.

For administrative purpose, the entire acquisition area has been divided into 13 blocks and proposals for 11 blocks covering an extent of 507.68 acres was sent to the Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Land Administration, Chennai for publication in the government gazette. For the remaining two blocks, proposals were under process for sending a report to the Commissioner of Land Administration Chennai, at the earliest.

He also added the six land owners had filed writ petitions before the High Court Madurai Bench and got an interim stay for dispossession of their land. But counter affidavit was filed by the District Administration in all the six cases and also by the requisition body- Airport Authority of India. The above cases were under trial. As for transfer of government poromboke lands, proposals were under process, he added.

Nice to see the effort.International Status may not be on cards for next 5 years. We should get direct domestic connectivity to metro cities like Mumbai and Delhi. We also need to push for new Passenger and Cargo terminal. After all these it would be much desirable to get International Airport Status.
