Airport ready to facilitate landing in 50 m visibility

LUCKNOW: The Airports Authority of India on Thursday regularised formally the CATIII-B facility for landing of aircraft in low visibility conditions as low as 50 meters at Amausi airport.
Airport director P K Srivastava said the facility was put in place provisionally in October but now it has been regularised. On Thursday morning, an Indigo flight from Delhi landed using the facility when a foggy weather caused visibility to drop significantly. The Lucknow airport earlier had CAT-II which allowed an aircraft to land in low visibility conditions but not below 350 meters.

Jaipur & Lucknow airport upgraded to CAT-IIIB level
In a move that would reduce the pressure on the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here during winters, the AAI has upgraded Jaipur and Lucknow airports to CAT-IIIB level, which would allow them to operate flights in visibility up to 50 meters.
Till now IGIA was the only airport in the country equipped with ILS precision approach CAT-IIIB operations.
The CAT-IIIB operations from these two airports have already began from yesterday, Airports Authority of India (AAI) said in a release.
Earlier Jaipur Airport was equipped with ILS (Instrument landing System), precision approach CAT-I and with this procedures aircraft were able to land in a Runway Visual Range of 550 meters or more. Similarly Lucknow airport was also equipped with ILS precision approach CAT-II and under this procedure aircraft were only able to land with an RVR of 300 meters or more, it said.
Delhi, Mumbai Airport Charges: AAI Eyes Rs 1,500 Cr Revenue Loss

With the implementation of ILS CAT-IIIB operations at the these aerodromes, aircraft will face less delay or cancellation of flight during the winter fog season, the AAI release said.
Moreover, by upgrading, the traffic bound for IGI airport can now be diverted to Jaipur and Lucknow during the peak foggy season which, in turn, will lessen the burden at IGI airport as well, the release said.

Bahrain may enhance direct air connectivity to India

Baharin, which historically served as a gateway between East and West, is planning to enhance air connectivity with India and other Asian countries.

The move follows a decision by Asian carriers to operate more direct flights to Bahrain International Airport (BIA) to help passengers save time and money.

“This year we are focused on developing underserved destinations in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and other select destinations in Asia and Africa,” said Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah, CEO, Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) which owns and operates the BIA.

Air traffic growth

India figures high on the agenda as its represents 20% of Bahrain’s air traffic and this market is set to grow between five and 7% in the near term. Over 350,000 Indian nationals work in Bahrain and they travel mostly through connecting flights from hubs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Bahrain has a large segment of expatriate workers and businesspeople from India, which gives it large potential for high traffic numbers.

“All segment of customers are important to us and with direct flights, they can benefit from shorter travel time and face fewer complications than what may arise with more stops along the way,” Mr. Binfalah said.

To woo airlines BAC is offering a number of advantages including market support and other incentives in parking and landing fees, but it varies on a case-to-case basis.

Air India, Jet Airways

Currently Indian carriers namely Air India, Jet Airways and Air India Express are operating direct flights to Bahrain from Cochin, Calicut, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, Delhi and Chennai. BCA said it is now doing everything possible to accommodate more flights from these stations as well as opening connectivity to other cities.

“Over the next few years, we are planning on catering to the unserved destinations of Bengaluru, which had over 24,000 passengers in 2016, and Lucknow, which had over 14,000 passengers. Bengaluru and Lucknow are our top priority when it comes to expansion, and we are looking forward to help establish routes and offer more flights to those two destinations,” he said.

Air services in Bahrain commenced in the early 1930s and first scheduled commercial flight arrived in Bahrain in October 1932, en-route from London to Delhi.

“The aircraft only carried 24 passengers and had taken several days of flying to reach Bahrain, with frequent refuelling stops and overnight stays in hotels for the passengers. With the commencement of these regular services, Bahrain became established as the Gulf’s first international airport,” Mr. Binfalah said on the importance of Bahrain airport.

Right now, the airport handles more than 38 airlines, including cargo and charter flights, and is connected to 47 international destinations.

BAC is currently investing $ 1.1 billion to upgrade the airport including construction of a new passenger terminal building. With this Airport Modernisation Programme, the airport’s capacity will increase to more than 14 million passengers a year.

AAI to invest Rs 1200 crore for new terminal at Lucknow airport

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has decided to invest Rs 1,200 crore for constructing a new terminal at the international airport in the city. During a meeting with chief minister Aditya Nath Yogi here on Friday, Union civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju, directed the officials to take a final decision within 15 days on making available 70 acres of land to the AAI for the proposed new terminal .
As per the plan in place, the AAI has decided to set up an all new terminal that would be almost four times the size of the existing one. The old terminal used for international flight operations, essentially to the middle east, would be merged with the existing domestic terminal and to form an integrated one on the lines of those at Delhi and Mumbai.
The new terminal is expected to cater to over 6 million passengers and would have three underground subways leading to the Metro station in Amausi.
One passage is proposed to be provided from the existing terminal, while the new building will have two more subways leading to the metro station. The government has also decided to connect the Lucknow airport to the Shaheed Path.
