Its looks like AAI conducted a competition for new CBE airport terminal along with various other airport terminals. Lot of arch companies participated in it and they submitted their design. This is one of the design presented by a company (RMJM archi) and they published in their website.

This design or whatever designed approved may be planned for the big bang expansion (new ternminal) not for current terrminal expansion.

Coimbatore airport, that holds a Customs airport status currently, will soon get an international status with new extended runways, bigger terminal, better ambiance and mechanized ground handling. The process of acquiring 590 acres on the other side of the current runway is in progress and the status is expected in the next two years.

VP Agrawal, chairman of Airport Authority of India told reporters that Coimbatore has a rich potential in the all three verticals — passenger, cargo and international traffic —- and the airport has seen a constant growth of 10 per cent year on year.
Thanks for the details. Hope one day we can see that nice proposal in real

so there is no pickup and drop off area right?
you come out of airport and you land in parking lot... just like udaipur..
both the cities got raw deal from AAI
I know Pick-up and drop service is available in front of the old terminal. I have used to it. Since parking cost is Rs.50-60 , the taxi will drop in front of the terminal and within 2-3 min they have to clear the area or else will be charged. The parking area is very near to the terminal. But I don't know how it is planned near expanded terminal. It looks like old terminal is used for departure and expanded one is used for arrival.

i meant a shaded "porch" right at the gates where you can pickup and drop off people. that helps a lot during rain or hot summer.

Coimbatore: In the customer satisfaction index survey conducted by Development and Research Services, a New Delhi-based agency, the Coimbatore Airport has bagged 84 per cent satisfaction rate as against 77 per cent last year.

Airport Director M.R. Vasudeva told The Hindu that the Ministry of Civil Aviation instituted the customer satisfaction study with set benchmarking for 40 international and domestic airports across the country.

The survey, done once in six months, was conducted in the months of March and April this year taking feedback from airlines, embarking and disembarking passengers, air traffic services regulating agency, visitors to the airport, exporters and importers besides concessionaires.

Based on the feedback, the percentage for various airports had been arrived at and Coimbatore Airport was witnessing an increase in traffic of seven per cent compared to that in the previous year.

Emirates airlines to expand operations in India - Will CBE be one of them?

DUBAI: After bringing to India the double decker Airbus A-380, the world's largest passenger aircraft, Emirates Airlines is looking at expanding its operations in the booming country which is considered by the firm as its second biggest hub after Dubai.

"India is a very big market which has a lot of potential for the next five years. China, India and Brazil are the future market.

"Last year, it was exceptional and everybody suffered. I believe the load from India helped us reduce the effect of the recession. There was double digit growth in India last year and hence India is top of our priority," Majid Al Mualla, Emirates Senior Vice-President (Commercial Operations West Asia and Indian Ocean) told PTI here.

As per the bilateral agreements between the two countries, there are a total of 54,000 seats and the current load factor for the airline hovers at about 83 per cent.

With business "back to normal" after recessions, the USD 11.8 billion Airline is looking at a possible growth of 10-15 per cent in the load factor besides hiring more staff for operations in India.

"By end of 2009, we saw business coming back even though people were talking about three-four years to recover. I think it was earlier than everybody expected. And right now, we are in a stage that we can say that business is back to normal for Emirates," Mualla said.

The airline currently operates 184 weekly flights from 10 destinations in the country and is looking at the possibility of opening new destinations.

As per the bilateral agreement, there are six more additional points that they could operate from including Amristar, Mangalore, Trichy, Goa and Coimbatore.

"We have a long wish-list not just for India but different parts of the world. We are currently operating from 10 destinations in India but if you look at the growth prospect in India, then these 10 destinations are not enough. There is a huge opportunity for all airlines to operate more points in India," the senior Emirates official said.

He said once the airline achieves this year's target, it will add flights to existing network and expand the routes.

The Emirates Group has about 10,400 Indians working for it with about 900 in India. The airline is now looking at hiring more especially for its call centre in India which has a strength of about 500.

"As of now we are having about 900 people working in India but this number will go up. We are hiring more people in our call centre and as soon as we open lounges, we will have more people," he said.

Mualla said the airline is looking at a growth of 15 per cent in passenger load during the current financial year.

"It is not just the traditional load from India to the Middle-East. We have seen a tremendous growth to US, Europe and even to leisure destinations. There is lot of mix of traffic through India and this is good," he said adding, "We are looking at a growth of 15 per cent in traffic during the current financial year from India."

Extent of land to be acquired for airport expansion brought down

The extent of land to be acquired for the expansion of the Coimbatore Airport has been substantially brought down, District Collector P. Umanath said here on Tuesday.

Talking to reporters, Dr. Umanath said that on examining the Airport Authority of India's demand for 848 acres, the State Government found that such a massive expansion was not feasible in many populated areas. The Government, after talks, reduced it by 170 acres and after further scrutiny, brought it down to 613 acres. Four-hundred and twenty-four acres of that alone would be patta land. One-hundred and thirty-six acres belong to Central and State Governments and 52 acres are occupied by the Airport on lease. Of the 424 acres, large portion was unused vacant land and some were farms.

At present the airport is spread over 444 acres with a runway of 9,900 ft. The proposal is to extend it to 12,000 ft for landing and taking off of wide-bodied and fat-bellied aircraft.

Dr. Umanath said that the district administration had convinced the Airport authorities to shift some of the proposed facilities, planned in populated areas, to the uninhabited areas to reduce the impact.

One such relocated facility was the VHF Omni Directional Range (VOMR), originally planned on 100 acres on the thickly populated side.

The final revised plan had excluded nearly 65 acres and nearly 400 houses from acquisition and demolition. What could not be averted was the 950 m of land, eight to ten acres, accommodating 100 buildings, because the airport authority wanted the 950 m for the flight pathway approach threshold.

Under the original plan 814 buildings, including two industrial and two school structures, faced the threat of demolition.

Now 397 buildings, including one industrial building and two school buildings, have been sparred. Only 417 would now be demolished. Classifying the threat to buildings in villages, Collector said 71 buildings in Irugur, 100 in Uppilipalayam, nine in Singanallur and 236 in Kalapatti would be demolished. Originally, the threat was there for more buildings in Irugur and Kalapatti and they had been substantially brought down.

On the compensation for lands acquired and the buildings to be demolished, Dr.Umanath said that sale data was being gathered for the lands in the area in recent times.

Based on that, land value would be fixed reasonably. The value for the buildings would be arrived at based on their age and depreciation. In addition to the final value, an additional 30 per cent would also be given as extra compensation. For carrying out all the formalities, a proposal had been sent to the Government for sanctioning a post of DRO, as done in the case of land acquisition for widening the Chengapalli – Walayar stretch of NH 47.

The process was expected to start shortly and the Airport authorities had planned to complete the airport expansion and modernisation in 24 months from the date of completion of land acquisition. As part of the expansion, the terminal building would come up on the other side of the airport land, just opposite to the existing terminal building. The approach road for the airport would be from Avanashi Road near the bypass road and an additional approach road would be laid from SIHS colony along the existing airport compound.

There should be some area left outside the airport, it should be not like that , that you come out and won't see anything other than parking of the vehicles. I think they are improving in that area and hope that they come up with good result.
