ALEXANDRIA | El Nouzha Airport Renovation Project | US$120 million | 2013

General Info

Alexandria International Airport or El Nouzha Airport (Arabic:مطار الإسكندرية الدولي) (IATA: ALY, ICAO: HEAX) is a public airport located in Alexandria, Egypt, 7 km southeast of the city center.

The airport offers services to domestic destinations within Egyptand cities across the Arab world. Alexandria is also served by Borg El Arab Airport.

In 2009, the airport served 1,142,412 passengers (-1.8% vs. 2008).

EgyptAir (and subsidiary EgyptAir Express) is the largest airline at the airport, operating over 50 weekly domestic and regional flights with a mixture of Airbus A320-200s and Embraer E-170s.

Due to the length of the runways, the largest aircraft operating into the airport are the Airbus A320-200 (most common type), Boeing 737-800 and McDonnell Douglas MD-90-30.

El Nouzha Airport has a single passenger building and two runways:

* Runway 04/22: 2,201 x 45 m (7,221 x 148 ft), Surface: Asphalt
* Runway 18/36: 1,801 x 30 m (5,909 x 98 ft), Surface: Asphalt

The airport will be closed to commercial operations by December 2010 for major renovation and all traffic transferred to Borg El Arab Airport

Future Operations

The future of the airport was in doubt with the opening of Borg El Arab Airport, however in early 2010 the Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation announced major plans to overhaul the airport and its facilities to ensure its future as one of the two commercial airports for Alexandria and Nile Delta region.

The renovation project is expected to cost US$120 million which will include lengthening the main runway (04/22) by an additional 750m and the construction of a new passenger terminal to replace the existing ageing facility.

The airport will close down during the fourth quarter of 2010 for two years to implement the expansion project and development.

I dont want, and I dont think El Nouzha will be rennovated.

I dont think Wikipedia is accurate, in all the construction and aviation websites, there has been nothing about this.

Secondly, it will be very confusing, and uneccesary to have 2 Airports in Alexandria. You'll have some airlines here, and some airlines there. Not nice.

Lastly, why spend that money on Nozha, which has a a limited room for developments, when you couldve spent that money on expanding the Borg El Arab site further, where you have as much space as you want.

I hope this project isnt true, and if it is, I hope its cancelled.

It is true.
I asked workers in the airport and they all said that renovation is going to happen.

In my opinion, they should convert this into a military airport because having two small commercial airports in Alexandria is pretty pointless.
