Mobility hub at Kodimatha planned

Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has called for vigilance against those who work towards derailing the development chartered out by the UDF government for the State.

Launching the work on the station office of Kerala State Water Transport Corporation (KSWTC) here on Sunday, Mr. Radhakrishnan said that the district would witness various development initiatives planned by the government.

Though the government was confident of taking the public along with them, handiworks of the ‘anti-development’ lobby could not be ruled out, he said.

The development projects in the pipeline include a modern bus terminal at the present KSRTC stand, construction of modern building for Government Model School, Kottayam, elevation of Primary Health Centres at Panachikkad and Parapuzha to Community Health Centres, and construction of a mobility hub at Kodimatha that would turn it into the transportation nerve centre of the district, he said.

The construction of the Rs.63 lakh station office building of the KSWTC will be completed before the coming Vishu, Mr. Radhakrishnan said.

The authorities have plans to commence operation of an express boat service between Kottayam and Alappuzha, he added.

Land for Kodimatha mobility hub soon

Land for Kodimatha mobility hub soon

Land acquisition for the mobility hub at Kodimatha in Kottayam town will begin soon.

A meeting of the Kodimatha Mobility Hub Society, held here with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in the chair, decided to acquire around 250 acres of land in Nattakom and Panachikkad panchayats. The mobility hub project is being implemented as part of efforts to improve public transport facilities and slowdown traffic snarls in the town area.

Additional facilities

Under the mobility hub project, road, railway and water transport facilities would be linked with additional facilities such as recreation areas and tourist spots.

Approval granted

The society meeting gave in principle approval to the draft project report prepared by Kerala Industrial and Technical and Consultancy Organisation (KITCO) and decided to ask the agency to prepare the detailed project report.

The meeting also authorised district collector Mini Antony, who is also managing director of the society, to hold negotiations with the land owners once the land acquisition notification is issued.

Modern township planned at Kodimatha

It will come up around the 250 acres of the proposed mobility hub
Connectivity:The area at Kodimatha earmarked for the proposed mobility hub in Kottayam.

With the mobility hub taking a definite shape on the drawing board and the State government giving the green signal for the land acquisition for the project, the possibility for a modern township coming up at Kodimatha on the southern outskirts of Kottayam town has gathered momentum.

It was on August 3 that the governing body of the Kottayam Kodimatha Mobility Hub Society with the Chief Minister as the chairman, gave the node for acquisition of 250 acres of land for the purpose.

The project which envisages easy and effective transportation facility bringing together, road, rail, water and air connectivity together, would have an initial investment of roughly Rs.600 crore for its basic infrastructure. According to District Collector Mini Antony, who is the managing director of the Society, the area that has been identified would fall roughly on the western side of the railway line crossing the Kodimatha area and eastern side of MC Road. It would have the Kodoor river to mark the northern boundary.

The rail component of the project has been left to the Southern Railways, she said. They could bring in either a coaching terminal, (which has already been sanctioned for Kottayam in the 2011 Railway Budget) or a halting station. The project has set apart 50 acres of land for rail terminal and related activities.

The road transport system centred at the hub will have terminals for the KSRTC for their inter-district and inter-state services and also administrative offices. The inter-district services of private buses will have their terminals in addition to the terminals for tourists buses which operate regular inter-state services.

The water transport facility will be west of the MC Road and there will be special connectivity for the commuters to the jetty. The proposed mobility hub will also have a helipad and road connectivity to the Kottayam port a few kms away.

Service stations and refueling facilities for the vehicles and dormitories and other accommodation facilities for the passengers will be provided at the township being built around the transportation theme.

A 30-acre multi purpose complex envisaged as part of the hub would become the centre piece of the entertainment and amenities facilities at the township. These facilities include food courts, multiplexes, gymnasiums, malls, and other facilities.

The project, being taken up on a public private partnership mode will have the land owners as its key private players, Ms. Antony said. As per an initial survey, this will bring in nearly 200 stakeholders for the project. One of the key elements that comes in the way of the development of the area is that the area identified for the hub is one of the most ecologically fragile area around Kottayam town as it forms part of the rich paddy fields of the Vembanad wetland region, though paddy cultivation had been discarded for the past many years in the area.

However, the region plays a crucial role in the flood control of not only the town, but also the entire nearby areas. As such an ecological impact assessment would have to be taken up before the work begins, Ms. Antony said.

According to her, the project has envisaged the widening of the various inland canals that crisscross the area to ensure continued flushing out of the water into the Vembanad Lake through the Kodoor River. The SPV has the Chief Minister as its chairman and the Ministers for Home and Finance as the co-chairpersons.

The MP will be the vice-chairman. Members of the governing board include Kottayam Municipal chairman, the district panchayat president, the principal secretaries of Transport and PWD and DRM, Southern Railway.
