Seems like a sensible use - just up the road from the other recent addition? The same principle has been applied by the council in Sheffield recently; increase the supply of city-centre based student accomodation to try and open up the suburban housing markets to families and young professionals again.

There is an Ipswich Thread, I'm pretty sure it's near the top of this main Projects&Construction page.

Last I heard there are a one or two that have stalled, mid-construction.

They are starting to build the St Anne's Quarter in Norwich. I walked past there the other day and saw them starting on the site, which has remained empty since the old brewery was demolished in 2003.

Take a look at the Orbit Homes St Anne's Wharf PDF

A very 'blocky' urban quarter is taking shape!

And I know I won't be popular in the streets of the East Anglian capital (& the one-time second largest/most important city in the kingdom) for saying this but these blocks could've reduced their 'footprints' and at least doubled in height.

There is a case for a height increase in Norwich, less outward sprawl!

A planning application was submitted in June for new student flats up to 13 storeys on the old Mecca Bingo site. Can't post links yet but more info is on the Alumno website under news.

Very interesting article in the EDP that outlines a few major projects Norwich could be seeing in the next couple of years. I didn't even know some of these plans existed & seem very exiting!

I took a few snaps of the new university towerblock near the bus station the other day. So yet another towerblock is in the pipeline for the city then?

From the Evening News:
I'm not on a good enough PC to check if there is an accessible copy of the Masterplan mentioned, so it's just the article and the solitary picture for now:

We've seen plans for Anglia Square before that haven't come to anything, but worth posting this anyway:

Norwich’s Anglia Square could be demolished as revamp plans, including more than 1,000 new homes, are revealed

Ambitious proposals to revamp Anglia Square, including demolishing the current shopping complex and building more than a thousand homes above new shops and restaurants, can be revealed today.

The owners of the shopping centre have been holding talks with chief officers at City Hall about new plans for a comprehensive redevelopment of the complex.

And they have now submitted a masterplan to the council for what could happen there.

Their “emerging proposals” include:

The demolition of the current Anglia Square, the former stationery office Sovereign House and Gildengate House

More than a thousand homes, to be built above new shop units and a new public square

A new multi-storey car park

The replacement of the existing cinema with a new one at ground level

Better links across the site, to open up entry to the complex from other directions

The developers - Columbia Threadneedle and Weston Homes - acknowledge redeveloping a site of such scale will take a number of years and will need to happen in several phases.

In their masterplan they state: “The provision of an enhanced retail offer will reinforce Anglia Square’s role as a large district centre and ensure it continues to serve the needs of local residents.

This retail role will seek to build upon the existing function of Anglia Square rather than replicating the primary retail functions and fashion-led shopping centres of Castle Mall and intu Chapelfield.”

The north City area is a very visible part of Norwich and needs a lot of attention.

Here's another potential redevelopment in the area, this time at St Mary's Works and St George's Works....check out the 'fly-through' video

I was just thinking as I watched that video, "I don't recognise that building, or those townhouses, or that building?!"

No wonder - half of them don't exist! That's an ambitious project! Thanks for posting. Could be very impressive!

Really hope they sort this area as it's such a blight and really Norwich deserves better. I'd like to see the new development reconnect the surrounding streets and reintegrate the area making it more permeable which would make it more successful.
